One of the things that annoyed Mason about being in the gym at Panacea Academy was being told he was ‘too young’ to lift weights. Apparently, he was ‘still growing’ and if he lifted weights he might ‘hurt himself’ as he went through another growth spurt. Mason had to agree to that- he had seen older guys get hurt lifting weights and he knew that wasn’t always going to be the size he was now. That was it- he wanted to get bigger and stronger, because he knew he could take on guys a little bigger than him now and still win. So had no problem with the idea of getting bigger and wrestling bigger guys in the future. In fact, he wanted to get as big as a former college wrestler- turned MMA fighter that he admired. Mason would love to be as big as that guy! If he was able to get as big and buff as him, Mason just knew one day he could win a gold medal in wrestling at the Olympics (or Commonwealth Games) one day. That…would be aware- and he knew in his heart that it was a goal he could achieve. Already he was starting to show signs of getting bigger and leaner now days, with his chiselled wiry little body. It was also true that he was a little stronger than he looked for a kid his size. Of course he wasn’t the strongest boy in the Freshman class. There were a few much bigger and stronger than him. So how was he to stay in shape outside of wrestling practice? Mason found out that the only ways he could do that was his twice daily runs (if he didn’t have to study) or calisthenics in the gym. So here he was in the gym. Arriving at the gym that day, he took his time warming up by using the treadmill (that, he was at least allowed to use) and stretching out conscientiously. That much, Walther Menon seemed okay with him doing. He was Mason’s P.E teacher and he did everything he could to please him. Every P.E class he pushed himself to show him that even though he was the smallest kid in the class- he had a lot of heart. Being that there were few people in the gym that day, Mason was able to claim a small space of it to workout in. In front of a wall mirror, Mason practiced ‘shadow wrestling’ in front of it, watching himself drill different moves, to check he had his technique right. It looked kind of weird to some- like he was having a mental fit as he drilled shoulder throws, leg shoots, as well as sprawl defences against leg attacks. He did look a little odd- but there was no denying that he did it with explosive speed. In his mind he could see his opponent and visualize himself taking them to the mat in a match. His mind was totally focused on what he was doing, how he was going to do and how he would finish what he was doing. That was part of the reason he was so good at his sport- he prepared himself for what he needed to do. It was hard work what he was doing. He was starting to breath harder now and he could feel a little bit of sweat now, under his hooded sweatshirt top. That meant to him that he was working real hard. Driving himself onward, he used every ounce of his mental toughness. He had always been taught that he had to train harder than he thought his opponent might be. Mason had no idea who that might be, but he hoped that he was training harder than them. So intensely was he concentrating on this fact, that he hardly noticed that someone was watching him….

Russell was walking in the gym toward the exit after a short workout when he saw a fellow freshman in front of mirror. Maybe other people might not know what he was doing, but Russell had a big brain and knew exactly what he was doing. It was like shadow boxing except it was wrestling moves he was practicing. He was fast. Very fast. Russell couldn't help but smile at his speed. He looked rather intense. He was muscular too. Maybe not very large, but he was sufficiently muscled to look like a wrestler. He certainly wouldn't want to wrestle this kid, that was sure. He thought. it would be better watch him in a match, though. Then he would really see how good the guy was. But Russell wasn't going to get sweaty for tis guy. Oh no. He needed to stay smelling fresh. Well, fresh enough. Russell and this kid, what was his name?, just didn't get a long. Maybe it was his intensity. Maybe it was his class. Whatever it was, he wasn't Russell's sort. But he was interested in seeing him really wrestle someone. He just kept watching the kid do his moves. Then he coughed. He didn't mean to, it just came out unexpectedly. Damn. He thought. He didn't want the kid to know he was watching him. What would his reaction be? It was too late for him to just walk or run away. Mason Sato

