Being happy? In this economy? No one has time for that.

I'm lost in the worlds shadow, and someday I hope a light will come to me, to guide me to freedom. Honestly, at this point June wasn't sure why she even tried anymore. Her parents have made things painfully clear, that she's nothing to them. No matter what she did, or how hard she tried, June was never going to be good enough in the eyes of her mother, much less her father. Hell, this time they didn't even humor her attempts to try and connect with them by rejecting their invitation to her piano competition.
In fact, when she called them, to see if they had gotten the request, the dial tone fell flat, as the automated voice rang in her ears. The call you are attempting to make cannot be completed at this time. Please hang up and try again later. Blocked. Not surprising, and so she would just do like she always did in these situations.
She would steel her heart, and put on the mask of the untouchable, prim and proper ice queen that the school knew her as. That still didn't stop her from hurling her phone at a nearby wall as if the device had offended her when she was alone. Her grip tightening on the newest meaningless trophy she'd acquired that day.
Wandering the grounds at night, just shy of curfew was a dangerous move, but it also left her to her own thoughts, the award she obtained earlier in the day felt both like it was burning her hand, and cold to the touch as though it were made of ice. Like an iron anchor dragging her further and further into the depths, she was drowning, and no one was the wiser.
Wiping the tears that threatened to prick the corners of her eyes, June continued her silent trek, her gaze sweeping over the nearly empty courtyard, as she let her face fall into a familiar displeased scowl, the same look her father gave her whenever she vied for his attention as a child. After all, crying is for girls and boys who deserve their parents love. And she obviously didn't, and never would. Mother and father made that very clear.
Worthless. Each step that she took, as she made her way to the top of the small hill to overlook the campus grounds, fell heavier and heavier.
Pathetic. She could feel her mask cracking, the shattering of her heart too painful. Her emotions whipping into a storm that would no longer be contained.
Disgraceful. The tears wouldn't be stopped now. June could feel them pouring down her cheeks as she looked down at the fragile glass trophy in her hand with a bitter scowl. After all, Roses don't cry, not over such trivial things.
Unloved, and Unwanted. Letting out a scream of hurt, and frustration. In this moment of solitude, she could be free. Be free to be herself. Free to be an actual human being, not some doll, like her parents wanted.
This loneliness was what she deserved. She wasn't sure when she did it, but she watched as her award went sailing off into the dusk. June could hear the crack and shatter of the glass as it disappeared from her sight, and she flinched, knowing that she would have to sneak back here early the next morning to retrieve all of the pieces that she could.
And with a very unlady-like huff June threw herself down onto her back, her arms under her head as she stared up into the night sky. The coolness in the air, signalling the start of Autumn washing over her, granting her peace. Even if only for a mere moment before hearing footsteps pattering up the hill. Snapping up to a sitting position, June glanced behind herself, her eyes rimmed red from her crying as her face fell, into its usual mask of indifference as she could make out someone quietly muttering to themselves as they approached.

◣◆◢ | "Howdy there," called out a cheerful voice with an even brighter smile accompanying it as the figure of the troublesome student council president, King Grayson, emerged, stupid hair and all. The cheer he was oozing was enough to cause emotional whiplash to anyone in the know of the poor girl's emotional state.
He had been looking over from a distance for a while, seeing her absentmindedly walk through the grounds. If this was the case of a student just wandering around campus out of boredom or something, then it was a coin toss whether he'd go bug them with his nonsense or not. But, once he'd seen something get thrown into the maw of the night and heard it shatter was it clear that it was time for meddling.
And so he arrived at the top, with a cool soda in hand -Cherry Coke, one originally meant for him- as he walked over to June, towering over her even more than he would if she were to be standing. Despite his position, King wasn't in the know about every student within the school, but he could tell she was most likely a sophomore, maybe a junior, which meant that the she was pushing her luck with the curfew.
It'd be for her own good to avoid any trouble in messing with the curfew -not that King had any room to talk- but if it came down to it, he could try and smooth things over with a white lie or two.
"You've got good taste for a spot. Mind sharing it with me for a bit?" He asked casually, not letting it show that he was making mental notes. He was quite sure he'd seen her around the music class a couple of times with the sophomores. Something about flowers? Vague recollections of her aside, this close he could also see quite plainly the aftermath of tears around her eyes. The smile on his face didn't change a bit, but King was all the more determined to meddle now.
"Would a little payment convince you?" He shook the unopened can of soda in his hand, liquid sugar sloshing inside the tin.

