Her first mistake was assuming the Commons would stay quiet on a day like today. [break][break] She figured given the nice weather outside that other students would have better things to do than stay cooped up inside. Everyone but her, of course, because she was keen on getting ahead on her school work. The earlier she got ahead on her assignments, the easier she'd have it once the semester was in full swing and she was juggling her course load, her student council duties, and this semester's theatre production.[break][break] Only the Commons didn't stay quiet for long. A crowd of freshmen piled in, oohing and ahhing as they looked left and right around the campus. A rowdy group of guys came through, juggling a soccer ball that was clearly not meant to be kicked around indoors. And in her frustration, as she slammed her textbook shut, a pile of her things fell from her table—including her deck of tarot cards.[break][break] She grimaced as she leaned down to pick up her things one by one. Good grief. As soon as she collected all of her belongings, she'd relocate somewhere else. The library perhaps? She'd hate to be forced to retire to her dorm room already. [break][break] In her haste to retrieve everything, she missed a single card that flew further away than the rest. And the looming figure standing right behind her by the time she made it back into her seat. She nearly cursed aloud from how startled she was, which wouldn't have been becoming of a student council member whatsoever. [break][break] "Can I help you?" she bit out, clearly aggravated by their lack of consideration for her personal space.

COMMONS [attr="class","brenpost-o"]Brendon had fortunately reached Little Cove before the crowds, otherwise he would have gone without another meal. The small café, tucked away at the eastern end of the main building, served as a convenient spot to grab a bite without having to venture into the Oakwood Hall. However, the café often became crowded by others with the same idea. As he left the café’s area, a large group of students shuffled past him, one spinning a soccer ball on their finger while the others laughed loudly and chatted amongst themselves. The commotion was a reminder of why he had to spend most of his time outside of the Goldenleaf dormitory this year, instead of enjoying the solitude of his room. The thought soured his mood. He wondered if he’d be stuck with a roommate for the rest of the year or if he’d eventually get back the suite he had to himself last year. Regardless, as he entered the Commons, he briefly glimpsed the chaos that had transformed the area into a sort of rush hour. A copper-haired girl was gathering an array of scattered items from the floor—some of which looked to be tarot cards—while another group of students piled in. This was exactly why he preferred to avoid the Learning Commons altogether, Brendon thought with mild annoyance, stepping back to give the group plenty of room. However, his foot slipped on something slick, forcing him to quickly catch his balance. His gaze darted downward to find a stray tarot card glinting beneath his shoe. Great…, He inwardly groaned, putting two-and-two together. He wasn’t exactly the sociable type seeing as he hadn’t felt the slightest urge to help someone retrieve their scattered belongings. But now that he had… stepped on one of her possessions, it placed him into an awkward position. Brendon picked up the card, which revealed the words “The High Priestess” along with a detailed illustration. However, as he approached the girl, she nearly jumped, startled. Now that he was closer, she didn’t particularly seem friendly; she was barely hiding the scowl across her face. “Can I help you?” She snapped sharply, her tone almost biting. Oddly enough, Brendon didn’t take any sort of offense. In a way, he supposed he could relate. Plus, he wasn’t exactly in the best situation himself, and for a moment, he wondered if he could get away with not mentioning that he had stepped on her card. After all, she hadn’t seemed to notice. But as he held the card out wordlessly, his eyes caught the large shoeprint glaring up from its surface, and he nearly groaned. “I, uh… kind of stepped on it. After her nerves had settled from her initial surprise, she realized from the boy's uniform that she was speaking to an underclassman. The thought made the harsher lines on her face fade, her expression easing into something more approachable. More suited to a member of the student council. [break][break] Still, the smile she put on was tight around the edges upon seeing the large footprint on her card. It was obvious the boy had stepped on it before thinking to offer it back to her. How lovely. The High Priestess stared back at her, silently judging, reminding her to be patient. [break][break] Be reasonable, she told herself. It was very likely that he didn't do so on purpose. Really, if she were to be contemplative for a moment, she would acknowledge it was her own fault for letting the deck spill off the table in the first place. Perhaps that was what the card was trying to tell her all along. [break][break] Unfortunately, the student happened to catch her on an off day. [break][break] "I hope you don't make a habit of stepping on other's belongings," she said, her voice at odds with the way she coolly stared at the mark he'd left on her card.

“That you did,” she answered breezily, all too bemused by his naïveté. Had he really never encountered a malicious student at Panacea? She supposed the way his brows furrowed into a small frown told her everything she needed to know. [break][break] Perhaps it was for the best. Judging by the color of his uniform, he was only a sophomore. Far be it from her to have to explain to him the way the world worked when one wasn’t born into a life of absolute privilege. [break][break] Seeing as he was starting to get pushy about it, she reached for the familiar card at last, taking it between her fingers. [break][break] In turn, she extended her own hand, palm up. Brendon’s gaze shifted briefly around the bustling commons, seeing how crowded it remained, especially near the entrance. As he searched for a path that would let him escape, the girl’s outstretched hand quickly drew his attention back to her. “Hand me your handkerchief,” She ordered, and Brendon stared at her, momentarily stunned. Instead of complying, he scowled, taking the card back as quickly as he’d handed it over. He rubbed it against the soft cotton of his shirt until the footprint was removed, at least to the best of his ability. “All right, there you go.” He muttered, handing it back to her and then taking a step backward, his hands raising somewhat in defense. It was strange how someone so much shorter than him could exude such an air of confidence and superiority. N—Not to say he wanted to judge. He just wanted to be done with the whole ordeal. She looked less than impressed by the gesture (He wanted to transfer the dirt from his shoe onto his shirt?) but was mildly more pleasant when she took the card back this time. At least it was footprint-free this time around. And he even took the time to place a more appropriate amount of distance between them. So he had the capacity to be courteous after all.

"Great. That'll be all," she said, ready to return to her own business. But as she shuffled the card back into her deck to pack it up, another jumped out. What was with her today? She was all out of sorts.

As she moved to pick it up, she took note of the fact that it was the Knight of Cups. How peculiar. It was hard to distinguish whether it should be read upright or not. Either way, maybe it meant something. To him, if not her. Jumpers were strange in that way.

"Hey," she called out before he could leave. "I'm not sure if it means anything to you, but..." Which begged the question why she was even bringing this up in the first place. But she figured passing along a message couldn't hurt, especially considering he'd done her a favor.

Not that it really mattered in the end—she was a senior, and they didn’t share any classes. However, it meant she undoubtedly had classes with that other girl—the black-haired, Russian delinquent. The thought suddenly made him feel a little sorry for her. How in the world did that other girl even attend class? He could only imagine her trying to fight everybody. The curiosity over whether the girl had ever dealt with the Russian thug kept him standing there a moment too long. Long enough for her to gather her things and walk off first. As she passed, he tensed, instinctively stepping back, before finally making his own exit—in an opposite direction.
