Loosing my legs is the only way I'll stop playing

Post by Conor McCluskey on Aug 29, 2024 17:28:32 GMT -7
Sweat bounced off Conor's face as another lap was finished around the track field. The cool morning air trying it's best to keep him cool. Early in the morning, nothing beat a good run. At least in Conor's mind. As it allowed his muscles to stretch from a long night of sleep. Plus the man needed to always be moving or else he would go stir crazy. After all basketball was starting up again. So he needed to keep his stamina up. Being on the baseball field was great, and he loved the sport. But there is too much downtown. Where at least basketball was constant movement.
He finished another lap as his mind started to wander. Thinking about what type of team they would assemble this year. With him at point guard the options were pretty limitless. As his smarts for the game were off the charts. Plus despite having to wear glasses, his vision for the game was particularly great. He may not be the most talented on the team. But man could he outsmart his opponents. If only he could translate that into his studies.
As on his sixth lap he was coming onto a familiar figure. Burgundy hair swayed in the wind as it seemed like she was also out in the early morning to get some running in. He has seen her before on many occasion, on the field. Never has talked to her or even knows her name. Just her face and the way she runs. Which was beautiful. Pretty much perfect form. As he did pass her yet another time. He did wonder if she was going easy today, as he did glance behind him to see if she was okay.
Conor was only going around 70% was that enough to out run her? Or was she just getting in some exercise? But to have almost perfect form while running is a rare thing. So she had do a sport right? Thoughts just rumbling in his head. As he went back to looking straight as it wasn't like him to judge others. So he just went back to focusing on himself. | I will always Run before I walk

[attr="class","dilyrics"]But while I am lying here, trying to fight the tears I'll prove to the crowd that i come out stronger
though i think i might[attr="class","dilyric"]lie here a little longer | [attr="class","dibody"]Adara was still in an early morning haze as she headed down to the track, a yawn escaping her mouth while her arms stretched out in front of her. Sleep was still heavy in her eyes, but she started to warm up regardless, stretching her body in a routine that she had clearly done many times. The air was nice and cool, and as she started running her warm-up laps it gradually started to wake her up.
School was finally back in session, which meant that track meets were just around the corner! Adara was so excited to finally get back on the field for real rather than racing against her team-mates or occasionally meeting with people from other schools. She was looking forward to a race that meant more than just bragging rights. Another medal for her bunk or a trophy in the school's case. She was itching for it to mean something. Last season was pretty disappointing. Adara scored some winning finishes, and on her own she did quite good. However, the relays she competed in were severely lacking. Her main goal for this year was to put together a winning team, or die trying. "I wonder how this years crop of freshmen turned out.... or maybe I can bully Val into trying it out again...." The thought danced through her brain before leaving swiftly. It was time to dig in and focus, she needed to start taking her conditioning really seriously if she was going to be ready soon. At the thought, a small smile spread across her face, and her body fully shook off the sleep from the night before. Just as she started to pick up some pace a boy came fast from behind. He passed her quickly, a shock of wild brown hair that then turned back to look at her. Was that.... a smirk? She certainly knew of him, hell he was in damn near every sport at school, and had seen him occasionally around training. Adara had never heard of him being the infuriating type, but there's no mistaking that was some kind of challenge.
Adara's brow furrowed, and she broke into a near full sprint. She was going to pass him no matter what, and she was going to STAY ahead the whole rest of their time on the track. She dug in, and within a few seconds had fully closed the gap. Her heart pounded in her ears as she got about shoulder to shoulder with him. Her leg extended to hit the ground.... and missed. Adara let out a sound that was akin to a welp as she fully fell over, and took the boy with her.
She managed to save her ankles, but she ended up hitting with a hard thud. "Ooooow.... oh, geeez." God this was so embarrassing, Adara's face was fully flushed red. "Ah.... I'm sorry, are you okay?"

