The crack of the dawn, the time where roosters would be signing their song of awaking if one where in the country… But here in the city, there was just the hustle and urgency of movements. The sky had just started to turn from dark to light, the rainbow of colors as the sun rose. It was one of those mornings where the farmer’s market was in town, closing off a small part of one of the parking lots in the strip mall.
The vendor’s just finishing sitting up their stalls with all kind of wares to sell. From homemade foods and goods to farm fresh veggies and harvested meats… The kind of thing a chef could not pass the chance up on. Thus the reason the dark hair male was here this early in the morning. Kody was leaned back against his Venom GT Spyder, the one thing he didn’t buy himself but was given to him. The car was artic white with two stripes going down the middle of the car, thin lines of blue and green. The car seemed to be almost smiling as it sat there on the edge of the parking lot away from everything.
The car was a reminder of something he lost, something he didn’t want to speak about. His blue, almost purple eyes glanced around the tiny crowd that had started to make their way through the market as he took a sip of the tea from the travel cup. After a moment, he sat the cup down on top of his car before pulling out a list from the pocket of his pants, glancing over it before tucking it away. He picked up the duffle bag from his car and swung the strap across his shoulder.
Once he picked up his cup, he headed towards the market. Hoping to pick up what he was looking for not only for his restaurant but also for the class he taught. And maybe find a few things not on his list. Kody started off towards where the meat vendors were. Looking over the smoked goods, taking a moment to talk to one of the vendors about a larger order of meats for his classroom and after agreeing on an arrangement, he paid for some of the smoked sausages. About ten pounds, just enough for the class… after paying for it, he placed the wrapped package into his bag before moving along.
Paying more attention to the goods in the market than when he was walking… There was so much there and he was wanting to get the best for his money. And that soon came back to bite him, when he bumped into someone. Luckily without spilling any of his tea as the cup was closed off. ”I’m so sorry.” He spoke with a tiny bit of a Norwegian accent something left over from his childhood, as he turned to look who or what he bumped into.

The sunlight pierced through the darkened room, a bold announcement that the blackened skies were now cast away by the radiance of the sun. The birds sang their song, a welcoming praise to the joyous sun that had welcomed the arrival of the glory that brought forth warmth. For how would one react upon being graced by a time that one could perhaps say was that of a divine moment? Of course, with the loudest of groans and perhaps even a few swears!
Oh how Walther wished he could just remain in bed, to sleep away his woes, but with his phone’s alarm blaring out and the sun’s ray shining into his room he just knew there was no other option than to get himself out of bed. His movements sluggish, groaning in grogginess as he got out of bed and slunk away to get ready. His morning prep went by, his body dressed and yet that fatigue remained. Walther wasn’t really a morning person admittedly which was why he only woke up unless he things that needed to be done. In this case it was errands for the café he ran.
The café was doing good so far and they weren’t struggling on supplies, but it was always good to be stocked up and with the farmers market in town he knew it was the best time to get some ingredients for the café as he couldn’t pass on getting some quality fresh items. Before long Walther was out the door and heading to his destination. As much as he wanted to stay back home, he knew that all the good stuff would be taken if he lazed around too much.
There was a crowd, but it wasn’t a big one which was a relief to Walther as he could admit he wasn’t quite the fan when it came to crowds. Hands in the pocket of his jacket, Walther glanced over at the stalls and sighed. “This might…take a while…” Walther muttered as he took out some backs and got to work. Some eggs, meat, vegetables and fruit were for the most part the key things he got while walking about. Dine in had grown to be more popular than he thought in the café and though his primary skills were in baking, he made sure the menu was at least good for customers to want to eat there as well.
With a good couple of reusable bags loaded with produce, Walther took a pause for a moment and shut his eyes. “Alright what next do I-” Walther began to mutter quietly to himself in thought, but that was interrupted the moment he felt an impact upon his back. It wasn’t hard enough to knock him down or anything, but the unexpected collision made Walther wobble a bit and drop his back. Luckily the bags held the produce together and he made sure the eggs were secured even from a fall, but there was the matter of the collision to deal with.
“Hm?” Walther let out as Walther glanced over his shoulder with a narrowed eye at the person who crashed into him. There was an instant apology and Walther merely shut his eye and calmly let out a sigh. “Nah, its alright” Walther said before realizing something as he opened his eye and glanced back at the male. “Oh? I didn’t expect to see a familiar face around here” Walther said calmly to the fellow teacher.

