Know what day it was? [break][break]
She didn't either, which is why she had to check the calendar clipped to the tack board set up just next to her bed. To the wall right next to the stickied shelf of the same dorm she was in last year. It was a shame that her previous dorm mate ended up transferring out due to family reasons, but things get hectic and, close as they were, Thalia understood. It'd be hypocritical of her to get upset at someone when something came up, right? Exactly, so it was water under the bridge - it didn't make her feel any better. [break][break]
Summer vacation was over and Thalia was back to the dorm early, the week before classes start. Her summer was spent like all other teenagers - spent back at home and with family. Her summer was spent learning how to cook from her grandma, catching up with her brother, and awkwardly trying to catch up with her stepmother and father - though the tension stretched like a thin string got to be a little too suffocating. Living in the house for three months was tiresome and stuffy, but school wasn't much better. [break][break]
Thalia laid in bed after everything was finally unpacked. Her corkboard was filled with polaroid pictures and decorated with washi tape. Her desk had cute cinnamoroll stationary and pens, with other white and yellow stickers and artist-made journal sitting opened in the centre. At the feet of her bed was a hefty laptop with a controller attached with a cord, the top of it littered in slightly worn stickers beneath a few, newer sparkly ones - or maybe a few mailing stamps for the aesthetic. [break][break]
Her side of the room and bed was already decorated with fairy lights, all turned off with daylight still bright. The curtain and window was left ajar, slightly, to let the breeze and sunlight into the little dorm. Between the beds, on the floor, was a little white stand with a racquet mounted and charging; the electric mesh freshly cleaned of bugs she caught trying to crawl through any cracks in the otherwise well kept room. She shouldn't be laying down, especially not when her roommate was supposed to be coming in any of these days. Thalia had already prepared with a small box of cupcakes on her desk, just next to the journal sitting out in the open. The junior laid flat on her stomach, her elbows kept her upper body up with her eyes glued to the box of vanilla and chocolate. [break][break]
"Would she even like cupcakes..?" she pondered.

There's no light or hope in the tunnel, can you take my hand and save me from the darkness in my heart? When she got the notice earlier in the day that she was changing dorm rooms again, June wasn't really surprised. The girl they had her with the year prior was insufferable. Where June was a neat freak, and everything had its place, the other girl left things EVERYWHERE.
Like some sort of unhinged psychopath.
So June didn't see why it was such a problem, when one day while her roommate was out, she gathered all of the other girl's belongings and threw them onto her bed, with a note demanding that she learn to clean her trash up, or next time she'd find it where it belonged.
Which... Apparently didn't go over well with the administration. And was also an irreconcilable difference between the two, so the school found it easier to just move one of them. No words were spoken between the two while one of the teachers watched over them, as June finished packing her possessions and turned in her key to that room. Following the teacher from her former room, June looked at her reassignment one last time, and tilted her head.
Thalia. She didn't recognize the name, which meant not a girl in her year. Catching the -Junior Year a bit further down. So she was an older student? Was that normal? A question she posed to her escort, who informed her that it happens occasionally, when one of the older students would be the one looking for a new roommate. Arriving at her new dorm, the teacher placed the bags she had helped carry down, and gave June her new key. Telling her to atleast TRY and get along with Thalia.
Like it would matter.
It would only be a matter of time before her new roommate either hated her guts, or ignored her existence. Something she was all too used to.
Besides, she only had to put up with it for the year right? And then she could request a new roommate, or if she were lucky, have her name drawn for one of the nicer, single occupant dorm rooms. Agreeing to try to make this arrangement work, June thanked the teacher for their assistance before popping the key in the lock and letting herself into the room, under the assumption that her roommate either wouldn't be there yet, or would be out when she arrived.
Neither of which were accurate, June realized.
Thankfully, aside from laying on her stomach on her bed like an animal, the other girl was atleast neat. Knocking on the now open door, June decided to try and make good on her promise to the teacher about behaving and making it work. "Are you Thalia? |