Focusing on his breathing as he has already been out here for a while. Not that getting tired would stop him. He is a freak of nature with what felt like and endless pit of energy. But in order to not get benched during the season he has to pace himself. And for Conor that was hard. Especially after baseball season. Where bursts of energy were used at 100%. Basketball was controlled, calculated in the way of using energy. Especially for him being the point guard who touched the ball probably the most to set up plays for everyone else. So his minimum for today was around eight. A couple days later nine. Until he could get to ten without being winded. His stamina truly was freakish.
Conor's shaggy brown hair flowing as he rounded the long corner when he hears the sound of someone catching up to him. As he glanced back to see the girl in a full sprint. A moment early she was far behind. Now she was right on his ass. As he got a glimpse of her face. Was she angry?? Do people usually look angry when running? Like she was trying to pass him? Or was she imagining she was in a competition? Like how boxers would shadow box. Training her mind. Though it was kinda scary how truly fast she was as she had caught up with him.
He glanced over at her as she was now shoulder to shoulder coming out of the rounded corner. As he looked over at her just as she misses her footing and started to fall. Her arms outstretch. As she pretty much tackles him into the ground. Instinct took over for the brown haired boy. As he instantly wrapped his arms around her. Like the multiple times his sister fell into him. Protecting her first.
As they slammed on the rubbery track. His back slamming into the ground. As he just winces in pain. As not only his body weight but hers landed fully in the ground. "Ow." Was all he could say as his arms fell right to his side as he just stared up at the girl. "Yea yea. I'm good. But your knee is kinda digging into my gut." He chuckled out. As his glasses were skewed diagonal on his face. Not even trying to fix them yet. As he just looked at the girl that was now on top of him. Into her crimson eyes. As he just couldn't hold it in much more as he just started to laugh so hard. If anyone saw them. It probably looked like something right out of movie or something. | I will always Run before I walk

though i think i might[attr="class","dilyric"]lie here a little longer
| [attr="class","dibody"]Adara's ears burned as she stared down at the boy she had fully just tackled, her face a bright shade of red. This was NOT the start to the morning she was hoping for. Luckily, she wasn't injured, although that was all thanks to the boy underneath her. His hair was even messier than before, and his glasses were all askew, nearly off his face. As he let out an exclamation of pain, she winced, guilt hitting her like a garbage truck. She relaxed a little when he spoke for real, although she jumped at the mention of her knee in his gut. "Oh-uh, yeah. Sorry, haha" She said, an awkward chuckle coming out of her mouth.
He started to laugh, and that made Adara relax a little more. His laugh was nice, and it set her at ease. The situation was pretty funny. It was the kind of stuff that she thought only happened in books and TV, especially since it was such a ridiculous situation. Adara shifted position and rolled off to the side, ending up sitting with her legs stretched out in front of her. As he continued to cackle, she started to laugh as well. At first awkwardly, but then she burst into a full fit. Her laugh was anything but delicate—loud and unabashed, it came out in a series of snorts and wheezes, the kind that made her eyes water and her sides ache. It wasn't the kind of laughter anyone would expect by looking at her, but she had long given up on trying to change it.
The laughter fit lasted for longer than she would've liked, and eventually, she had to take some deep shaky breaths to calm herself down. Her arms were holding her sides, and tears pricked the corner of her eyes. A wide smile spread across her face, the momentary rivalry was forgotten, at least for now. "Thanks for breaking the fall, that could've been reaaally messy," another small laugh, though the thought of her getting an injury from such a careless mistake was frightening. Not only because the start of the season was just around the bend, but also because it was such a stupid thing to get fired up over. "I-uh, took you passing me as a personal challenge.... I guess I got a little carried away. Are you sure you're okay?"
A little carried away was an understatement, at the time the girl was literally seeing red. He didn't need to know that though. "I'm Adara, by the way." |

Luckily other than the pain his gut from her knee. It seemed like nothing else was hurt too bad. His shoulder blades and back might hurt the rest of the day. But that was the price he was willing to pay for saving the track and field star. It was Conor after all, he knew of most people that played a sport. Especially the ones who were super good. He always did want to talk to her about running. As maybe some pointers could help him in basketball. But he never could. One cause he was too busy with practice, and two despite all of his confidence he still has trouble talking to really cute girls. Nothing bad but the dude is just a buffoon and acts an idiot in from of them.
As she rolled off of him and just sat there legs outstretched. As he just looked over to her right as she started to laugh really hard along with him. Even though after a bit he was just laughing at her laughing. How can someone that looks like her have such a great laugh. Conor loved it. The man respects people more when they are just themselves and not hiding anything. And with her laugh? He knew she was a genuine person.
He finally sat up himself after the laughing started to subside. Fixing his glasses as he then just rested his arms on his bent knees. "Conor" was all he responded to her saying her name. "And don't worry about it. totally fine" he said raising his hand and in a waving motion back in forth. Really hammering home that it was no big deal. Things happen sometime.
"I mean if you wanted to race all you had to do was yell. I would have gladly picked up my pace." he responded to her a bit cheekily. Implying he wasn't going full out in the first place.
But before she could respond to that. He looked at his breath that was being turned into mist from the cool morning air. As he looked back at her. "But seriously you are soooo freakin fast. I had no idea you had caught up until you know, you full tilt tackled me." he chuckled. As he was also teasing her and complimenting her at the same time somehow. He is special like that. Years of practice with his younger siblings. Able to throw out disses and compliments in the same breath.
"You really are amazing." his voice so innocent and full of excitement. Like I said he is stupid and doesn't know how to talk to girls that well. Nor know how to just act chill. As his eyes almost had a spark to them as he got to see how fast she really was up close. | I will always Run before I walk

