GREENHOUSE LOBBY
AUTUMN ✧ EARLY EVENING ✧ POURING ✧ OUTFIT[attr="class","brenpost"]On his way back to campus, the first cold droplets of rain to touch his skin came as a forewarning to the storm that what was to come. Brendon had barely passed the athletic fields and reached the gardening center just outside the hobbies building when the sky opened into a relentless downpour. Rain showered all around him with a deafening roar, a fine mist swirling upward from the ground. In the middle of autumn, the droplets felt like ice against his skin, drenching him in seconds. Brendon didn’t normally mind the rain, but he had never cared to be caught out in it, especially when it was cold enough to send chills down his arms and throughout his body. As he neared the dome-shaped greenhouse’s lobby, rain hammered against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. His hand reached out for the door, initially intent on entering what he’d imagined to be a secluded, quiet nook. But he stopped short, his gaze catching sight of the female student within, safe and dry, having been watching the rain. Brendon hesitated, and then his hand slowly fell away from the door. Though soaked, with the rain still coming down around him, he was clearly hesitant to enter. | Tak, tak, tak, tak… tak…..tak.
The soft sounds of the booted heels slowly quieted in their tracks as the young maiden tilted her head back when her chest expanded. The world became a freeze frame as she enjoyed the earthy, sweet scent of the air that had gathered within her lungs. With the slowed release of the air, candied ruby eyes fluttered open and swept across the landscape. Sadly, not in good attire for the rain, Verity analyzed for a place to take shelter—and bingo. A greenhouse decorated with a sparkling glass dome would be a perfect place.
She jaunted over before even a drop was able to make contact with the neatly cut grass of the academy’s land. Once inside, safe from the rain, she took the time to look around. She had never stepped a toe inside; even if she passed by the building almost daily, she had only passing thoughts of plants that could have lazed within. Therefore, the young maiden stepped over the threshold of the building, which granted her an even stronger stench of earth but eliminated the supple sweet scent.
Inside were many potted plants, some with pretty flowered petals, but to her surprise, there were books housed inside. However, before she could run a fingertip over any of the spines, the plat, plat, plat above her pulled her away from the books. She dropped her light pink sports bag with a thunk, which found a temporary home on a sun-colored couch. With a spin, she bounced over beside the glass door to watch the rain as it platted against the building. It was only after a few seconds that she noticed a hand retracting from the knob.
The owner tickled her brain with familiarity but could not place a name to the face. Of course, he could have been someone she happened to pass during her routes to a class. Either way, she herself pulled open the door with one of her famous inviting smiles. Her smile is accompanied by her southern twang, “hi there! Would you like to come in?” The poor boy was soaked from head to toe. She stepped back, giving him enough room to come in with a bright thumb jab in the general direction of her bag. “I have a small towel if you need it.” The pink, a color she pretty much claimed all for herself, towel was freshly washed and still unused, as she had never made it to the ice rink.

GREENHOUSE LOBBY
AUTUMN ✧ EARLY EVENING ✧ POURING ✧ OUTFIT[attr="class","brenpost"]When the door was pulled open, Brendon was greeted by the petite figure of a girl with pink hair. Belatedly, he realized that he recognized her from his classes. “Hi there! Would you like to come in?” She offered cheerfully, stepping aside to make room for him. Yet, Brendon still hesitated. Despite the heavy downpour, he considered simply continuing on, making his way to the Goldenleaf dorms. Not that solitude awaited him there, he suddenly thought bitterly. With a mix-up of dorms, he’d been forced to stay on the ground floor with a roommate this year. “I have a small towel if you need it.” The girl — was her name Verity? He couldn’t remember — gestured toward a light pink towel peeking out of her duffle bag resting on the sofa. It was only the sudden crack of thunder and the ensuing flash of lightning that caused Brendon to uproot himself, entering the warmth of the greenhouse. As he stepped inside, his gaze peered upward, observing the sky through the glass walls, as more lightning rippled between the gray clouds. “Uh,” He murmured, refocusing his attention on the fellow sophomore. “No thanks.”He didn’t really care if it was odd to refuse a towel or if he was tracking in puddles of water. He wasn’t used to seeing students outside of school hours or out of uniform. She looked almost like a different person in casual attire, but he guessed he probably did as well. | A flash of a bluish hue signaled beyond the drenched individual, quickly chased by a thunderous CRACK! The shimmer of light, instead of bouncing off the girl, lit up the back of the boy. Verity had just about bitten her lip as she resisted the dramatic urge to flip one of her long pigtails. Too much during a first meeting, perhaps? Plus, there had seemed, unless her eyes had fooled her, to be a bit of hesitation. Nerves? Verity had no clue, but how close had he been to tracking through the rain to find shelter elsewhere?
However, it was not in her taste to push for any kind of answer to the mental question. Therefore, with the graceful sway, she had been back in front of the door with a hand outstretched. Her fingertips had collected raindrops as she had listened to the murmur from behind, “Uh, no thanks.” A short and simple answer. To which she had drawn her hand inward with a precise shake. Twisting around on her toes to face inside the greenhouse, she had looked him up and down and offered him a shrug.
“It’s there if you change your mind.” It had not been a big towel anyway, but at least he could have dried his face. To each their own. It was not like it had been hurting anyone for him to not take her offer. No skin off her back… well, losing more skin from her back? What had been a bit more anyway? It was already an unnatural scar, which she had winced at with the tiniest slight from a mirror. The thought had made her want to itch away the harsh reddish hues from her back. To push the notions away, she had leaned against the glass beside her door. Crossing one leg over the other and leaning her upper half forward slightly, she had said, “Seeing as you were wetter than a drowned rat, I’m guessing you did not quite dodge the rain?” She had hummed, leaning her whole body against the glass. Happily listening to the plants quickly hitting against the glass harder than before. “It had started raining cats and dogs without much notice.”

