EDUARD A. WINKLER Panacea academy, british columbia, canadA One thing most people didn’t know about Eduard, is that he was quite the avid reader. Aside from spending a lot of his free time at home watching television shows, he spent way too much time reading books of all kinds. His favorite genre happened to be crime dramas, but he didn’t shy away from reading books about just about anything. One of those happened to be a YA Horror novel all about a vampire killer haunting a small town and the people who were after him. There was romance, drama and death, with a hero that was starting out in the fire department. Hit pretty close to home, and he couldn’t help but love the main character for that.
After school was over, he drove his car to the bookstore in town, and went to the new releases section to pick up the book. It was volume three, the final book in the trilogy, and he’d waited a year for it to come out. And lucky for him! It seemed he picked up the last copy on the shelf!
He tucked it under his arm, and started to peruse some of the other shelves. He knew he probably shouldn’t have gone crazy, but he couldn’t help himself. Hell, he almost felt ashamed knowing that there was a rather huge stack of bargain books he’d bought over the last couple of years that he hadn’t even touched, and here he was looking for more.
But even though he told himself that he probably shouldn’t, after an hour or so, he’d ended up with a pile of half-off books in his arms, and was back up at the register. He set them on the counter- more like dropped them- and glanced up at the cashier, who offered him an awkward smile.
“Hello sir!” She said, “Did you find everything okay?”
Eduard nodded, “Yeah. Found too much honestly.”
The girl offered him a laugh. He knew it was forced, but he didn’t mind. She started scanning the books one at a time, and when she got to the new release he grabbed, her face lit up.
“Ooooh! Nice, I snagged my copy this morning. Can you believe we only got five copies in? I bet yours was the last one!”
Eduard knew the series wasn’t too popular, but it didn’t surprise him to hear he grabbed the last copy.
“Hah, that’s nice. My niece was really excited to read it. Can’t wait to bring it to her.” A blatant lie, but the cashier didn’t have to know.
Little did he know, there was someone else prowling the store, looking for that same book.

The gods did not favor Chise this day as the petite brunette was dashing through the streets as if the devil himself were licking her heels. She'd taken longer than she anticipated to finish a test and now she was trying to make it to the bookstore with a purpose. Her lungs ached and her calves were screaming at her but she finally, finally made it! There was no hesitation as she beelined it for the new release section and she looked around until she saw the title she'd been looking for. Yes! It's here!
..Only it wasn't. Her beam disappeared and she saw the space was already empty. "How?!" Perhaps she was louder than she anticipated but her heart was broken that she'd missed the new release of her favorite trilogy. She'd been waiting a year to find out how the story ends...and she missed it! She'd fallen asleep when she went to pre-order it online and had missed the deadline. M-maybe they had more out back! She wasted no time, she immediately went to the registers and flagged down the first cashier she saw...even though she was with a customer that didn't stop her. Chise certainly had a way about her when she was desperate.
"Sorry to interrupt but I need immediate assistance! I was hoping you could check to see if you had..a..series.." Her oceanic eyes caught sight of the book pile that the gentleman beside her had accumulated a pile of books that may impress others. No, what caught her attention was the book right on top. Immediately she looked up at the man...saw the school janitor?! "N-no way!! Please tell me you didn't snag the last one!" Her eyes were pleading, cheeks flushed from her race to get here from school. She turned to the cashier. "Please tell me you have more out back!"

EDUARD A. WINKLER Panacea academy, british columbia, canadA The girl showed up in an instant. Just when Eduard thought he was in the clear, a young lady in Panacea Academy’s uniform dashed up next to him, nearly barreling through him as she haggardly questioned the cashier. It was clear that she too, was looking for the book he’d grabbed the last of, and even more apparent that she had rushed to the store to get it. The cashier seemed to be somewhat taken aback as well, before she let out a small laugh.
“No sweetie, I’m sorry. We don’t keep new releases in the back.”
Eduard stiffened up, “Ah… yes. I got it for my niece...” Eduard knew that the girl was serious about the book though. He could see the look in her eyes and rigidity in her stance. It made him uneasy. What the hell? Was she going to jump him as he walked out? He couldn’t hit a young woman, even if she did decide to tackle him for a teen vampire book.
“Whelp! I gotta go now! I’ll see you around school, Miss.” Eduard stated, avoiding her eyes, “Better luck next time, eh?”
Eduard was unsure if he was being cruel or not, as this situation had never happened to him before. But he'd just beaten her to the chase! It wasn't his job to help her, right? RIGHT!?

As soon as the cashier advised that they did not in, fact, keep new releases out back Chise's heart broke. No way! It wasn't fair...She slumped on the counter looking totally defeated. She tried so hard to make it on time but with her part time job and today's late clean up she had missed the opportunity to get the one thing she really, really wanted. She was looking forward to it for WEEKS. She'd thought she had it all planned out but she wasn't quick enough...
Her blue gaze slid to the male, she wasn't sure his name but definitely saw him around campus, the janitor beating her to the punch?! No freakin' way. A new determination lit her eyes as she straightened and she invaded his space with her much shorter stance of only a mere 5'3". There was no way she was leaving empty handed...and sometimes you had to do what needed to be done.
"I will pay you double if you let me have that book, Mister." Was she haggling?! Absolutely she was. It wasn't fair she didn't have a car or that he got to end his shift on time. No way was Chise going to let him win this. She'd been waiting over a YEAR having eaten up this series since the beginning! She'd already collected this authors' previous two series and she was not going to leave this third series incomplete!
"I'm sure your niece will understand that this is a matter of life or death!" Okay, maybe that was exaggerating just a little bit but not really. Chise's escape from reality was with books and this series became so precious to her that she even blogged reviews! She HAD to get her hands on this book no matter what! "Name your price."

