Eyes on the ball, eyes on the net, eyes on the ball. [break][break]
It was the new year of a new school, and she needed a distraction. The soundless evenings of an empty dorm room were getting to be a bit too much and her roommate was always away in clubs, or sports, or hanging out with friends - something that the sophomore on a scholarship was sorely lacking in. Even though she took that scholarship at the behest of her brother and although transferring schools wasn't anything new to her, settling down all over again never got any easier. It stressed her out, in fact, but there was some excitement and the vague taste of freedom when she was finally free from those walls. [break][break]
Home was starting to feel like home. [break][break]
But her head was still in that house, she knew, even if she desperately wanted to avoid admitting it. Thus, Thalia took matters into her own hands to apply to the volleyball team. She wasn't the best, but she liked to think that she wasn't the worst, so she'd probably be able to get this going - right? Volleyball couldn't be that hard; all she had to do was hit the ball over the net, or keep the ball from falling on their side of the net, right? Simple enough, simple as that. [break][break]
She was alone in the gym, practicing her volleys and her bumps. "Sixteen... seventeen... eighteen..." she counted in a rhythm, eyes on the white ball that was kept in the air in a rhythm. The gym, otherwise, was quiet with the setting sun's rays peeking through the large, raised windows. "Twenty!" she stopped, then caught the ball as it fell into her hands. Good, that was good - she was able to keep the ball up in the air, so she wouldn't be too much of a burden, right? Right. [break][break]
But just because she could bump the ball, it didn't mean she knew how to attack. The gym was empty at this time, since none of the teams met up and the track team was doing their rounds around campus, so it should be okay, right? [break][break]
The blonde sophomore glanced around and, with a shrug of her shoulders, lifted the ball up into the air a few times. On the last, she set off on her back foot, which pedaled her to the net. Her arm threw the ball into the air and, at the height of her jump, her other hand followed through the land a nasty spike aimed at the ground. [break][break]
... Only for the ball's trajectory to be slightly skewed. [break][break]
Not enough to bounce against the wall, but just enough to smash into the body (or god forbid, the face) of the poor soul to open the gym door.