A cute girl into the dorm with the click of the door, blonde hair cut into a short bob and bags in tow. The junior lifted herself from the bed, a smile bright as sunshine itself to her lips and in the gleam of her eyes. Her new roommate was cute, though the air around her seemed a little bit more sullen than her joyous impression. Maybe if she styled her hair a bit? Yeah, that'd make her shine a bit more vibrantly. Thalia caught herself with the gently judgement and quickly shook the thought out of her head. [break][break]
June, wasn't it? She didn't look familiar.. but she looked too young to be a senior. Thalia rose her arm in a casual salute, with her body leaned against her other arm to keep herself up. Her legs idly swayed behind her to a rhythm. "Heya~." she chimed, before slowly lifting herself up to properly sit on the mattress, cross-legged. "That's me, Thalia is I~. I'm guessing you're June, right?" unless they decided to change it up last minute, or she was talking to someone who kidnapped her actual dormmate. That latter option was much less convincing. She quickly scooted to the edge of her bed, hopping off to slip on a pair of cushiony, boba slippers in the comfort of their new home. Her arms were held behind her back, head tilted to the side. "Do you need help moving anything in? I know moving stuff alone is an absolute pain." she chuckled, then leaned forwards, slightly. [break][break]
"It's cool if not, though. I don't wanna accidentally rummage through anything too private."

There's no light or hope in the tunnel, can you take my hand and save me from the darkness in my heart? Nodding her head briefly in acknowledgement when her new roommate guessed her name, June started taking a quick look at the room she'd be sharing for the next year at minimum.
Was it slightly bigger than her old room? Or was she just imagining things, since now she could actually see the walls and floors when they weren't all covered in posters and other shit. Maybe both? It definitely seemed bigger. Snapping her gaze back to the other girl, June had to stop herself from cringing at how excited Thalia seemed to be at her arrival.
Dropping the two bags she was carrying by her bed, June turned back to the doorway, but paused, when Thalia asked if she wanted a hand bringing her things in. "No... No, I'm good." Shaking her head softly, June started hauling her bags in, setting them by her bed. With a couple of bags being hastily shoved under her bed instead. No one would get to see the contents of those, not if she had a say about it.
Spending the next few minutes, in awkward silence as she slowly brought in the remainder of her bags, June unpacked her belongings, and put them away/on her desk when it came to her laptop and some notebooks. While unpacking June found her gaze continued drifting back to her roommate's face. And, she had to admit the other girl was cute.
With her long honeysuckle colored hair, bright hazel eyes, and friendly smile, she definitely looked like a real charmer. Grabbing the small box from her things, June pulled out the few small trophies and awards from her recitals and competitions that she allowed herself to keep, and set them on her desk as well.
"So, uh... Do you like music?" And immediately cringed at her own awkward attempt to strike up conversation. Do you like music? Really? God, why didn't she just ask something equally as stupid, like "Do you breathe air?" With her cheeks dusting red, she waited for the inevitable mocking response, while refusing to meet Thalia's gaze.

Anxiety was no stranger. [break][break]
At least, not to Thalia. She knew how ravenous the maws of anxiety could get, especially when it came to meeting someone new. There was a time where she was too socially anxious and awkward, a time where she didn't know how to speak to people properly. There was a time she'd overthink and say the wrong thing, or a time where she would overshare or would get too friendly. On a bad day, Thalia would worry about it - but if she was going to be living with a girl, she preferred not to walk on egg shells. [break][break]
Of course, she didn't want to leave her feeling awkward while pulling her things out. Thalia turned her attention to her phone, laid faced down on the bed. The egg themed phone was picked up to be idly flicked though, the student herself spun around and casually seated herself. June, she seemed, wasn't much of a talker, and that was alright - it'd be more awkward if she just stared at her in their silence, wouldn't it? [break][break]
Her attention is piqued hearing June pipe up, then Thalia's small smile returned to her lips. Bright eyes raised from the screen of the phone to try and meet the younger student's - but not without glazing her eyes over the line of trophy and awards won by the little lady. Cute, they were cute, and they were impressive (seeing them made her wish she continued with piano so many years ago). [break][break]
But in response, Thalia hummed and pondered over her options. "Yeah, a bit too much." she chuckled, leg lifted to rest over the other in a cross. "God, I could never pick one genre, but if I had to pick--" she counted on her fingers with a brow quirked "maybe alternative rock? Drum n' Bass is really good, too." she pondered between the two, before finally settled with "but classical and lo-fi will have my heart when I write or study." [break][break]
Maybe she can relate, maybe she doesn't; Thalia knew how it made her sound like a nerd. [break][break]
"What about you? What kind of music do you listen to?~"