I'm lost in the worlds shadow, and someday I hope a light will come to me, to guide me to freedom. As the footsteps continued to approach, June couldn't help but feel some sort of trepidation at just who, might crest the top of the hill any moment. But she really hoped it wasn't a teacher. She really didn't want to try and explain her blatant disregard for the rules of the academy, or to deal with the guaranteed black mark on her otherwise pristine record. Which would no doubt make its way back to her father somehow.
Lady luck clearly had it out for June. As while it wasn't a teacher much to her relief, it was someone just as likely to get her in trouble if she didn't play her cards right. And her nose scrunched up in distaste as she recognised the voice of the one intruding on her solitude. The peak of his insufferably stupid hair marking him like some sort of bizarre humanoid unicorn among the other students.
She'd seen him, of course, during her music classes. In her eyes, he'd always come off as so infuriatingly artificial in his attempts to be friendly with those around him. Chatting the ear off of anyone that would listen. The council president, and routine meddler in the affairs of others.
There was no doubt in her mind, that he was here to reprimand her for being out this late, or for throwing away garbage on campus grounds, instead of in the trash like it belonged. "Ugh. What do you want Grayson?" She could see that he was staring at her face, undoubtedly noticing her tear streaked face, and puffy red eyes. And so she scowled.
"If you're here to scold me, just get it over with." Lifting her arm up to rub at her eyes, to erase any remaining proof of her shameful outburst. June knew she really shouldn't be letting her mouth get ahead off her like this, despite knowing that as a senior, she should really be showing him more respect, and doubly so because of his position as the president of the student council.
Before regarding him with a curious glance and shrugging her shoulders slightly. Her mask, perfectly set upon her face again as Grayson greeted her with a casual tone, asking if he could join her, and immediately attempting to bribe her to say yes. Fine, she'd play whatever game he was clearly at. "Do what you want. Just keep that saccharine liquid away from me. Amber eyes darting to the can in his hand her face scrunched in distaste as she shook her head, waiting for the older boy to sit down with her.

◣◆◢ | Scold her? I mean, sure, he was the student council president but surely he hadn't been giving an impression of being some sort of uptight rule hound, has he? Did this mean that King would have to start upping his game to alter his reputation back on the right course? Questions for later.
"Of course not. I have better things to do than throw the book at people, let alone a teary-eyed girl," he snickered, not the least bit fazed by the clear displeasure in June's reddened eyes and the venom in her voice. It was a reception he was far too used to dealing with to ever be bothered by.
He chuckled at seeing June put on the mask, reminded a bit of how he would put on a performance himself. Though his were more of the fun kind. This one was just kind... well, it was funny in its own right (really, why put on the face if you've already been seen without it?), but it was also kind of sad.
The rejection of the offer was met with a shrug from him and sat down next to his junior. "Later then, gotcha," he mumbled to himself, stuffing the can into his pocket for the potential chance to offer it again or maybe some other lost soul in need of teeth rotting juice.
As he pulled his hand back out from the pocket of his jacket, the can had been replaced with a fancy embroidered handkerchief. "I'll bug you in just a bit, just take this first. Got a call to make." A friendly offer. One he gave her enough time to choose whether to accept or not while his other hand pulled out a phone.
Whether she'd accept it or not didn't matter, as he was already in the middle of a call. His friend was the fastest hand in this side of Canada when it came to picking up, and King couldn't help but smile, hearing a grumpy 'what do you want?' from the other side. It was a student, a girl, a friend of his and someone he had a bad habit of asking favors from.
"Heyyyy, it's me, it's me." "..." "No, it's not a scam call. You should recognize your liege's voice, dammit!" "..." "Yeah, yeah, beauty sleep. That's great and all, but can you do me a favor?" "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Yelling pierced the phone with enough volume to even reach June's ears, helping her learn a new swear or two. King grit his teeth, feeling his ears ring before once more speaking. "Last time this month, I swear! Just go tell the girls' housemaster that one student's helping me out with some urgent student council business. Super urgent, I messed up and she decided to help. A sophomore, the cute blondie in music." "..." "No, the other one." "..." "The other-other one." "..." There was a pause as King's eyes turned to glance at June, his lips curling into a smirk. "Yeah, her. Daggers for eyes, adorable furrow in her brow." "..." "Great! Thanks, I owe you ten after this one."
"And done. Sorry about that. You should have about an hour now to make it back to the dorm without any marks for it, but you will most likely get nagged at together with me but que sera, sera," the young man sighed, finally putting his phone away after rudely not only intruding on June's time alone but even hauling his ass next to her. And for what?
"So, what's up?"
To shoot the shit, that's what!