As he moved about, Mason visualized the last opponent he faced in the wrestling mat. It had been a tough match that pushed him to his limits. Sure- he had won, but it hadn't been easy and without thoughts that he was going to lose the match. He remembered the way the guy moved, how he always waited for Mason to make the first move and how he used it to his own advantage. Each of them had put it all on the line to win and pushed the other to the outer limits of their abilities and fitness. In the end, it was one his favorite moves that he was good at, that ended the match in him pinning his opponent. Mason knew that now days he would be up against more experience and better wrestlers than him at high school level. That said, he was damned if he was going to make a poor showing his first year as a high school wrestler- so that was why he was training so hard. Russell was right though- Mason did look like a wrestler. He had muscles for a kid his age, that were toned and chiselled in all the right places. There was an intensity about him that seemed to make it feel as if he was seconds away from jumping on someone and wrestling to a pinning situation. It was like he was the alpha-male boy of the Freshman class, that was ready to challenge any other boy in his class and prove himself to any girl in his class that was looking for a potential boyfriend. Whereas most kids were a little wary of him (they hadn't got to know him) or contemptuous of him (like Russell), a couple of girls in the same class as Mason and Russell had made comments about how he was kind of hot. Not that Mason knew that opinion about him... It was true- Mason and Russell just didn't get along. From the first moment they encountered each other, Mason had felt his whole body bristle with inborn hostility. At first Mason thought he was just being overly sensitive- his guard naturally being up in a new school, around kids he didn't know. But slowly, it dawned on him that Russell was singularly arrogant. It was his attitude in class and towards other kids in their class. He was pretty sure he had heard him say some mean things to other kids. And there was the way he looked at other kids- that really got Mason's goat! A cough behind him- and close by, alerted to Mason that he had company. Straightening up out of his crouched wrestling stance, he turned in the direction of the cough. As his wiry muscled body relaxed as he stood up, it just as easily tensed up when he saw who it was. It was that jerk Russell. Mason wasn't one to hide his feelings and the scowl he gave Russell merely asserted his dislike of the guy. Was this guy stalking him to start a fight? It wasn't his intention to give the guy the satisfaction. Sure, he was pretty sure if he wrestled him he'd have him on his back pinned in four seconds. If he used his MMA grappling skills, he'd have him 'tapping out' in submission in a slightly longer time...he wanted the jerk to know he could dominate him any time, any where. But he wasn't going to let him play the victim- make him look like the bad guy because he rose to Russell's bait. "You want something...?" he asked as calmly as he could, without coming across as aggressive, even if his body language signalled he was not happy to see Russell.

Russell looked at the boy. He had to say something, anything. "You look pretty good." He said. Did he mean the boy was attractive or was he impressed with his wrestling skills? It was probably both. Russell likes to tell jokes. The problem is that he has a problem telling them. Well, he has a problem talking actually. He can set up the joke. He can deliver the punchline. But you don't always only laugh at the punchline. "After you were born and the doctor slapped you," Said Russell, setting up his joke. "I bet you put him in a Complete Nielsen."As much as Russell might want to challenge the kid to a wrestling match, he wanted to watch him in action. He had to try to get someone to wrestle him before he did, so he could learn how he wrestled. He had a little idea watching him shadow wrestle. But he was fast, much faster than Rusell. And Russell hated losing. Especially to a barbarian such as the kid in front of him. Yes, he had to see him in another match with someone else. He always watched students playing pool in the common room before he played them. That way he knew how good they were and which one was better than the other. Mason Sato