Notes: Wanna make it a dice roll?
| [attr="class","dibody"]Adara smiled, then let out a breath of relief when he said he was just fine. The last thing she would've wanted was to interfere with his own upcoming season. She knew he was in other sports, filling pretty much the whole year with them, so he definitely didn't have a lot of room for injury. Word on the street was that he was pretty damn good too. She wondered if she could convince him to make time for some track meets.... even one or two couldn't hurt.... right? Adara pondered on it for a second before shaking the thought off, he was busy enough as it was!
Her eyebrows raised slightly at his comment about picking up his pace, then her face quickly smoothed over. That wasn't close to full tilt? "Man.... he really is no joke... the real thing for sure." It made a small fire light up inside her. She wanted to race him for real, just to see. Conor probably had an edge up on her since he was a guy, but she's trained to sprint specifically for years. It could end up being a toss-up. That got her a little excited, but she snapped back to focus as he kept talking.
Adara laughed at his playful teasing, another loud guffaw that burst into the air like a gunshot. "Well, you know I was thinking of trying out for rugby, so I thought you might be a good practice target. I think I'm going to stick to sprinting though." She shot back playfully, a cocky smile spread across her face. The girl leaned back, resting her body on the palms of her hands. She had been going pretty fast. Honestly, the speed that Adara was going might have mirrored her personal 100m best. There wasn't quite anything like pure spite to motivate the spirit.
The innocence in Conor's voice when he called Adara amazing made the girl feel at ease, and it felt like she was talking to someone she'd known for a long time. "I know, but thank you!" She said with a wink, although she couldn't hide the small flush of red that hit her face. Adara wasn't used to people complimenting her so earnestly.
She stood, offering out a hand to help him up. "Hey, why don't we race for real? I can give you some pointers!" She pauses for a second, a slight hum coming from her lips, "and how about we make it a bet or something, hm? Loser has to buy breakfast."
A big grin spreads over her face, "though don't expect me to go easy on you!" |

Conor chuckled as she spoke. "Luckily for you, I am built like a rock." he jokingly said back as he knocked on his head. "Plus there is nothing up there too so double lucky." he chuckled. Knowing full well that he was not the smartest light bulb in the shed. Nor did he try to hide it. He was dumb innocent jock. That the gods gifted him with just an abundant amount of natural talent. But they did put all of his stats into physical instead of smarts.
He sighed to himself as he was on such a good pace going almost full energy. Baseball did come in handy to pace yourself when you on the field running down ground balls. But man was his stamina was in need of some work for coming basketball season. At least in Conor's mind. The man had an endless pool of energy. Or at least that is what others thought. If he could he would be out from sunrise to sunset being active as hell.
But maybe she can match his energy? After all she was out here in the wee hours of the morning. No one else is like him. At least in the way of getting up early and staying out late just to practice. So maybe she could be that friend that matches his energy.
He took her hand as a wave of a exciment washed over him as a big grin was seen on his face. As once he stood up, he started to stretch his legs and jump up and down. "You sure you want this?" he said as they started to walk over to the starting line of the rubber. "Took you everything just to catch up to me right?" he teased as he started to crack his neck. The popping being heard was a comfort to him. One of his many little quirks he does when he tries to get into the zone.
Just cause he wasn't on the track and field team didn't mean he couldn't sprint at a decent pace. Conor lead his team in steals in baseball. Granted it was only 90ft between the bases. But he did hit second most in triples. So pretty close to a 100m dash. "So when I win, I want extra bacon on my sandwich." he cheekily said as he assumed they would go to the cafe to grab something. Plus their breakfast sandwiches are just so good.