I'm lost in the worlds shadow, and someday I hope a light will come to me, to guide me to freedom. When he said he wasn't there to scold her for skirting the time around curfew, June's eyes narrowed at him. If he wasn't there for that, then why was he bothering her in the first place? She had meant to ask, as he dropped himself beside her, but when he all but shoved his handkerchief into her hands and then started making a phone call, and very clearly lying to whoever he spoke to, she gave him a critical look. No one was ever kind without wanting something in return, and she had no doubt that he was any different than the rest of the extras the school was filled with.
Her face was unamused, when Grayson began to tell whoever was on the other line that she was "the cute blondie from music class." And she grumbled about having a name, while huffing, and glancing back towards where she threw her award. It was still light enough that she could probably manage to retrieve most of the pieces before long. But, also, while she hadn't directly invited him to join her, she did however indirectly tell him he could. And ignoring company was impolite. It was only when he started talking about her looks, that her eyes narrowed at him, and she began to second guess whether to stay or not.
So that was why he was here then. He found a girl all alone, and was only interested in making a pass at her. Of course... Why else would he feign interest and then immediately make a power move by throwing around his authority as the Student Council President for someone he didn't know? Pulling her knees tight to her chest, June made sure that nothing under her skirt could be seen, and began watching the older boy with a guarded look as he smirked at her with his now incredibly punchable face.
The moment his call ended, and his attention had pivoted back to her, June scoffed, at being told that he had net her an extra hour to make it back before she would be scolded and marked for delinquency for missing curfew. And her voice took on more venom than she would have honestly liked. Regarding Grayson with the practised sneer of her father. "Just what is your game here Grayson? Calling the dorms and lying like that for someone you don't even know? I swear, if you think I'm one of those sponsored cheap skirts that you boys always flaunt your money and power for, I am entirely disinterested." Her face scrunching slightly as she winced at the distaste in her tone, and at just how nasty she sounded.

◣◆◢ | The nosy human unicorn's face didn't become any less punchable as June put her guard up around him, going off on entirely false assumptions about his intentions here. It was quite funny, really. His smirk only got wider and the punchability rating of his very being increased at a similar rate.
He chuckled. "That so?" No attempts to correct her were even considered here. It was clear that she wouldn't be inclined to believe him no matter what he said and it was honestly kind of funnier this way. Let her think what she wants. Although, considering his track record maybe it wasn't the most unreasonable of assumptions to make. "I'm just here to chat a bit, now that my plans have been thwarted."
Though even with the entertainment of her bark King couldn't help but take note of how her words, the venom they were laced in, seemed to sting her more than they ever could affect him.
A lot to unpack there.
"So, what kind of girl are you, going around throwing glass-," he paused for a bit while pointing down the hill at the direction of the shattered remains of whatever June had thrown, stopping himself from assuming it was a bottle. Its form was hard to see in the night, but he was quite sure it was something different. "-objects around the school campus? This some kind of personal stress-relieving method? Honestly, not very environmentally considerate and the poor janitor has to deal with that in the morning."
Seeing the shards off in the distance give the occasional glimmer under the lights of the school grounds, King made a mental footnote to clean that stuff up. To save Eduard Winkler some trouble.

