She never joined clubs back home. [break][break]
Even if she did, no one was willing to be her partner. They would also sneer or snicker, or the pranks got a bit too cruel. It's why, though she has a love for skating, she always did it in private, or with the tutor mother or father hired. It was one of the sports that they approved, with mother saying it was elegant enough for her image, and father saying it was good exercise regardless. Aoife, herself, just enjoyed gliding on the ice for all that it was. To a degree, it was therapeutic. To a degree, it was soothing. [break][break]
It's why she was ecstatic hearing that there was a club.[break][break]
Unfortunately, her anxiety betrayed her, and she was left standing at the rink with butterflies in her stomach. They kept her from saying anything and kept her from moving, save for the way her fingers fidgeted. Thankfully, it was something she could brush off as passing the time, rather than something she did out of nervousness. [break][break]
The girls are split into pairs for their first practice, randomly, it looked like. She's left with a young, bright-looking girl as her skating buddy. Aoife didn't know how to greet her, save for a small wave and nod of her head - it's unfortunate that her vibe was as icy as the rink.

| You know what they always said? The cow wouldn’t milk herself. That was why Verity arrived at the ice rink even before Panacea’s coach did. It was the norm, but even so, the coach always praised her. It was a perfect routine that the duo had fallen into. It turned the maiden into a teacher’s pet, but that wasn’t the only reason. She had talent and put in much work on her own time to perfect her skills on and off the ice. Not that she found any enjoyment in working to enhance her endurance on the track, but it wasn’t something she wished to skip out on.
However, that wasn’t what today’s club meeting was about. With it being the first meeting of the year and plenty of new students joining, it was just like any other first-day introductions. The teachers went over who they were, how to be safe, and other basic information—the boring stuff—before releasing the students into pairs. Most members, having been in the club before, easily paired off with each other, while those who were new slowly paired off with each other. Verity, on the other hand, stood still, stalling by the teacher, watching other members skate off in their duos.
Hands clasped behind her back, the maiden hoped for an uneven number of students. She preferred to practice on her own. After all, she had a pretty intense routine she wanted to practice—some of it anyway, since the other half of her pair had graduated the year before. Though it wouldn’t be for a while until the girls and boys started having club meetings together, she still hoped she’d find a partner before then. Which, by the looks of it, while not wanting to find a partner in this moment, seemed to be paired off rather quickly as the instructor nodded their head towards a lone girl, “Verity, do you mind?”
Yes—“Of course not, coach!” The short girl gave a mock solute. Since there was an even number of students, Verity wouldn’t get the kind of practice she wanted. At least not right this second, but she’d be staying in the rink after the club meeting was over. Therefore, she left her spot, skating towards a girl with flowing dark hair that seemed to make her skin glow. At first, she skated past the girl, only to circle around, skating backward so that when she stopped, she’d be facing the girl.
With a tilt of her head and a charming grin, Verity offered her hand to the girl, “I’m Verity!” She wondered how well the girl skated. Was she fairly new? Would she have to teach the other girl any basics?

She circled around her, as though to take her measure. [break][break]
Aoife wasn't unnerved; rather, she's used to it. The flashing of cameras and the gaze of photographers wasn't anything new to her, nor did she think it'd be new any day soon. When she stops, there's an effortless smile on her lips and an outstretched hand. [break][break]
Frankly, the energy was off putting. [break][break]
But if she thought about it, maybe it was Aoife coming off a little moody. She wanted to smile, truly, but her expression betrayed her when wearing a resting face, though paired with the purse of her lips. She is composed enough to extend her hand out and returned the underclassman's shake with a firm squeeze, paired with the nod of her head. "Aoife. Pleasure." her voice was soft, with the gleam of her other sunset coloured eye beneath pitch black bangs. Her lips raised, slightly, into the smallest smile in fear of seeming rude. People didn't like it when you didn't smile, she's learned. [break][break]
The dark haired junior skates back, taking her flowing, black hair and the fluttering midnight blue skirt of a dress with her. Fiery, sunset eyes stay on the young girl who seemed friendly enough, and it helped her feel a little more at ease. Her head tilted, slightly, revealing the other eye - just as bright - beneath slightly grown bangs. "Is there something we need to do?" she inquired, arms crossed beneath her bust in contemplation.