"You look pretty good' Russell said to Mason. Mason had no idea if Russell was being honest and paying him a compliment- or whether he was needling him to get a raise out of him. It was no secret that he would trust Russell to give a canary a bath, let alone be civil to him. Because let's face it- they didn't like each other at all. Then again, maybe Russell was being civil to him and Mason was reading something that wasn't there in what he said to him. Last thing he wanted was to give Russell more ammunition to paint him as a jerk. "Thanks..." he said evenly, bouncing on the balls of his feet, partly to calm his explosive energy and partly to keep himself warm as he stood there 'talking' to Russell. There was no reason at all for him to at least try and be civil to the kid he thought of as a jerk. Now, let it not be said that Mason didn't have a sense of humor. Mason liked a good well thought-out joke as much as any kid his age- despite his usually dour countenance that he showed to the world. But what Russell thought was a humorous joke, fell flat with him and came across as a snide comment. Especially about the assertion that the doctor slapped him when he was born. The nerve of this jerk! However, Mason was determined not to raise to the bait offered by Russell. Question was, how long could be stand it before he hauled off on the jerk and taught him a lesson. His body language visibly took on a more tense nature as he thought about how he should respond, let alone answer what was said to him. What was more galling, was that he had no idea what Russell meant by a 'Complete Nielsen'. Obviously it was so kind of wrestling move- no doubt Russell had it in his mind that Mason did something like the 'pro-wrestling' that was inflicted on the minds of people when they thought of Mason's sport. Maybe he was trying to indicate to him, that he thought he was stupid. "Maybe..." he answered Russell's joke evenly. It was the least he could do. If he said more, he might have made a suggestion to Russell that he did something that was anatomically impossible for him. Had he knew what Russell was thinking about, Mason would have been grudgingly impressed by what he was doing. At this stage in his sporting career, he was yet to scout out his opponents against whom he might going up against this year. There was plenty of stuff out there that he could use to do so. All he needed to do was research the tournaments from last year, that he would be taking part in this year. Then he would know who he might be going up against in his age and weight classes. From there he could pick out who he thought he might be going up against and seek them out on social media. Once he watched a few of their matches on Youtube, he would have an idea where their strengths and weaknesses were, what they did well and what their favorite moves were. From there he could direct his training to counter these strengths and exploiting the weakness, whilst develop his own tactics to win against these opponents...or to make sure he wasn't too easy to beat. Russell didn't know that he had gotten the wrestling move wrong. When you're born, the doctor slaps you to make you cry, making you breathe. Russell meant that when the doctor slapped Mason, he put the doctor in a full nelson. He was close, but unfortunately not close enough for Mason to know what he was talking about to get the punchline of the joke. Which was Russell's number one problem with telling jokes. No one knew what he was talking about to even get the punchline. While the two boys were glaring at each other much like fighters before their fight, another boy came by. Daven was working out in another part of the gym. Russell offered Daven twenty dollars to wrestle Mason. Daven demanded a hundred dollars. Mason tried to negotiate with Daven, bringing his offer up to fifty dollars. Daven suggested that Russell wrestle Mason himself then. Russell relented to the hundred dollars. Daven saw just how dedicated to the sport Mason was. If he was going to get a hundred dollars to wrestle Mason, Daven thought he should know about it afterward. And what better way to learn about it than get half of the money? Daven was also on the Giving Chances and it was found money, Russell wanted to see just how good Mason was and he was impressed that other wrestlers were just as wary of wrestling him as Russell was. Daven was a sophomore and was on the wrestling team for a year. While Russell was muscular and liked to wrestle, he wasn't on the team. Never was on any wrestling team. "Hey Mason," Daven said. "You want to spar for a little bit?" Russell smiled Daven's timing was perfect. This was exactly what Russell wanted. Mason Sato

Not trusting Russell in general or as far as he could throw him, Mason kept a close watch on him. As much as hated to admit it, Russell was way smarter than him and probably had the skill of getting inside his head and driving him nuts. He could make play him like a harp from Hell and dance to his tune. It would be so easy for him to manipulate him into doing something that would get him into trouble and then sit back and laugh at Mason while he suffered for it.
Daven was not a stranger to Mason. He had noticed him the first time he came into the gym ever to work out. It was like he had some kind of radar that detected a fellow wrestler in Daven and that he was 'kindred' soul- even though they never actually spoke as far as Mason knew. He knew that Daven was a Sophomore, and they he was informed, enjoyed nothing more than tormenting Freshman...until they came back as Sophomores the following year. Then it was all different- he hoped. What he noticed also about Daven, was that he was around the same height as him, only more muscular in the shoulders and upper chest. It made him jealous that Daven could come into the gym and pump out Bench Presses, do Squats, as well as use free-weights to his heart's content. And what was Mason able to use? The Pull Up bars and the weights bench for Bench Dips. Mason was pretty sure he could do a lot more than that. But no...he was 'too young' to be using most of gym equipment.
Out of nowhere Daven asked him if he wanted to spar- not surprizing consider what the two boys did as a sport. Mason was pretty sure that Russell didn't wrestle- or not in the way he did it. Also he was pretty sure that Russell didn't know he did MMA. But if he did...was this his way of getting into his head and trying to get into a fight with him by making him think they were just going to 'spar'? Then he would use dirty tactics to put the beatdown on Mason. That would suck...because he knew he could take Russell to the floor and make him 'tap out' in 20 seconds easily. Russell seemed to have the same build as him- maybe that was why he felt so threatened by Mason, but Mason knew he had the skill and the aggression to his advantage. "Okay...sure. Where?" Mason said to Daven. He was pretty sure they wouldn't be doing it there in the gym on the hard floor.