I'm lost in the worlds shadow, and someday I hope a light will come to me, to guide me to freedom. God, that stupid smirk on his face made her want to punch him even more, as it grew at her accusations. Resting her chin on her knees beside him, her grip tightened on the cloth of the handkerchief he had given her, and she rolled her eyes. Just to chat? Yeah, right.
Like she's gonna believe him on that. Especially with the way his smirk seemed to keep growing. "That right? And why should I believe you after you pulled a stunt like you just did to keep me from getting in trouble with the housemaster?" She really was curious now. There had to be some ulterior motive at play here. No one was that nice. Not to her.
"I- You... S-Shut up." She huffed, tilting her head away from him, her face rapidly turning red in embarrassment as he called her out on throwing her award away. A smattering of sparkling glass shards twinkling in the dim light, almost mocking her. "Its... Its stupid okay?" June's shoulders began sagging, as her eyes darted away from the tilt of the land where the remains of her award lay, and she flopped unceremoniously onto her back.
Her hands behind her head, as she took in the night sky above them. "I'll come by in the morning and clean it all up before class, I promise." She let out a tired sigh, a frown appearing on her face, and rapidly deepening. "And... I'm sorry by the way." If he really was just here to talk, it was only fair that she apologize for basically accusing him of abusing his power to get girls alone. BUT if she was right? Well, it wouldn't be the first time she'd gotten in trouble for beating the tar out of another student.

◣◆◢ | It wasn't difficult for someone like King to pick up on June being so on guard around him, but the more she went on about with such suspicion of his intentions, the more he began to feel like it was a whole lot more than just suspecting he was some kind of dude bro out to try and score himself a date by flexing his position. "Because I'm a decent guy and would do this to anyone?" There was visible confusion in King's expression as he looked at June, stating what seemed only obvious to him and sought out some kind of confirmation that surely she could understand this. Was it that hard for her to imagine just wanting to help out someone a bit, especially when they seem to be down in the dumps?
He chuckled at her embarrassment, but did restrain the plain amusement showing in his face after hearing her say whatever got her feeling like she did was 'stupid.' She finally seemed to relax just a tiny bit, letting herself flop down on her back like that. "Can't be that stupid if it's got you down, y'know. Could be the silliest thing in the world, but it can still matter a lot." Admittedly, King was still inexperienced when it came to life and knew more than a couple of far wiser people even on the school grounds. BUT, he had seen enough and befriended many people to know well enough that the differences in their experiences and woes were as varied as they could come and go, but they were still meaningful. For better or worse.
June seemed like someone who needed to learn that, instead of dismissing them as dumb. Though, admittedly, King was more used to having to deal with trying to help other kids expand that consideration outwards rather than inwards.
There was a brief pause, a silence, once the apology of the blondie reached the young man's ears. He looked at her with a bit of surprise, not having expected to just get it out of nowhere like that. Guess something was going on there internally to allow progress to be made without much from him. That's good. Great even. The senior smiled to his junior. "No need to apologize. I guess I've gotten something of a reputation, so really, that's on me." He did ask girls out maybe a bit too often to say the suspicion was unfounded. And he did always do it very casually too, but that was his MO when it came to everything.
"Now up and at them!" He exclaimed cheerfully, standing back up to tower over June with a grin on his face. He looked down at her lying form. "Let's go clean up whatever it is you threw. The best way to not get something done is to say you'll do it tomorrow, and with two of us it'll be faster." He didn't even give time for the girl to respond, whether it was to disagree or agree, as he had gone off already. He ran down the hill, dangerously close to tripping himself over the barely lit area.
Now at the base of the hill, his tall figure could be seen waving at June, that stupid antennae(?) his hair formed bobbing side-to-side in sync with each energetic swing of his arm.

