"Ma', I'm home!" Caleb called out to his mother the second he opened the front door. His keys jingled in his possession as he went and unfastened the ties of his shoes to leave by the door. Caleb had always been considerate of his mother's tidiness, after all. The teen continued to make his way within the sunset illuminated home as he set his backpack next to the entry table next to the door. "Ma'?" he called out again, unsure if she had heard him the first time. Caleb's shoulders moved in a slight shrug as he started to undo the rest of his attire while he made his way further within. [break][break]
However, the shape of a person seated in the study caught him completely off guard. There, on the desk chair, sat none other than his father. Caleb stared on in disbelief, then brought one of his hands up and rubbed one of his eyes. "I'm seeing things." he told himself. He had to be, right? A softened chuckle could be heard from the man as he rose from his seat and made his way over towards Caleb. Strong arms enveloped his much smaller frame as Caleb stared, much like a deer in the headlights. "Dad?" he just had to make sure while he raised his hands hesitantly to his back. [break][break]
It just felt so real. "Look how you've grown, kiddo! I'm impressed." he stated proudly. Still, he had several inches to his favor despite this. One of those large hands rested atop of Caleb's head, then tousled those usually unruly tresses. "Finally started eating your vegetables, hm?" his low tone rumbled in satisfaction. All the while, Caleb had clutched onto the uniform his father wore, squeezed tightly in his attempt to keep him there somehow. "But you're—" [break][break]
"—Dead? I am, son." Caleb paused. [break][break]
"Oh." his throat tightened. Nevertheless, he brought forth that same smile his father adored seeing on his lips, and simultaneously overlooked the sting at the corners of his eyes. "But ... why are you here? Caleb inquired, curiosity always got the best of him. "I came to say goodbye." the father admitted while he carded his calloused fingers through choppy strands of dark hair. "I don't want you to." Caleb struggled then to maintain those shattered pieces of his heart intact. "I know, kiddo. But I don't have much time. You're going to wake up soon, after all—" [break][break]
"No, please.." [break][break]
"Listen, Caleb.. always know that I love you. No matter what you go through, no matter where you are, I will always be with you and your mother. I love you both .. so very much." Caleb bowed his head and pressed his face firmly against that chest before him. To his dismay, he loosened his hold on his father, for he knew better. With a heavy heart, Caleb raised his focus towards the man and offered a tear filled smile. "I-I love you too, dad. I'll.. miss you, too."[break][break]
"There's my good boy." some time had passed and the sun painted the ceiling in rich shades of pink and orange, and as it did, it signaled their departure. Caleb's father made his way towards the door, spared a moment to adjust his uniform cap onto his head, just before he turned one last time. "And son..?" the man glanced over to the study where Caleb stood, clutched onto himself. "Y-Yeah..?" Caleb raised his head, tear stained cheeks on full display. "Tell your mother.. I'm alright." before he reached for the door and opened it. [break][break]
Bright, blinding light poured into the room and—[break][break]
'Gasp!'[break][break]
Caleb sat upright on his bed, fingers clutched right onto the light blue sheets that covered his bed. His cheeks felt hot and, when he reached up to touch one of them, he realized they were drenched in tears. Despite the initial heartache he felt, the teen managed to find closure. Slowly, Caleb shifted his position and perched on the edge of the bed. Bare feet dangled off the side, only to be greeted with the cold flooring once he stood. He could hear his mother as she bustled about in the kitchen, thus, Caleb made it his first stop of the day. [break][break]
Shuffled over towards the door, all while he sported his grey colored t-shirt and black sleep shorts. "Good morning, sleepyhead." his mother called out to him the second he caught her eye. She wore her hair in a small ponytail and also wore her sleepwear, a pair of pink shorts and a white shirt. Seemed like the source of Caleb's dress code could easily be spotted, but those are the least of his worries. Caleb kept his pace slow until he reached her and brought both arms around her smaller frame. She paused in confusion and peered over her shoulder. "What's wrong, sweetheart?" she asked. [break][break]
"Ma'.. I had a dream about dad." Caleb admitted, which caused her shoulders to droop. "Oh, honey—" "He said.. he loved us, that he misses us, and.. " he trailed off and raised his head to look at her with a small smile. ".. he said he's alright." And just like that, his mother's eyes filled to the brim in tears as she shifted in her son's hold, clutched tightly onto him for shared comfort. Caleb rubbed his hand along her back to reassure her, squeezed her body which seemed far too small at that moment. After some moments had passed, she finally interrupted the silence, "Th.. Thank you."[break][break]
Her voice barely a whisper before she raised her head and mirrored his smile. "When.. your father passed, I had asked.. if he left without suffering. If he was alright. But you were so young, you could've never understood. And now, hearing you say that, he really did come to tell us himself." she gathered her child in her embrace. "Thank you." before they shared yet another tightened hug.[break][break]