The only place for the wrestling match was in the wrestling room. He knew he could get mats to put on the floor in the gym, but they would come from the wrestling room. So why not just wrestle there? "The only place that makes sense is the wrestling room." Daven said. He thought Russell was a friend of Mason's. Why else would Mason watch him as he worked out? Of course, now Russell had a problem. How would he get into the room where it happened? Daven and Mason could easily go into the room, stay in there for a while, and come out saying one of them won the match when they might not have wrestled at all and Russell would still have to pay Daven for a wrestling match he didn't see. Russell had to find a way into that room! "Hey, I bet you twenty dollars Daven beats you." Russell said. "Wait." Daven said in protest. "What?" He gave Russell a concerned look. Russell smiled mischievously. He knew how a bet changed the way a game of pool was played. He could only imagine how more intense Mason would wrestle Daven with money running against him. He walked up to Daven and whispered in his ear. "You shouldn't have been so greedy." At least, the bet let him see the match. If Mason accepted. But how could he not? The boy seemed to like to wrestle. He didn't seem to Russell to be the type to decline any offer for a match, no matter who challenged him. And he certainly didn't seem the type to question his skills. No, Russell felt that Mason had to accept the bet and Russell would successfully buy his way into see the match and be able to see just how good the intense kid was on the mat. And Daven deserved whatever Mason decided to do to him demanding a hundred dollars from Russell to wrestle Mason. It was a win-win really. Even if Daven lost, which he was bound to do. Daven was a sophomore and a year older than Mason. He had a year's experience on the wrestling team, so he must have wrestled many different wrestlers with different styles. He could have the skill to beat Mason, but somehow, Russell doubted it. And as Daven's protestations proved, silent as they were, Daven doubted he would win as well. No, Mason was going to give a clinic with Daven as his victim and Russell was privileged to watch it. Russell couldn't wait. Mason Sato

He couldn't prove it and it might make him look like he was crazy, but Mason was pretty sure that Russell was plotting on him. What- he wasn't sure. But he did have a feeling he couldn't trust that weasel as far as he could throw him. What was he planning with this Daven guy? He eyed them warily in case there was a sign of some kind of skulduggery being cooked up.
"That sounds good to me" Mason agreed when he heard where they might wrestle. Seemed the obvious place to do it. No one would disturb them (possibly) and it gave him a chance to hit the mat and do his thing after what seemed like a ling time. His last tournament had been over the summer and he was itching to get to grips with an opponent again- even an unknown one like Daven. It would be today- Daven had said he wanted to spar. So it wouldn't be tomorrow or some time later, which would mean a formal wrestling match with him ad Daven wearing actual wrestling singlets. He knew it would be a while until he was allowed off campus to compete in tournaments again, or attend weekend training camps.
It was then that heard what Russell said about a bet. Mason did not like that. It sounded as if Russell was luring him into a set-up to screw him over. Needless to say he glared back at Russell in disgust.

Russell noticed Mason's look at him and thought it was just because he made the bet. It was completely necessary. He didn't trust either Mason or Daven. They were on the same wrestling team, they could easily talk things over and make some kind of scheme. Russell watched a lot of mysteries and psychological thrillers and movies with all kinds of twists at the end of them. Films like The Wicker Man -- he liked the original far greater than the remake -- Sleuth, Absolution, and many others where one person cons another. Russell wouldn't put it pass them to plan having Daven "accidentally" killing Mason only to blackmail him about it afterward. Even if it was a mere Halloween joke. Something was definitely going on. He would just have to keep a closer eye on their wrestling match. Russell didn't really understand the look he gave him. it was a simple bet of only twenty dollars. Junk change. If he wanted to make a look at him, let Daven tell him that Russell gave him a hundred dollars for proposing they wrestle in the first place. He looked at Mason as they walked to the wrestling room. "Daven's obviously the underdog." Russell said. "I mean he doesn't even think he has a chance. Why are you giving me that look?" Mason Sato

Mason and Daven were on the same wrestling team. So far Mason had only seen him wrestle in practice matches- not ones where placements were on the line as in actual tournaments. In his own case, he had no idea if Daven had scouted him out online to see what type of record he had. Would take much to Google him in the right way or to look for video clips on Youtube to come up with what Daven would need to know- or Russell for that matter. Daven obviously the underdog? Right- and flying monkeys would fly out of Mason's butt! Mason could tell if some guy had skills. It was in the way he moved and the way he held himself when he walked- and Daven certainly looked like he could back what he was bringing to the mat. It a given that in practice or when the team was at a meet, he and Daven were unlikely to be competing against each other. But an open tournament...? Yeah...he could see them going head to head. As uneasy as that made him a little- he looked forward to the idea. Russell asked him a question- so Mason gave him an answer even if he didn't like it. "I don't trust you as far as I could throw you" he said simply. Oh yeah...he would love to drag this jerk out onto the mat some time and see exactly how far he could throw him... Following Daven he felt confident about how he would go. Even if lost, he was pretty sure the older kid wouldn't be so quick to tangle with him again. Being already warmed up, he was ready to go as soon as they got there.