| The pink-haired maiden resisted the urge to frown at the sight of the girl pursing her lips. Verity was itching to have some real practice and spread her wings, but instead, she had to pair with a girl who seemed standoffish. However, it was better than being faced with someone who was outright cruel. She had had enough of those types for more than just one lifetime. It would be too soon if she had to deal with another. She’d be pulling out her luscious locks, and she wouldn't have wanted that—she took too much time to care for her hair.
Pulling her thoughts away from the past, she took a big breath as she extended her arms while cracking her fingers. “Have you stretched yet?” No reason for her not to play nice. “Wouldn’t want to get a cramp, nor be stiff.” Some of the other girls wouldn't be having a good time, as they went straight to running their blades over the ice. Oh well, they would learn… or maybe not. Coach would probably inform them. Though later pain wasn't the only reason to do so. “It's a plus that it will help with flexibility,” she added. The skill was so useful to a figure skater.
She put a finger in the air as she shut her eyes. “Have you ever had anyone help you stretch before?” Since her partner left last year, she really hadn't had anyone to push her past her limits. The girl almost lusted for the uncomfortable feeling of being forced into a position her body had not quite gotten used to. Her eyes opened with a tilt of her head. “How long have you been on the ice?” She started to skate backward near the edge of the rink, taking a chance to see the other girl skate. Valendeer wanted to know if she needed to play instructor.

Her partner didn't mind the flat tone - not outwardly. [break][break]
Aoife, to a degree, appreciated it. It makes it easier to speak to them, although she can't quite say the same about the way she carried a conversation. Still, it's enough to bring the smallest hint of a smile to her lips, her weight shifting where she stood over ice. "I've already stretched a bit" she hummed, though it was only the basic and solo stretches she did on her own. When she was with the tutor, they would help her with stretching and pushing her flexibility, and the caveat to being in school was that they couldn't help her out anymore. Nerve wrecking as it was, she had to remind herself that this isn't home school.[break][break]
Clearly the underclassman knew what she was doing, with how confident she was while verbally guiding Aoife through the rings. It was nice, it offered stability. Her skates plant into the ice and launched herself into large strides, making circles as the chilly air threw raven locks behind her shoulders, and slightly out of her face. "a long time." she briefly replied, with a deep breath and out. "Several years, now..?" she was unsure, only because time has become a blur. Father told her that the passage of time blurred as you got older, but she doesn't think she's at that age yet. It's funny how that worked. [break][break]
Aoife effortlessly skated around, up until she switched courses to skate backwards on the same track. "I had a tutor and took lessons back in Korea. She also helped me stretch." her head raised to the pinkette, gleaming oranges and reds fixated on the young girl.[break][break]
".. What about you?"

| Verity caught the smile that briefly appeared on the girl's face; she almost missed it. Could it be that the lady was just the shy type? Maybe. What the maiden was nearly certain of, however, was that this mysterious student did not come close to perfectly masking the emotions on her face. Only time would offer concrete evidence of whether she was correct or not. And right now was not quite the time, nor did she really want to push for the information. Instead, she slowly and steadily picked up speed, ready to slow down if Aoife couldn’t keep up. After all, even years of practice did not guarantee mastery of skills. Her cousins had been skating almost as long as she had, and neither was near her skill level the last time she saw the twins. Though, the pink-haired maiden severely doubted that was the case with her.
“Took to the ice like a fish does to water. Addicted since the age of six, which makes it… nine years now?” That was if her mental math was correct. “I’m mostly self-taught, didn’t have any type of coach until I was eleven.” Her body swayed on the ice as she smiled softly at the memory. “My mentor saw me skating one day and took me under her wing.” Mrs. Iversen had said she had pure talent and didn’t care that her aunt wouldn’t pay for lessons. “She first taught me how to fall; it’s surprising I didn’t really hurt myself before.” Verity shook her head. “It wasn’t too long after that she introduced me to Chase.”
Suddenly, she picked up speed, making sure she had distance from everyone before practicing a triple lutz. Of course, she landed it, before skating back towards her partner for the day. “He was my other half for the longest time, but he decided that he wanted to try hockey.” She offered a shrug. “Then I had nothing holding me back from moving to Canada.” Verity briefly wondered if Chase knew she wouldn’t have come if he had stayed her partner. “Pairs is where I shine the most, which is why I’m itching for us and the boys to start skating together.” She grinned before, again, getting distance and performing an upright spin. After finishing, she spoke up, making sure the other girl could hear her, “There’s nothing like letting someone just throw you into the air.” |