There's no light or hope in the tunnel, can you take my hand and save me from the darkness in my heart? Nodding her head, as Thalia listed off her favorite genres of music, June continued unpacking her things, while she listened. Turning so Thalia wouldn't see the relief on her face that she didn't mock her for asking such a stupid question.
Glancing over her shoulder when the question was turned back on her, June's mouth curled to the side as she hummed, thinking about her answer. "Oh, uh, I don't... Know? I just kind of, let Spotify play whatever comes on?" She had never really sat down, to try and figure out what genres of music that she enjoyed above others.
Sure there were the occasional songs that came on and she would immediately skip them, but... She just liked music. That was it. Hell, even most of the music she had on her phone came from suggestions that she overheard others discussing, or was told directly that she looked like she'd enjoy something the odd time someone actually spoke to her, and wasn't put off by her usual dour demeanor.
Should she just let the conversation die there? Thalia did look like she was interested in whatever was on her phone... But, It was also, kind of nice to talk to someone who clearly didn't know anything about her, or the rumors that circulated about her.
Glancing to the trophies on her desk, June picked one of the oldest ones up and turned it slowly in her hands, before setting it back down gently. Schooling her face back to a look of neutrality, she looked back over to Thalia, who sat on the edge of her bed with a friendly, inviting smile on her face. One that made June want to keep talking, even if only for a little longer. "Do... You play any instruments?" Maybe... If the older girl did,then they could try and bond over that?
God, this whole talking and being civil thing was hard.

She's nervous and a little awkward - Thalia could tell. [break][break]
But that was okay, because even the best of people get nervous around someone they don't know. Thalia knew when someone was trying to force a conversation, or knew when someone was struggling to take the lead. The only thing that kept the junior from grabbing the conversation by the reins was how overbearing, or loud, she could get. After all, she knew; she knew how much rambling she could do. She knew how it could look rude. She knew how she's lost friends, who called her self-centred for that kind of behaviour. This time was going to be different, she told herself. This time, she wasn't going to scare someone away. [break][break]
Oh! But there was that worry about being patronizing if she looked like someone trying to encourage someone else... would it feel like she was looking down on June? Oh, she certainly hoped not! If so, though, maybe a stupid smile and grin and sunny disposition would be enough to curb any of that feeling away? Though she'd learn to be friendly over the year or so at Panacea, it was still hard - it was always hard. [break][break]
"Ahhh, I feel that. Especially when you just wanna turn your brain off and see where it takes you." she had smart shuffle on, occasionally, when she played music on her personal playlist. Or, when she was listening to some playlists for creative writing and just needed to add more music. Sometimes the music was an absolute hit, sometimes it was a miss. [break][break]
She hummed at the question, then tilted her head with a contemplative expression. "Lessee..." her cheek pouted, her mind raced through the different instruments she'd ever burned through, only to have her parents stop her before she could tap into any specialization. Always the jack of all trades, master of none - it put a sour taste in her mouth when she thought about it. Granted, you'd never be able to tell by the smile, or the way she affectionately reminisced. "I played the piano when I was a kid, and I loved it." she hold up her picky finger, followed by "I played the flute for a while in middle school, but my asthma didn't let me play it for too long." she held up her ring finger, followed by a nervous chuckle "then finally I played the drums, though it felt more like playing a rhythm game." she held up her middle finger, with a chuckle and smile on her lips. [break][break]
Thalia tilted her head slightly, just so her bright eyes could catch a better glimpse of the trophies. The grand piano sculpted on one of them made it obvious enough. "You definitely play waaaay better than I do~. Not easy to do, and it's super impressive!" she praised her, with the same, genuine tone and verbal pep in her step.