I'm lost in the worlds shadow, and someday I hope a light will come to me, to guide me to freedom. She didn't get it. No one ever did anything "just to be nice." Not for her. Never for her. The ones that offered kindness always wanted something in return. Her head tilted slightly with her gaze focused on his face. As the older boy continued his attempt to affirm that all he wanted to do was talk, and that he'd have done the same for anyone in her shoes, she started to reassess her previous assumptions about him.
But when he chuckled at her embarrassment, her reassessment was tossed back out the window. He definitely was just an insufferable ass, wasn't he? "It is stupid though..." She grumbled softly to herself, her gaze returning to the night sky as she scowled, at nothing, and yet at everything at the same time. Yet, as Grayson tried to assure her that her that it wasn't stupid, actually did matter, June shook her head. Closing her eyes for a brief moment, blinking back more tears that struggled to prick at the corners of her eyes.
"Christ, I should have known that they wouldn't bother to show up. But when they didn't send my invitation back? Or outright reject it this time?" June said, her scowl quickly dropping, as her eyes reopened and her voice slowly grew quieter, with only her tone betraying the stony look she adopted to try and quash any chances of showing just how upset she truly was.
"I honestly don't know why I even bothered to get my hopes up, or think that this time would be any different." She sighed, heavily, her gaze growing pensive, as she continued to keep herself distracted from the probably concerned look on the older boy's face. Right now, the last thing she wanted was pity.
"After all, they've made it quite clear they don't want me." This last part, she whispered quietly to herself. Choosing to focus on the blinking light of a satellite that drifted over head, thousands of miles away from them as it circled the earth, unaware that her mask had slipped, and her face was awash with hurt.
Shaking her head again, almost imperceptibly when Grayson sounded genuinely surprised she would willingly bite the bullet, and actually apologize for her earlier comment about him being a skirt chaser. June sighed, sitting back up, and looking to him. Her eyes filled with a tinge of regret. "No. Reputation or not, it was... Unfair, of me to assume you were a lecherous pervert. And for that, I insist on apologizing."
She knew first hand how damaging a reputation could to an individual, and it wasn't right play at being better than others, when she was so free with her assumptions. After all, he could have just ignored her, and chosen not to approach when he realized who she was right?
And when the older boy jumped to his feet and motioned for her to follow him, saying that they should just try to clean up now, instead of tomorrow, she gave him a bewildered look.
Why would he want to help her? She'd been nothing but dismissive and rude since their first genuine interaction in the time she'd been at the academy. June didn't even have a chance to open her mouth in protest, after all, this was her mess, she should be the one to fix it, not him.
In the span of a single blink of surprise, Grayson was already bounding down the poorly lit hill, risking injury because of her own petty feelings. And that just wouldn't do.
Getting to her feet, June smoothed out her skirt, and started to follow him down the awkwardly lopsided hill, to try and find all they could, before it became too dark for the pair to actually gather anything.
Catching the glint of something in the grass nearby, June winced, when she saw the shard that said 'place', nearby. It wouldn't take a rocket scientist to be able to put two and two together, especially, when they saw the 1st or either her first or last name, on any of the other shards. If they were even as intact as this one that is.
Gods, she could only hope that those were too damaged to be clear as to what it was that she threw exactly. But if they were? And it did show just what the award was for? Well, here's hoping that he doesn't suggest they do something stupid like try and glue the damn thing back together.

◣◆◢ | Cue the drum roll, please.
By the time June had reached the bottom of the hill, her senior was crouching front of a spot, phone in hand as it cast a spotlight from its flashlight upon a large chunk of glass. "We could glue this thing back together," he said with an earnest laugh, thinking this to be a good thing as he figured from the clear 'first' on the shard that it was some kind of trophy or reward. And there came the canned laughter. Truly, as people seemed to do far too often around the busybody council president, June Rose dared to hope that Murphy's Law -which really, within academy grounds should simply be called Grayson's Law- was not applicable to her.
A few shuffles of his arms slid them out of his sleeves, as King tossed his uniform jacket onto the ground without any regard of its wellbeing. To further disrespect his uniform, he carefully nabbed the chunk of glass from the ground and placed it on the fabric. "This'll do as a makeshift pouch. Stuffing shards of glass into pockets is just asking for trouble and no need to waste precious time on getting a bucket or something. I've got a spare anyways, so get to collecting," he commanded firmly, wanting to make sure there would be no backtalk about the jacket. To make this especially clear, even as he was speaking, he continued to collect any and all nearby shards on his jacket.

I'm lost in the worlds shadow, and someday I hope a light will come to me, to guide me to freedom. When she finally managed to join him at the bottom of the hill, Grayson already had his phone out, and its flashlight on, pointing at a large chunk of the award that hadn't broken, clearly giving away just what it was. And June winced when he suggested they glue it back together."Can we not?" She really didn't want the reminder that once again, her parents found no interest in her life, and that they clearly wanted nothing to do with her.
Glaring at the chunk of glass, almost willing it to break apart and become irreparable she turned her gaze to her companion, an almost pleading tone to her voice now. "Can we please just throw it away instead?" Begging wasn't something she was fond of doing, but with the way the older boy was working and talking, he wasn't really giving her a choice, in the restoration of the accursed object.
Which felt even more like an inevitability when he shrugged off his uniform jacket, much to her surprise. "But..." It was clear he wasn't going to accept any arguments over what was going to happen, as Grayson started tossing the fragments onto his jacket. Which she had absolutely no doubt would be cut up and damaged by the sharper pieces. Grimacing at how hard he was working June, while reluctant, started assisting in the search.
Pulling out her own phone, and trying to ignore the spiderwebbing cracks running along the screen from when she threw the device earlier, turned her own flashlight on, she started checking over the grass near the two of them, while thinking of some way she could manage to repay the older boy.