[nospaces] [attr="class","aoife-box"] [attr="class","aoife-large"] [attr="class","aoife-smallbox"] [attr="class","aoife-notes"] outfit[attr="class","aoife-iconborder"] [attr="class","aoife-icon"] [attr="class","aoife-textbox"] [attr="class","aoife-text"] She picked up skating just as quickly. [break][break] Or rather, she didn't struggle to follow the young student's stride. Aoife wasn't talented, by any means (or so she would insist), but her diligence bears more fruit than her talent. Aoife has her parents to thank, really, because of how they insisted that she expand her horizons - always rattling on about how she should be multi-talented - even if she doesn't quite hold herself to that same standard. Thus, the thought of skating with someone as talented and dedicated as Verity was more of an honour, and maybe a sliver intimidating; not that it would ever show on her face, nor cause a quiver in her voice. [break][break] "You sound passionate." she hummed, amused. Intimidating as it was, it was always nice meeting someone who held the same amount of dedication for their craft, or for their skills. Aoife had yet to meet someone who had a goal or passion to be a bad person, because they all had their hands full with looking to the future. It looked like to her, that she didn't have to worry about this young girl being unwelcoming - her paranoia can rest. [break][break] Aoife didn't have to speak all too much. In fact, she's grateful that the pinkette did most of the chatter, especially since Aoife herself had.. little words. She focused most of her time following her strides and strut, only stopping briefly to watch her perform the triple lutz with precision. The Junior claps her hands, briefly, followed by a tilted head after brief admiration. "Sounds like you were fond of him." Aoife readied herself on the ice and gradually picked up speed, skating backwards when she could discern enough space for herself. With no people in the way, she picked up speed skating backwards and quickly launched herself into the air, which in turn had her spin to perform a quick, double flip jump before her skates landed back onto the ice. [break][break] She took a moment and brushed her dark hair from her face, the frigid layer from the ice in the air chilling her. "I've never had a partner before," she admitted, fingers tented together with wrists resting against her stomach. "But I would love to see you performing with one." she raised her voice and came to a slow halt in her glide across the rink.[break][break] Unfortunately, her voice is loud enough on the rink for other to have heard, and the student only vaguely lowered her volume again. "Did you compete professionally?" | "Sounds like you were fond of him."
Verity thought back to the boy, but she couldn’t quite decide if she had been fond of him or just comfortable with him. While the duo had spent much of their time together, it was mostly on the ice. They had almost never met up outside of practice, so while she regretted his sudden departure, was she truly sad about it? The maiden wasn’t sure if such a feeling was within her. However, she had been skilled at shoving her emotions deep down, even to the point where she could trick herself. The thought made her shiver, and with that, she pushed it away, replacing it with a cheery smile and offering only a shrug.
Nodding in approval at the technique of the double flip, she skated closer to the girl. “Do you need a scrunchie?” Verity asked. As pretty as it could look with hair flowing, having had long hair herself, she knew it could get in the way. Plus, it had been nice to know her vision wouldn’t be obstructed. Verity remembered face-planting into a wall as a child; ever since then, her hair had to be up. “I have some unused ones in my bag,” she added, gesturing with her thumb in the general direction of her sports bag. “Pretty sure there was a monster hiding under my bed, eating all my hair ties.” She placed her hand on her chest. “And if I hadn’t had extras, I would have run out in a few months.” She clenched the hand that rested on her chest. That damned monster. Using the tips of her fingers, she wiped away a fake tear. “He was a hungry fellow. Rest in peace to those brave hair ties.”
She shook her head with a smile. “Thankfully, I had plenty to use.” Honestly, it was probably just her losing them—how many had actually been under her bed? Several, at least. Would she have looked under there? No, she didn’t think she would have. The monster could keep them. Plus, it had always been a nice surprise to find a floor scrunchie.
Verity chuckled to herself at the thought before glancing over at Aoife. “And yes, I did compete.” She swayed her body into a smooth, easy rhythm. “Where I could.” She had been at the age to try and enter the Olympics, if just barely... She should have talked to the coach about it. Her heart had started marching to the beat of a person going ham on a drum. The idea had excited her. She really needed to have found a partner soon. She had wanted to start before she turned seventeen, if possible. Because of this, she had offered an unabashed grin to the other girl. “Fingers crossed that bigger comps were on the horizon!”
The pink-haired girl performed a lazy-looking spin, almost as if she would have lost balance, but she had never been in any real danger of falling. “What about you? Had you competed?” she asked. Was she someone she’d have to have watched out for competitively?