There's no light or hope in the tunnel, can you take my hand and save me from the darkness in my heart? June shook her head when Thalia misunderstood what she'd meant, when she said that she just listens to whatever comes on.
"It's not that. I just, never really had a chance to listen to much music when I was still living with my parents. They said it was a distraction. So I don't... Know, what I should like, or not." Aside from her either practising, or playing the piano in a completely separate part off the house, there was never a time that June could remember hearing music in their home.
The few times she had either hummed a song she was learning, or enjoyed playing in her childhood, had been met with an irritated scoff, and she was always quickly told to "knock off that hideous noise." by her mother.
Her eyes drifted back to one of the oldest awards on her desk, a third place trophy.
One she kept to remind her to always strive for first.
Since it was the only time even one of her parents had bothered to come to watch her perform. Picking it up, she remembers the harsh words her mother had for her, when she had attempted to show off her trophy. "Third place? Roses don't get third place. Throw that embarrassment away, understood?"
Quickly setting it back down, she bit the inside of her cheek, to stop herself from showing any discomfort.
Was it good for her mental health to keep something with such negative connotations? Definitely not. But she still hoped, that one day, her mother might come to see her perform again, even if it were rather unlikely. Sighing softly, she made sure all of her awards were lined up, before collapsing the box they came in, and setting it to the side.
And when Thalia answered her next question, June paused in her unpacking while the older girl listed everything she'd started to learn, before giving up and moving to the next. June didn't understand why. If Thalia loved playing the piano so much, why stop? She supposed, having asthma and needing to stop playing the flute made some sense, but even then, why give up so easily?
Was Thalia the type of girl who just abandoned new things on a whim? And did that mean her current friendly disposition would fade away too? She frowned slightly at the thought, even if she didn't mean to. Shaking her head again, when the older girl praised her ability to play, June levelled a tense but curious look at Thalia. "Why'd you quit then? If you loved the piano so much, I mean."

Maybe she did, and she got a little too ahead of herself. Though Thalia blundered a tiny bit, she wore her bright smile all the same. The smile at least, was never fake - or maybe it was the one thing from her that was real, or something that was her own. Thalia, with her bright, sunny gaze traced June's eyes towards a third place trophy, to which she made a little mental note. To Thalia, any reward should have been recognized, no matter how mundane, and success regardless of degree should have been celebrated (unlike her parents before her, who only expected the world while tearing her down for overachieving).[break][break]
Martial arts, instruments, singing, art, technology, chess, track, skating, skiing, language-- she's lost track of how many subjects she's only ever stuck herself into, only for the knowledge to be ripped away. Though she excelled in everything she did by effort, desire and some degree of talent, she still vividly remembered how her step mother would sneer as she came home, proud with the top marks. She remembered how her brother would come back with subpar marks, and how her mother would grab something of hers to break, then break, then break - claiming that she distracted him. Yes, she remembered, it was all her fault. [break][break]
Thalia remembered, but she still smiled and hummed at the question about the piano; it wasn't her choice, she wanted to say, but it'd open another can of worms - this isn't something you tell someone you just met. She didn't want to be scaring her roommate, after all, but she also didn't like the idea of lying (not like anyone could tell; she wore her heart on her sleeve with lies mixed in with truths). "Not enough time, and parents were super strict." she chuckled, her fingers tented together in her lap. "They sold the keyboard and I wasn't allowed to do any after school things. I tried to learn a tiny bit by watching videos, but it's not the same when you aren't actually pressing the keys, y'know?" did it sound depressing? Maybe it did, and she really didn't mean for it to be. Despite it, her bright smile lowered to warm, eyes with somber energy behind them. [break][break]
"Not that I complain too much. I only had lessons for like.. a few months, so I never got too passionate or attached. I still loved it, though." [break][break]
It was a good escape.

There's no light or hope in the tunnel, can you take my hand and save me from the darkness in my heart? June let her mouth snap shut, when the other girl just kept looking at her after mentioning her parents dislike of music as a distraction. And she winced. She'd definitely overshared by telling her that.
Honestly, she'd assumed the conversation would just die off as Thalia would make some excuse to leave the room, or just turn back to her phone, and ignore her for the remainder of their shared time in the room. But surprisingly, that wasn't the case. As Thalia answered her question with a hum and a smile, before explaining that she just didn't have enough time, and her parents were strict.
Something June knew all too well, remembering her own mother turning her nose up at the idea of June joining one of the various groups and activities at her old school. After all, mingling with "the common folk" was beneath them. According to the Rose Matriarch anyway. Setting the suitcase with her casual clothes on her bed, she opened it, and let out a clearly displeased sound when Thalia mentioned that her parents had sold her keyboard, which, was a telling sign that either one, or both wanted her to stop playing.
Either because she lacked talent, or, well, maybe they disliked Thalia, similarly to how June's parents clearly loathed her.
Biting her lip, June hesitated before asking, "But... Why not try again now that you're here?" Scooping up some of her clothes, she started putting them away, her casual wear set to the side as she made sure none of her spare uniforms were wrinkled, and were folded neatly, setting one aside for the next day.
Was she prying too much into the other girl's life by pestering her about all these trivial matters?
Should she ask?
Should she just apologize for being so nosy?
Glancing back to her roommate, June could see the smile on Thalia's face falter for a moment. Yeah, she should probably apologize, she must have brought up something uncomfortable, or a bitter memory in her questioning. "Thalia? I apologize, on the chance that I overstepped by asking these things."