GREENHOUSE LOBBY
AUTUMN ✧ EARLY EVENING ✧ POURING ✧ OUTFIT[attr="class","brenpost"]The girl turned to face him, her eyes flicking over him briefly before she offered a casual shrug. “It’s there if you change your mind,” she replied, not pressing the matter as she leaned back against the glass beside the door, one leg crossed over the other. “Seeing as you were wetter than a drowned rat, I’m guessing you did not quite dodge the rain?” She hummed, her Southern accent distinctively heavy. Yeah, her accent had been one of the defining characteristics that had made her stand out in class, Brendon quietly noted. “It had started raining cats and dogs without much notice.”Brendon took the time to shake off the excess water from his hands, but his sweater was completely drenched, clinging uncomfortably. “I wasn’t… and I didn’t bring an umbrella.” He remarked quietly, the rhythmic hum of the rain against the greenhouse’s glass allowing a more peaceful atmosphere, despite the awkwardness he felt. “Uh… I’ve seen you in class before.” He pointed out, his gaze briefly eying the pink towel sticking out from her duffel bag, but he adamantly refused it, regardless of being sopping wet. His amber eyes turned back to her. “…Ver…ity?” He questioned, gaze narrowing with uncertainty as he tried to recall if he was remembering her name correctly. | “I wasn’t… and I didn’t bring an umbrella.”
She offered him a hum, with a slight curl of her thin lips in amusement. He wasn’t what? Drowning like a rat? And she could tell he didn’t have an umbrella on hand, or he wouldn’t have been drenched with rain. He did look uncomfortable in his wet clothes, but there wasn’t much she could offer to help—unless he wanted her to turn away while he stripped down to his undergarments. However, from the look of him, he would have died on the spot from embarrassment. Not that there was anyone else around to see him, and she wasn’t the type to watch.
“Uh… I’ve seen you in class before…Ver…ity?” His eyes narrowed as if searching deep within his memory to pull out her name. He had a leg up on her—she couldn’t even begin to recall his name. Not that it was new for her. She had no reason to be bothered to remember the name of someone she had never interacted with before. Still, she gave a nod and had enough shame to offer him a guilty smile.
“Yes, Verity Valendeer.” She pushed herself off the wall so she was standing up straight to address him. “Seems you know more about me than I do about you.” She positioned herself at a comfortable chatting distance. “Mind letting me in on your name?” She’d commit it to memory this time… probably. As long as this wasn’t a one-off interaction, never to see him again. Which was unlikely if they had class together. Honestly, they were freshmen together, and this was their first interaction? They must not have had much crossover with each other. Or was it something else?

GREENHOUSE LOBBY
AUTUMN ✧ EARLY EVENING ✧ POURING ✧ OUTFIT[attr="class","brenpost"] “Yes, Verity Valendeer,” Verity clarified with a nod, her smile somewhat sheepish. However, Brendon found himself momentarily snagged on her last name — by a mixture of interest and envy. The name reminded him of a woodland, frequented by deer, but he chose to ignore the jealousy that suddenly stirred within him. Wh—What a ridiculous thing to feel jealous over, he thought, redirecting his focus elsewhere. Verity helped by casually continuing their conversation. “Seems you know more than me than I do about you. Mind letting me in on your name?”He glanced briefly around the greenhouse’s seating area, finding nothing for him to do. Other than stand, creating a puddle at his feet, while the rain continued to unrelentingly drum against the glass walls. “We’re in the same grade…,” He remarked, a subtle frown ever present on his features. “Some of the same classes… that’s all…”Perhaps he was more observant than he realized, in his never-ending strive to stay away from everybody. “Brendon,” He finally answered, his gaze drifting toward the couch where she’d left her belongings. Had she used the greenhouse as coverage from the rain as well? Or had she just come here for some peace and quiet? | With a practiced wince, she offered another friendly smile as she gracefully moved around him, taking a seat on the couch without missing a beat. She wasn’t wet, so she happily sat down. “Sorry, I don’t mean to seem rude for not knowing your name, Brendon.” She clicked her tongue. His frown annoyed her slightly. Did he expect her to remember his name, even though she’d never spoken to him before? “I’m quite the busy bee, you see.” Crossing her legs, she leaned back into the couch as if she were completely at ease and had nothing to hide. However, her opinion of him wasn’t great, based on that one fragmented sentence. Of course, he seemed a little awkward, but there was a chance he just came off that way; he wouldn’t be the first person she had met like that. She wouldn’t judge him fully after only one meeting. “Between practicing my skills at the rink, my part-time work at Stardust, and keeping my grades at straight A’s, I find myself tied up with a lot of responsibilities.” She then placed her hands loosely in her lap. “So I tend not to remember people I’ve never spoken to.” After all, they were nothing more than strangers she passed on the street.
… A stranger on the street, huh? She took a deep breath and let her annoyance roll off her. She didn’t know him. Maybe not knowing his name seemed rude to him, just as she found his phrasing rude. She understood that not everyone would see things the same way. And he didn’t really seem like a people person, so it did somewhat surprise her that he would be upset that she didn’t know his name. But he knew hers? Interesting. She got up from the seat she had just taken, tilting her head as she leaned closer to him without entering his personal space. “And we’ve never spoken to each other,” she said, putting a finger to her lip as her wrist popped away from her face. “I’m honestly surprised you even knew my name to begin with.” She wondered why, but didn’t outright question him, giving him the chance to dodge the unspoken question entirely.