She paid a sparing glance to the scrunchie, then plucked it from between the girl's fingers. It took a moment for her to properly process the gesture, then prompted a slightly delayed "Thank you." as she had the scrunchie around her wrist and streaks of pitch in her hands. She was always told to keep her hair tied up in a bun or tied up in a ponytail and - though she masked it quite well - there was slight hesitation that followed it. Personally, she never quite liked the idea of her neck being exposed, nor did she like it when her face was too visible, beautiful and bright as it was. Her pale skin was a contrast to dark locks, as was bright, sectoral heterochromia. [break][break]
No, she didn't like the attention. [break][break]
But maybe it was okay here, because everyone else was too occupied with their own skating. [break][break]
"Mmn. You're skilled, so I'm sure you won't have a problem." because of course she participated competitively. Aoife, to a degree, wished that she had the same freedom to pick for herself; her parents were always arguing with her at the centre. There were nights it was about her grades, others about her schedule, others about her public image, or about what route was best with her. Never did she recall them approaching her themselves, asking what she wanted to do. Even as she neared adulthood, they argued that they knew best. Granted, had she the choice, she wouldn't know either. [break][break]
She pondered with a steady pace kept next to Verity. "... No, I've never thought about it." she hummed, and she would be lying if she said she did. "I was too busy with studying and work back home, so it never crossed my mind."[break][break]
Earlier, Verity was clearly jesting, though Aoife only cocked her head to the left in slight contemplation. Her brow raised, with a sentence started with "maybe a rat took the hair ties..?" before she could properly process it. I mean, if she spoke of a monster eating hair ties, she could only assume it was a small rodent, couldn't she? Or maybe it was a pet, or a small animal, though she doubted it could be unless she had a pet. That wasn't to say that Verity was a messy person, by any means! Surely, she was well kept, so she didn't have to worry about any rodents, and even then, rats didn't quite care for cleanline--[break][break]
It was in her thought did Aoife finally process her mistake, and her brows furrow along with a narrowed gaze to the side. "E-Excuse me, I'm sorry, I didn't know you were.. kidding.." [break][break]
She could crawl into a hole right now. She wanted to.

| “Thanks.”
Verity offered the older student a grin in return for the thought of appreciation, all while looking around the rink, as she didn’t want to just awkwardly watch Aoife tie up her locks. Instead, she observed the new club members stumbling over each other, while those with seniority chatted away. None of them really put much effort into any real practice. What a waste, thought the maiden; if they were already here, they might as well make the most of it. She didn’t understand why, even as hobbyists, they wouldn’t want to get better. If you enjoyed it, why not be the best you could be? It was something she might never fully understand.
“Now, ain’t you just as lovely as a rose in bloom, sugar?” Verity had never been interested in girls, but she could appreciate a girl who was pretty. And Miss Song was just that. However, she didn’t draw any more attention to the fact beyond that brief acknowledgment. After all, Verity had noticed the hesitation the girl offered, brief as it was. She quickly changed the topic afterward, “If you have any questions about the club, feel free to ask me.” She nodded to the coach. “Though I’m sure she explained everything and will answer any questions after these little introduction warmups.”