Panacea has been such a great influence on her, yet through all the studies and the people she's spoken to and befriended, it still baffled her to remember that her treatment was abnormal. Thalia, as bright as she was, forgot that what she went through wasn't the standard, forgot that it wasn't normal, forgot that to a degree, it was illegal. Even when she tells others that they shouldn't have to settle for less, she forgets that she shouldn't be treated the same way. [break][break]
Forgetting made it bearable. [break][break]
Smiling came naturally after that. If she could forgive herself for all the mistakes and trip-ups she's made, forgiving someone else was child's play - especially when she didn't think they did something wrong altogether. So, when June expressed her apologies, Thalia only gave her a hearty chuckle and shake of her head. "Hey, no need to apologize!" not a lie to cross her lips, but it was ambiguous enough to herself. "Asking questions is just part of getting to know someone, y'know?" so it was no big deal if she was asking about her life, or if she was getting curious. [break][break]
"If anything, I'm flattered that you're curious about me." she beamed, fingers tented in front of her.[break][break]
"But, hmm.." she contemplated, with less of any heavy air that could hang over their heads. The train of thought was ended with the casual cock of her head. "Money? And some time, yeah." her tongue pressed against the inside of her cheek "I'm already on the volleyball team, paranormal activities club and--" she listed on her hands "and I'm working part-time in town, then there's volunteering.." she recounted, up until she let out a exasperated (and admittedly, slightly exaggerated) sigh. "It's chalked up to not enough time, and not enough money." so it wasn't anything personal, she thought. June didn't do anything wrong, or say anything wrong, but something told her that she was a little anxious about it. [break][break]
"Buuuut enough about me" she hummed "you have any other hobbies? Things you wanna try out in between classes? In town?" [break][break]
"I know some really good places that make super cute pastries! Or serve good boba, if you're into that~."

When the question of hobbies was brought up, and Thalia expressed curiosity at how June spent her free time, she hummed, as her mouth curled into a slight pout as she thought about it. "I... Read? And I like to look at the night sky I suppose." Those nights when she could manage to sit by the window in quiet and just watch the twinkling of the stars in the sky? She wouldn't trade those for anything.
Settling back into silence, June started wracking her brain, there wasn't much else she really did for well, for fun. She thought, before glancing towards the foot of her bed, with a grimace. Well... there was her other hobby. But she would die, before talking about that. And if she had her way, the two suitcases filled with cosplay outfits currently stored under her bed would go to the grave with her. Preferably before she let anyone else see them, or her wearing them for that matter, she mused, before looking back towards Thalia.
Please god, never let anyone she knew find her Instagram account.
"Oh, and swimming." She liked swimming. There was just something so liberating about it. Just her and the water around her, allowing her to get lost in her own little world. And while she had wanted to mention that she liked baking too... But, well, considering the strawberry cake she'd made in Home Ec near the end of the previous year, and that she had used salt instead of sugar in the icing? Maybe it was for the best she didn't. Even if the cake had come out looking great...
Being shaken from her thoughts she looked back to Thalia in mild surprise as she mentioned knowing a great place for both pastries, and Boba. Was... Thalia inviting her to spend time together after today? Should she say yes?
She'd never had Boba before, but she had seen some of the other girls on campus drinking it or talking about it every now and then. And it did look like it might be good... Biting her lip, June gripped her arm awkwardly, as she thought about it.
After all, the guidance counsellor did say that sometimes people were indeed just being kind, and not everyone was lying to her, or expecting anything in return, aside from maybe, her friendship. And while June wasn't much of a gambler, she decided that maybe, just once, she'd risk it.
"I... I think I'd like that." She spoke softly, a shaky smile on her face, as she nodded her head. Praying to whatever higher power there was that would listen, in the hopes that she wouldn't completely fuck this up.