[attr="class","really"] [attr="class","exhausted"]You know that ghost is me and I will never be set free [attr="class","rhythm"] ❝ When you reach the part where the heartaches come The hero would be me But heroes often fail |
This was the first time he had been to this market and he was already enjoying it. The culinary teacher had not been back in Canada very long. Maybe a month, month and half at the most. He was settling into his new life and this teaching career. It was strange having the downtime he didn’t have a chef. Back in Japan when he was working out of his own restaurant getting time to slip away for an event was very rare. There were times he slept on the cot he kept in his office because there was some big event that needed him to put more time in than a normal work day.
Getting up early was never a problem for him, it was the falling asleep part that was hard for Kody. Nightmares lurked behind closed eyelids.. Unpleasant dreams tended to sneak in on him. This morning he had been up since three am and was only running on a few hours of sleep. But none of that was on his mind at the moment. He was running through ideas for his class in his mind. Thinking of comparing store products vs their farm fresh counterparts. Dishes that could highlight autumn’s seasonal flavors which were mostly items like those cabbage and squash families, mushrooms, lettuces, apples… basically earthy foods.
The chef slash teacher was really hoping to find a couple good apple varieties, some that were good for eating or needed little prep to those that were good for baking. He had a challenging dish he wanted the students to try just to test their abilities. That is where his mind was when he had bumped into someone. After the initial shock of what he had done passed, purple eyes hidden behind thin black framed glasses laid upon a familiar face… a man with fair hair color and beautiful blue eyes that stood out some brightly against his features.
Kody swallowed nervously but soon started to relax after a few seconds. Social interaction still was one of his weaknesses but it wasn’t something he worked on either. If one were to open a dictionary and look up lone wolf, they would see his photo next to the phrase. His free hand came up to rub at the back of his neck a tiny bit. “Glad you are alright and there was no harm…” It took a second for him to remember where had seen the other face around… He was another teacher but he couldn’t remember what the other male taught in the academy.
Purple eyes glance around the stalls for a moment before turning his attention back. “Yeah… Wanted to hit the place up for my class. Trying to show them the benefits of farm to table, how more flavorful products grown with care and on local farms are over the mass produced produce from stores. But also to highlight seasonal flavors…” His voice suddenly trailed off wondering if the other even cared to hear about all that. Kody had a bad habit of rambling on when it came to his craft.
“Sorry I didn’t mean to go on like that. Hey there is this stall I heard about that sells these breakfast biscuits that are supposed to be amazing from what people were saying. Let me at least buy you one or two to make things up to you.” He was heading that way anyway because the apples were nearby. Kody had seen on the social media page the booth was supposed to have Arkansas Black and Lemon Pippins. Those were new varieties for him and he was excited to try them. The chef could be like a kid in a candy shop when there was new foods to try and explore.

Walther was a man that was usually quite the busy person, always trying to do something to pass the time. It wasn’t that he didn’t have free time, but more so he tried his best so that he didn’t have that much free time. Being a physical education teacher was one thing, but running a café along with other commitments certainly helped when it came to taking up his time, but if he wanted to then he could ease up his schedule quite a bit. The main issue was however that he didn’t want as much free time as it left his mind to wander, and when it wandered there was the chance could turn rather painful.
While it wasn’t that big of a shock to see a familiar face in the market, it still did catch him off guard to see another teacher her. Admittedly he wasn’t the most social so he didn’t really know any of the teachers that well, though he wasn’t that bad that he wouldn’t converse with them if they spoke to him. He didn’t know much about the teacher before him, but he recalled him around the academy before so at the very least he knew that they were coworkers in that regard.
Turning around to face the other male Walther crossed his arms and began to listen to the male go on about why he was here. It surprised Walther a bit as he assumed from first glance that the other male was rather silent, a similar type to himself, but then he started to go on and speak quite a deal. Walther listened to the other male’s words, getting the gist of the other male’s intentions. Considering the male was speaking about gathering ingredients for class it was clear that he was the culinary teacher and from how he described said ingredients it sounded like he knew his stuff as well.
