May has recently been introduced to the gothic aesthetic, so her wardrobe is very likely going to update as her school life goes on.
[break]
May’s hair takes a soot black hue and is usually tied up in a ponytail, either held with a bright orange scrunchie or a crossed chopsticks hair tie. For formal events she might opt for a bun instead, though she dislikes how it makes her look older.
[break]eye color
[break]
May’s eyes are a set of bright and reflective amber irises, housed in almond shaped eyes.
[break]height
[break]
May’s toward the lower end of the height range for her age, just barely reaching 5’0”.
[break]body type
[break]
May’s petite but slightly muscular, such that her muscles are largely invisible unless she’s flexing them. She has a triangular build, so her hips are a little more defined than the rest of her body.
[break]clothing style
[break]
May nearly always wears black, even when it’s hot out. Most of her outfits have either white or gold accents, or both, and the designs usually depict flowers or dragons. Most of her wardrobe is modern and westernised with its T-shirts, sweaters and jeans. She does own a couple of traditional cheongsam and hanfu dresses though, and actually prefers to wear these purely because she feels cute in them.
[break][break]
Her footwear of choice seems to be knee-length boots, though she does own sandals if she ever needs to coordinate the traditional look.
[break][break]
May always carries a paper fan in an inner pocket if her ensemble happens to have one. The paper is black, the frame is gold, and its primary purpose seems to be swatting flies rather than keeping her cool.

personality
[break]
[attr="class","personality-points"]
- SPITEFUL: May has a very vengeful and judgmental personality. While she isn’t exactly petty enough to hold grudges for minor transgressions against her, she will definitely treat people coldly if they intentionally make her or her elder sister’s lives difficult, or if they litter, as that’s one of her biggest pet peeves. Once a person has left her good books, that bridge has been burned, most likely for good.
- COMPETITIVE: May wants to be the best at everything she does, so when she discovers someone sharing a passion with her the first thing she’ll do is challenge them. She doesn’t take losing very well, so she might get a little grumpy. Expect regular rematches.
- NITPICKY: May is absolutely the type of person to prattle on about the things she didn’t like about the most recent movie she watched. She might not even have enough time to get to the parts she actually did enjoy. Her mindset is very critical, even towards herself.
- SLOW: May is very unfamiliar with social cues. She doesn’t always get jokes, and she tends to take everything she hears literally. She’s not very good at idioms. She can sometimes pick out sarcasm, but always overexaggerates when she tries to employ it herself.
- SASSY: May isn’t exactly the most polite little girl, even if she means well. Contrary to Valerie’s cheesy humour, May makes witty jabs at others for amusement. The teasing is usually quite light, but she definitely has the potential to get carried away and take things too far.
- GULLIBLE: May’s inexperience with the area’s culture has blinded her from people’s lies and tricks. She’s easy to prank, and she’ll believe any conspiracy theory you tell her. She’s become highly superstitious since coming to Canada and hearing the new family tell ghost stories.
- DEPENDABLE: May’s very protective of her friends, and gladly volunteers for tasks that they are otherwise unable to do. She’s the kind of little lady to go up to the counter at a fast food place to let the staff know that her friend asked for no pickles. She’ll gladly lend her time to help others get through their battles, figurative or literal.
- BRAVE: Aside from initiating phone calls, and being labelled as a nerd, May isn’t scared of very much. She’s fairly confident she can defend herself pretty well, and is perfectly okay with stimuli like needles and tight spaces. She doesn’t particularly like bugs, but she is quite adept at swatting them down if they continue to pester her. She is not immune to being startled by other people, though.
- PATIENT: Even though May collects grudges like they’re Pokemon cards, she rarely acts aggressively on them and instead treats them with coldness. You’ll know if you’ve wronged her, but she won’t cause you any trouble. She is very patient and calm, and believes that any karma or justice those people deserve isn’t hers to mete out. Her patience does have a limit, but it’s a lot higher than for most people of her age.
- DILIGENT: May always stays on top of her chores, and even finds the time to practice tai chi every morning. She’s very hard-working in class too, even if her grades aren’t always stellar. She has a tenacious attitude towards challenging herself that others can’t help but admire.
- FRUGAL: Since her recent family situation, May has become very money-conscious. She’ll treat herself every once in a while, but for the most part she’ll only spend what she has to to get by. She’ll jump at any opportunity for a discount she can find. She doesn’t want to impose too much on her foster parents.
- ALTRUISTIC: Aside from occasionally opening the door for people, May is a very environmentally-minded individual who cares a ton about the planet she lives on. While material possessions aren’t exactly something the girl feels comfortable donating to the cause, time and effort are. She promotes recycling, and she is very eager to jump on charity initiatives.