EDUARD A. WINKLER Panacea academy, british columbia, canadA The girl was relentless. She hadn’t even given Eduard a chance to escape, she’d practically had him cornered, and Eduard felt as though she were pressing closer and closer. The desperation had manifested itself on her face, it made Eduard somewhat uneasy. Had this girl really been that addicted to this silly series!?
Taking a step backward, Eduard was caught off guard by how such a small person could suddenly appear so tall to him just by cornering him and squaring up.
“Ah… my price?!” Eduard’s voice came out more strained than he’d intended. Why was he suddenly acting so shy? “No! It’s mine- my nieces. I- she has been waiting for so long, I can’t possibly let her down.”
He continued to back away from her, towards the doors of the bookstore. He glanced upwards at the cashier who looked back at him with a sympathetic smile. She knew. She knew that teenage fans were crazy. And yet she didn’t warn him? How could she have done this? Now look at him. Trapped by a normally sweet looking child gone rabid.
“Well I gotta go now, girl. See ya.”
He slipped past her and out the door.
YES! Freedom.

There was NO way she was going to be outwitted by this middle aged janitor! ( ok she didn't know h0w old he was but dammit! She was miffed!) He was making this much harder than it needed to be. She wasn't stupid despite what people may think. Chise was an avid reader, books were her escape from reality, when life really got low and this series hit her hard and she grew attached to this world and the characters in it. It wasn't fair that she had chores to finish up for class and he just got to head right out! The injustice!
As she cornered him further there was a fire in her blue gaze as she met his stare. The way he spoke made her narrow her eyes in suspicion. She invaded his personal space having no care that she was acting almost feral. "I'm begging you Mister. I NEED this book, you don't even know." She even tried to soften her expression, hands clasped together like a beggar.
That didn't work as he made his escape.
He wouldn't get far as she hurried after him. The door burst open as her figure skidded and she ran after him, finger pointing at him. "YOU CAN'T ESCAPE! I BET YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE A NIECE!"

EDUARD A. WINKLER Panacea academy, british columbia, canadA She was hot on his trail. Of course she was. Stuck to him like glue. Or like a high school girl seeing her school’s janitor taking the last copy of her newly released spicy vampire novel. Not that Eduard was scared of young girls or anything on a normal basis, but this one in particular was making him feel somewhat nervous. Why was she so desperate?! Why was she yelling?
“YOU CAN’T ESCAPE! I BET YOU DON’T EVEN HAVE A NIECE!”
YES! Yes he did so have a niece! What did this weird child know about him!? How was it weird that a man in 50s would have a niece!?!? Eduard felt so damn uneasy! Why did she play the cute act only to switch it up two seconds later with the unhinged lunatic immediately!? Is this the kind of students that attended the academy!?
“Yes! I do have a niece!”
But was the book for her? That was debatable. Maybe someday in the future the set would belong to her. But right now? It was his. And he wasn’t giving it up yet. Not without a fight!!
He whirled around the lot, gripping the book tightly in his arms and shot the student a glare.
“And back off! Do you normally chase people down when you can’t get what you want? What a strange habit…” He was still walking towards his truck, and once he got there, he ducked behind the side-view mirror, “Get back to the school now, girl!”

He may not understand her enthusiasm, but she was NOT going to let him get away! She'd saved for MONTHS and had been following this author since their debut! Chise was not going to let the last copy of the new book go to the hands of the janitor! Mind you she had nothing against the man, as he'd always seemed nice when she'd see him in school but this was a dog eat dog world when it came to new YA books meant specifically for her group type!
That is where she would do whatever it took. Books became an escape for her when life got too hard and she needed a break. Something she rarely got to give herself and this series immediately grabbed her heart that it was her immediate pick me up.
That being said she kept running after him. She may be short and not very athletic but she had will power! "Then how come SHE isn't getting it herself?!" Chise herself had overslept and forgot to pre-order like she normally did so she tried her best to get out of class early...but got stuck with after class clean up.
"Of course I don't but you're depriving me of my rights as a young adult woman!" How did that make sense? Well, it didn't but that wasn't the point. "School is over you dummy!"
She was so close now! But of course the fates were not in her favor as the tip of her shoe caught on a bump in the lot to prevent speeding and she went DOWN. The classic face to asphalt kind of fall that her phone and head phones fell out of her pocket.
The sudden silence was almost deafening that there was a moment of, 'what now?'

EDUARD A. WINKLER Panacea academy, british columbia, canadA The girl was a lioness after her prey. Weird prey being a 55-year old man with a handful of books though. But she just wouldn’t stop! He couldn’t get away!
“Then how come SHE isn’t getting it herself!?”
Eduard had no answer, but instead of getting inside of his car like a smart man would’ve, he ran around it, and of course the young woman’s voice continued following him.
“Of course I don’t, but you’re depriving me of my rights as a young adult woman! And school is over you dummy!”
Yeah? So what!? Almost all of the students lived at the school! It didn’t matter whether it was over or not, she needed to go back! Were there not curfews that needed to be followed? Was Panacea Academy losing all sense of the rules that needed to be obeyed!? Gah! Eduard made one more quick lap around the car before he was just about to climb inside. And of course… just as he was grabbing onto the handle and about to make his escape, he heard a meaty thump, and the sound of something clattering to the ground.
Never before had Eduard made such a loud groan. *Why should I care if the girl fell down? She nearly cornered me in the bookshop!* This time he was actually climbing into his car, and still not having seen the girl’s head pop up over the window, he plopped the books onto the seat next to him, minus the new release, and hopped out.
Hesitantly, he walked towards the girl, and knelt down, his knees screaming after all the running he’d just done.
“Hey girl. Are you okay?” Eduard asked, before he reached over and picked up the headphones she’d dropped, “Here, take your headphones.”