Walking to the wrestling room with Mason was weird, Russell felt. Neither of them trusted the other enough to allow him to fall behind him too long. So they uncomfortably walked side by side, even giving a few feet of space between them. The wrestling room, Russell found, was just a room filled with mats on the floor. It was big enough for maybe two pairs of people to wrestle comfortably. without one pair moving into the other pair while wrestling. There wasn't any place for Russell to sit. No stands or anything. He would have to sit on the matted floor, a fact he disliked intensely. Mason could kick him if he was seated on the floor. Russell stood with his back toward the wall and watched the two wrestlers. He was curious what they would do. Warm up? Just go at it? Maybe even attack Mason? That was why he wasn't seated yet. The distrust in that room was thick as fog. Mason Sato

Walking alongside Russell was weird for Mason too. He didn't trust the guy to backstab or screw him over if given the opportunity. Their dislike for each other was always obvious and overbearing in nature. Still, if Russell tried anything underhanded, Mason knew he would take Russell to the floor real easy. Maybe that was what he was hoping would happen- Russell would try something and he could teach him a lesson. Oh yeah...Mason wanted to kick Russell's ass and that him down a peg or two and that smug arrogant look off his face. The wrestling room once they got there, was as he first remembered it. He could almost smell the sweat of countless other boys who had wrestled for Panacea Academy, like he was going to do. This was like a church to him, where he would 'pray' at the alter of his sport. There would be a lot of sacrifice in that room- working out until he could hardly move, sweating away the last few ounces of fat (if he still had it) to make weight and walk out of there all beat up and bruised from an intense practice match. Mason and Daven knew what they were doing. Whilst Russell stood with his back to the wall, the two teenage gladiators stripped off their sweat tops down to the t-shirts before shaking out their muscles before the match. Each moved to the center of the match and by slapping hands, observed at least the courtesy of sportsmanship. The two of them dropped down into their wrestling stances and circled each other of a moment, before Mason shot in low on Daven for a Double Leg Takedown- a move that took Daven off his feet and half way across the mat. The two wrestlers then delved into a writhing mass of arms, legs and muscles that pulsated on the mat as Mason tried to pin Daven and Daven tried to escape from Mason's hold.

Russell watched the boys anxious to see what would happen. How badly would Mason beat up Daven and would Daven be able to do well against Mason even if he was on the wrestling team for a year? At first, it seemed like a regular match, but then Mason attacked Daven and Russell couldn't help but gasp. Mason seemed to have thrown Daven across the mat. That was crazy! And Russell couldn't help but close his eyes for a little from imagining the pain Daven must've felt hitting the mat from being lifted up so high. Mason was definitely an intense wrestler and giving it his all. He really hoped that Daven didn't wind up int he hospital or something. What if something happened and Daven complained that Russell had offered him money to wrestle Mason only to get really badly hurt? Should Russell stop the match? No, they knew what they were doing. Russell decided and they knew what to expect. Also they were probably just making it look good for him. They were on the same team. They might've rehearsed this whole thing. But Daven did look hurt a little when he came down. Thought Russell. Well, at least he didn't have to face Mason on the mat. Wow! The kid was a smegging animal on the mat! Thought Russell. Mason Sato

Daven wasn't going down easily and Mason wasn't holding back trying to pin Daven. Both were struggling like crazy to do what they needed to do- Mason to wrestle Daven into a pin position and Daven to escape from Mason and reverse the situation they were in. Both of the teenage gladiators had lean hard muscles the bulged and pulsated under their t-shirts. Neither Mason or Daven was holding back. Eventually Daven did manage to break away from Mason and get to his feet. The two of them watched each other carefully. Daven knew that Mason still being flat on the mat in front on him, could go for his legs easily again. Mason knew that Daven could be on his back in an instant if he wanted to.
Carefully they eyed each other as Mason carefully moved to his feet, eyeing each other as he did so. They locked up with each other after a second and both seemed to be trying to push the other around for a moment. Then Daven suddenly ducked under Mason's arms and went for his legs. Instinctively Mason sprawled upon Daven- throwing his legs far behind him and dropping his weight on Daven's neck and shoulders. Pivoting his hips side-to-side violently, Mason fought to drop his hips in and away from Daven as much as Daven was trying to pull Mason's legs into his chest. Mason fought too. He fought to underhook his arm down and deep under Daven's armpit, to get the leverage to turn Daven to his back and pin him. His face was a mask of aggression that travelled to his eyes as his little body pulsated and bulged with exertion. He was showing to daven- but mostly to Russell, what a total warrior he was...