[attr="class","dibody"]Adara laughed as she pulled him up to his feet. Most sports people weren’t renowned for their intelligence, though she liked to phrase it as being smarter in more important things. School was by no means her strong suit, much to her other friends’ dismay. They’d been desperately trying to get her to study, but her mind was always focused on one thing.
“Are you sure you want this?” she retorted, stretching out her legs again. “That wasn’t everything I had by a long shot, just enough to surprise you.” It wasn’t entirely true, but she felt confident regardless. “When I win, I’m ordering the biggest coffee I can find.” She winked, then stepped up to the line. Noticing there wasn’t anyone around to call it or countdown for them, Adara quickly pulled out her phone. The once-pink case was old and faded, the screen cracked in several places. It had seen better days, having bounced out of her pocket onto the ground one too many times. “Here, I’ll have my phone do the countdown and record a video. Now nobody can get a head start, and we’ll know exactly who wins! We’ll go on the gunshot.”
Adara was so competitive, she was incapable of giving anyone any grace. She’d refuse to concede unless it was a photo finish. At least she was cognizant about it, if that counted for anything.
She popped out the tab on the back of her case and hurried over to place her phone where it could both catch the finish line and be heard clearly. She started the 30-second countdown and rushed back to the line. No more talking, no more joking—just pure focus. Her face changed, and she got into position, hands on the ground, leaning forward, knees bent, feet ready.
The phone called out, “5.....4...…3...…2...… 1.…” before a loud SHOT filled the air. Adara exploded from her starting position, getting a great takeoff. Her arms pumped up and down, her ponytail streaming out behind her. This was what life really was about. It was about free, unbridled, cold autumn wind caressing her face as she sped toward the finish line. Her focus was solitary, eyes locked on the track ahead, not even sparing a glance to the side. Her heart pounded in her ears, and she felt the tightness in her chest. ‘Breathe…’
Twelve seconds later, Adara crossed the line just milliseconds ahead of Conor. She bent over at the finish, hands on her knees, taking deep breaths. “Phew…” She looked up, her hair a mess, frizzy and wild from the sprint. “I think that one’s mine, but let me check the footage… ack, in a second.” |

Conor tried to get himself into the zone. Into that mindset of this being a real competition. Yes there was a bet on the line. But as they took their marks after she ran over to put her phone at their finish line. But he just couldn't. It wasn't a rare thing for him to go into that mode. But it happened randomly or when a match was on the line.
But this girl next to him. As he glanced over at her. He could feel the scary talent coming from her. As she got back, he noticed her eyes. And man were they dead set on winning this match. Guess he couldn't be nice and just let her win. As the gun shot was heard as they both took off. Conor not getting the best of starts. But that short burst of speed he used so many times stealing bases during the season played into a huge advantage as he got into his top speed right away catching up to Adara who had a fantastic start.
HIs hair flowing in the wind with a grin on his face. He knew he couldn't get into his zone, but that didn't mean he couldn't at least put in 100% effort. But it was all for not as the race was over in a flash. As he just knelt down. Hands on his knees. Before walking over over to her as she was checking her phone for the results. As he just fell onto the grass this time instead of the rubbery substance.
His back getting soaked with the damp grass from the dew in the morning. But man did it feel good. "No need." he breathed heavily. "You won." more heavy breathing. He might have bad vision for things far away. But he noticed the smallest details in this type of environment. So he didn't miss that she had crossed first. As he started to get his breathing under control. As he just shouted "DAMNIT" with a bunch of laughter. It was good to have a race to be honest. He wondered why he never got into track and field in the first place. It was exhilarating to be honest.
He finally sat up as he looked at her. "So where is this biggest coffee place?" he hummed as loosing didn't seem to affect him at all. Yea he was mad at himself for getting such a poor start. But lack of focus will do that. As he just looked at her with a smile on his face. After all failing was part of sports. If you can't learn from your mistakes how would you improve? In this case, if he was on the track and field team the next day if not later that day he would start working on his take offs. That was Conor's whole mentality after all, which was embracing failure as a teaching moment. Probably why he never gets discouraged.
"I'm assuming you don't want to go all sweaty. So why don't you just text me I'll meet you there. Plus having before school is the best." he said holding out his hand implying that he would enter his phone number so she could just text him when she was ready. As this was more than enough for him on this mornings exercise.

| [attr="class","dibody"]Adara was able to slow her breathing, sweat dripping down her back. It's amazing how a short sprint can really exhaust you. Especially after giving it her all. She went over the footage, playing it back over, and smiled. "Ha! That was my new personal best! Hell yeah!" A wide smile burst across her face as she looked over at him, "hey, we should totally do this more often." She lets out a snort, though pauses at his loud "DAMNIT", before smiling again. At least it seemed like he had fun, even if he lost. It was nice to see that he wasn't very upset about it. Adara never took losing well. She could see herself trying to go for a best 'two out of three' if she had ended up losing. Her competitiveness was seriously a problem.
The race was a little too close for comfort, but Adara had to remind herself that Conor was also an incredibly talented athlete. Looking back over the footage, she knew just how close it had been. However, the joy on his face made it OK. If he was an ass and that close, it'd probably piss her off, but he was a nice guy. She was glad they ran into each other (well.... that she ran into him).
"Wanna go to Stardust?" She laughs, "they're the tastiest place I can think of at least." It was pretty close to the school, and their pastries were to die for. Though Adara did feel kind of sticky and gross, her once smooth ponytail threatening to break free from her elastic band. Thankfully it was still quite early, so there was time for at least a quick pop over to the cafe. At least enough time to order and then eat on the walk back to school.
As he spoke and held out his hand, the girl bounced a little bit before opening her contacts app. "Yeah! That's a great idea actually," she hits him with a wide smile, "here!