[break]hobbies
[break]
[attr="class","hobby-list"]
- KUNG FU: May practices tai chi and yoga, which benefits her health and strength, both mental and physical. While she doesn’t train in any specific combat arts, she does enjoy kung fu movies, and she tries to mimic and practice techniques she sees in those productions. These endeavours have varying levels of success and real-world practicality.
- BASEBALL: Upon hearing that she’d be moving to North America, the first thing May ever wanted to try was baseball. She has little experience in actually playing it, but she’s watched it enough times to understand the tactics behind the sport. In spite of her small size, she has a pretty good pitching arm. Even without having played ball very much, her physical aptitude was enough to get her through tryouts.
- GAMING: May often plays video games with her elder sister Valerie, but her inclination seems to be towards fighter games and high action platformers. The sisters often have to take turns to decide what they end up playing together. She also loves Pokemon, and her favourite is Grafaiai.
- COOKING: May wants to bring the gift of her birth parents’ authentic Chinese cuisine to Panacea academy. Sadly since she’s only fourteen, she has been banned (by her parents) from using the stove, at least without being attended by one of the more senior students (Valerie doesn’t count, apparently). Her favourite thing to cook is wontons. May also likes to watch cooking shows.
- FASHION: May is about to enter a goth phase, at least when it comes to fashion, but even before this she has been following traditional Chinese fashion quite closely. At the beginning of her life at Panacea she can only afford to window shop, but this is definitely where her savings are going once she’s accumulated enough through her allowance. She likes looking at cute and poofy dresses, and getting Valerie to take photos of her in them.
- ASTRONOMY: May isn’t exactly a space nerd, but she feels quite comfortable in the observatory. She knows a few constellations, but is usually just there to stargaze. She’ll occasionally watch rocket launches on TV, and she follows a bunch of space feeds on her social media. Okay so maybe she is a space nerd. She has a vague interest in science fiction novels that have an interstellar setting, though in most cases she’d rather just watch the movie. She also enjoys building model starships, though she can rarely justify the cost of some sets. May is a little embarrassed about this interest, and will only share it with close friends.

[break]biography
[break]
Several years before Yang Meimei was even born, her father, Yang Zhong, was an overseas student at Panacea Academy himself. During his stay he had met an invaluable friend, one so trustworthy that he’d one day come to trust his own daughter’s future to them. Of course, he did not know that at the time, and how could he? The Yang family’s life had been pretty smooth sailing for years.
[break][break]
Soon after his time at the academy, Zhong landed a stable job in his hometown back in Hefei, China. He met a wonderful lady and together they had Meimei, their one and only daughter. For 12 years they continued their life there, undeterred by life’s worries and challenges.
[break][break]
May herself proved to be a pretty hardworking child, especially when it came to school. Some of the other kids didn’t like that though, and surely enough she became the subject of bullying because of her drive and aptitude for good grades. At this point she decided to toughen up, even if purely out of spite. Coming from a family of Taoists, she didn’t believe in exacting revenge so much as she did in focusing her energies more constructively. After studying the way of Tao, she became a lot more zen. Her lack of reaction deprived the bullies of their entertainment, and they eventually left her alone.
[break][break]
Zhong never really drifted apart from his old friend, Mr. Vermont, and would even be on the occasional phonecall for hours on end. They even got their daughters in contact, so May and Valerie effectively became penpals… phonepals? Either way they loved talking to each other about this and that. The girls effectively taught each other snippets of Chinese and English.
[break][break]
Shortly before May turned 12, her father landed a job in Canada so the families could be closer together. They moved over and for the first time the two girls got to meet in person! Oh and May got to meet Valerie’s little sister Sherry too, although she had her own group of friends and wasn’t so interested in hanging out with the young teenagers.
[break][break]
Misfortune hit the Yang family a few months later, when a workplace injury to his hand rendered Zhong unable to do his job. He had to be let go, with some compensation, but not enough to support a family of three without finding new employment. He is currently having difficulty looking for a new job in his field that he is capable of doing even with this new disability. The stress of it all isn’t doing so well on his health either, causing him to be more irritable than usual. He did not want this to be the sort of family environment for May to grow up in.
[break][break]
This led to having the Vermont family look after little Meimei while her birth family could financially recover. May was mostly excited she’d get to hang with Valerie for all that time, but she’d still occasionally check in with the Yang folks to check in on them. Legally, May is now a foster child on a temporary basis until either of her birth parents find stable income again.