Holding his chin, he couldn’t help but nod as his words taking note, but then they came to a halt as the male apologized for speaking too much. Walther had no problem with it as it certainly lessened any awkwardness and it did lessen how much Walther had to speak as well so he felt that was a double win in his book.
What happened next was the male offering to buy him a breakfast biscuit, a kind gesture but one that wasn’t needed. It was a simple accident and barely an inconvenience so there really was no need for him to make it up. “hmm? Nah there is no need…” Walther began to say but then stopped. He remember that he told himself that he needed to work more of his social skills and this was a good opportunity. For him it was a lot different when comparing work and casual social moments. He needed practice and this guy seemed like a pretty social guy so it might work out. “On second though, I didn’t have breakfast so sure why not. So long as its not out of your way then why not” Walther said with a shrug.

[attr="class","really"] [attr="class","exhausted"]You know that ghost is me and I will never be set free [attr="class","rhythm"] ❝ When you reach the part where the heartaches come The hero would be me But heroes often fail | When it came to daily life something like this was thought of as downtime for him. Aside from teaching a few classes at the academy Kody was a bit of a celebrity chef who made appearances on shows or gave input on tv shows who have a strong food presence. His current project when he was teaching was the second follow up to his first book. Mostly it was research at the moment and trying to recreate dishes. He had a stack of cookbooks from the 1800s that he was studying long lost recipes and recreating them to work in the modern world and modern taste pallet.
Kody was more than content to avoid the social scene and completely content to be a hermit when life allowed him to be. Staying at home in a pair of pajama pants, no shoes… pure comfort doing whatever he could to keep himself busy. With his informative years being affected by the events he had gone through for almost a decade that had left a huge mark on the way he was socially.
He had only been at the school for a month or so which left him a bit out of the loop with fellow teachers, not that he had gone out of his way to make friends or to get to know the other teachers. Kody was happy to just show up at the academy and teach his class before going home for the day. Cooking to him was an escape, a way to drown out the darkness that tends to hover over him… cloud his mind. Cooking had allowed him to gain a new found freedom, and gave him a new life. But it just wasn’t working with food that he enjoyed, it was the science behind it, the history of recipes.
Even as he spoke, he watched the other’s movements and reactions. It was a secondary nature type of thing for him. Something he learned and used to live through the nightmare he had gone through. It may seem like he was relaxed, the chatty type but it was just all a protective reaction for him that kicked in without him even noticing anymore.
Because of everything he had gone through, it taught him to help out others when he could. To be kind and understanding because things might be different than what is on the surface. He wasn’t expecting the other to take him up on the offer because they barely knew each other. Also much like himself, the other teacher didn’t seem much of the social type.
Kody was about to turn around when his offer was declined, either way it didn’t matter that much to him but he had to pause before he got too far in his motion. The words spoken caused him to look back at his current companion wondering if he was really sure about this but he didn’t question it. “I still have a few things to gather and look at. Hoping to find some nice apples and squash, maybe some sweet potatoes. But my stomach is starting to have a mind of its own around all this food.”
He paused for a moment and took a quick glance around. Then he made a slow motion with his arm. “The stall I heard about is down this way. I guess they raise their own livestock and make all the ingredients in house. Some upstart farm that is looking to bring awareness to farming and its community.” Kody moved towards the direction he pointed, weaving his way through a few people to reach the stall.
The name of the farm was Diddly Squat. There was local honey products, baking mixes, fresh produce and an in house made hard cider. On the second side of their booth was the makeshift kitchen with a flat top and steamers. A couple of college looking students making up orders and sending them out on their way. Kody waited for the person in front of him to finish up their order. “Could I get four of the bacon sausage sandwiches, two with egg and two without egg. Extra swiss cheese sauce. Two orange banana slushies and two sides of shredded hash-browns.” He figured that should be enough food for the two of them. He wasn’t sure Walther was a fan of eggs so that is why he go two different versions of the sandwich they were offering.
After paying and getting their order on a typical plastic tray, he carefully made his way over to the seating. He found a table away from the crowd figuring it would be more comfortable for the two of them. After sitting down, he looked towards Walther and motioned to the food. "Help yourself and don't worry about anything. Eat as much as you would like." Kody grabbed one of the drinks and took a sip. The bananas helped to give the orange juice a wonderfully smooth and mellow flavor but also mouth feel.