◣◆◢ | June had her baggage to deal with, that much was clear from her mutters about an ambiguous 'them.' Some guesses could be made based on her attitude and words, but King actively chose to ignore all of that. It was better going in without assumptions and mere conjecture from his experience.
"Well, it is yours to do what you want. You won whatever award this is, after all," he replied to her pleading with a smile, picking up shards on the side whenever they'd glimmer under the spotlight. "Just seems like a darn shame to me. Whatever you did, you had to work to win an award for it, right? Wouldn't throwing it away be a disservice to your efforts and time?" A particularly large chunk of the award caught his eye, noticing the etching of a quarter note. Huh, so she was musically inclined? Not that shocking considering her elective, but she was good enough to win awards, huh. "And really, what about all those kids who lost to you? Imagine them hearing that you decided to just smash the thing to pieces. Pretty disrespectful to the spirit of competition and their efforts, I say."
But that was enough earnest appeals to take into consideration. The prez needed to balance things out with some levity, as he didn't want such an uptight girl to snap from all that stress.
He glanced past his shoulder to where June was searching shards for, giving her a more teasing smirk. "I don't mind if you throw it away though. I can grab the thing and tell girls in music class I won it. I play the piano decently so I can bluff some dates," he suggested with a chuckle, motioning with his fingers nimbly to play an imaginary piano. The notes 'played' were those of an opening for a tokusatsu show he'd been learning recently. "I get a chance to pick up girls, you get rid of the trophy, and it's even recycling! It's win-win all around."

What she wanted, was to just take the pieces they'd found so far, and to throw them where no one would ever find them. But that clearly wasn't an option. So throwing them in the trash was her next best choice.
And she sighed softly when he continued to needle her about the stupid award. No one else seemed to care about all the work she put into winning the damn thing, or the time and effort needed to even be remotely good enough to compete. So why should she care?
June's scowl returned to her face when he held up the shard with the quarter note etched into it, and she had to stop herself from snatching it out of his hand, and throwing it off into the night.
Honestly, she hated the fact that he was right. That it wasn't fair, to the others she competed against for her to just...
Throw it away.
Or to just smash the thing, and ignore it ever existed.
As King kept talking, she could feel the bitter hateful bubble over his attempts to get her to change her mind welling up in her chest when she turned away from him and muttered a frustrated "Yeah, right. What do you know?" to herself, as she picked up a slightly larger piece of the broken glass.
And while his words did genuinely weigh heavily on her mind, as they continued their efforts to find all the pieces they could, before it was both, too dark, and they ran out of the time he bought for them with his excuse earlier.
June honestly just couldn't stomach keeping her award. She was far too bitter about it, and there was no way she wouldn't remember the anger and hurt she felt today whenever she looked at it.
Tossing the larger piece she'd found moments earlier onto his coat she spit out an irritated, "Do what you want. I'd be happy to never see the damn thing again." As he mentioned that if she truly didn't want it, he'd gladly take it, and pretend he had won it himself.

A give and give sounds a lot nicer, me thinks.

◣◆◢ | King stopped picking up shards for a moment, as he look at Rose. Her response was no fun, which granted, wasn't what he had sought and he decided to keep the trophy around for real. Not as a joke or a pickup trick. Silly thoughts of gluing the thing back together and holding onto it till he'd find the perfect opportunity to push it back on June went around in his head, a meddling scheme of a kind cementing itself.
But right now, he needed to begin closing off the distance a bit.
"I know nothing about your circumstances," he admitted with a smile. Hell, he didn't even know her name right now, which in of itself was kind of funny. He continued to speak, as earnestly as he could, "But if that's the problem here, you could always tell me. How about it?" It was a genuine offer to listen to anything and everything June would want to share. King had listened to his share of venting before and one more session would be nothing for him. Though if we're being honest with his track record of pestering people, not a lot were willing to do so on the 'first session.'