GREENHOUSE LOBBY
AUTUMN ✧ EARLY EVENING ✧ POURING ✧ OUTFIT[attr="class","brenpost"]Verity moved to sit on the couch next to her bag. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to seem rude for not knowing your name, Brendon. I’m quite the busy bee, you see.” She let out a soft tsk, crossing her legs as she leaned back. Despite her casual demeanor, there was a hint of unease in her response. “Between practicing my skills at the rink, my part-time work at Stardust, and keeping my grades at straight A’s, I find myself tied up with a lot of responsibilities.”Brendon stared at her in silence, his expression unmoved, though internally, he was mildly surprised by her sudden defensiveness. It almost felt like she was bragging. “So I tend not to remember people I’ve never spoken to.” There was a sharpness to her words, hidden under the pretense of friendliness, and Brendon’s gaze narrowed onto her in frustration and annoyance. When she suddenly stood, he tensed, especially when she came to stand directly in front of him. However, her persistence and clear irritation over the subject began to dawn on him. “And we’ve never spoken to each other. I’m honestly surprised you even knew my name to begin with.”He sighed, raising his hands defensively. “Look, I don’t really care if you don’t know who I am?” He retorted, taking a step back. “I’m not really sure what you’re getting at.” His brows furrowed, his frown deepening as he quietly eyed her, uncertain about her sudden shift in mood or what she wanted from him. | With her fingertips covering her lips, she closed her eyes with a hum. When she opened them again, her gaze was tense, a stark contrast to her usual friendly demeanor. “Oh? Your facial expression suggested otherwise.” That’s how he came off to her, anyway, and she couldn’t stand that type. It reminded her of her old school in the States of the awful sneers of mean girls. How dare she not remember the worker bees who waited on her cousins, their names falling from her lips like dirt. There wasn’t much she could do about it unless she wanted to make things worse at home. But she refused to take it now; she’d stand up for herself. Not that she was used to it—she was generally on friendly terms with most here.
With a calculated, lazy stumble, she shrugged and hit the back of her knees on the couch as she sat down. “I’m not getting at anything. You’re the one who came in here being standoffish.” She glanced at him before pulling her sports bag into her lap and rummaging through it. “And you seem to take great offense at someone not knowing your name.” She was exaggerating a bit; while he did seem offended, it was only to a mild extent. Verity pulled out her phone, opening up Cookie Clicker absentmindedly. This interaction was quickly becoming one she didn’t want to be a part of. She felt flustered by the whole situation. |

GREENHOUSE LOBBY
AUTUMN ✧ EARLY EVENING ✧ POURING ✧ OUTFIT[attr="class","brenpost"]She tapped her fingertips against her lips and briefly closed her eyes, though her irritation was beginning to bubble to the surface. “Oh?” She hummed, fixing him with a sharp, reproachful stare. “Your facial expression suggested otherwise.”Was she seriously offended? Well, clearly… Her annoyance took him by surprise, as it wasn’t something he’d ever seen in the few times he’d noticed her in class. After making her point, she flopped back onto the couch, giving him a brief glance as she pulled out her phone. “I’m not getting at anything. You’re the one who came in here being standoffish.”Brendon sighed, placing his hand over his face, exasperation creeping in. “And you seem to take great offense at someone not knowing your name.”He grunted, pulling his hand away and shaking his head. “I’m just going to go.” He wasn’t going to argue with her. If she was offended by his way of being and convinced he was irritated she hadn’t recognized him, then so be it. It was still pouring just beyond the door, but he was already drenched. A little more rain on the way to Goldenleaf wouldn’t make much of a difference. He just hoped his roommate wasn’t there. He’d have to lock himself in one of those damned public bathrooms just to change— what a pain.
