EDUARD A. WINKLER Panacea academy, british columbia, canadA It was a day the two of them had been planning for a while. Warren somehow… found out about Eduard’s love for fishing and seafood, and wasted no time in making it his personal mission to get the janitor out on the water with a fishing pole in his hands. Eduard didn’t hate the idea, as he did sometimes go fishing with his buddies from the fire department, but oftentimes fishing was his quiet time, and the thought of Warren being well- Warren- kind of worried him. The man was loud. Would his volume scare all the fish away?
Well, either way he was just happy to be going out on the water, even if Warren did scare the fish. The weather was getting colder and the nights were already chilly, and soon they’d be out of time to just go out and enjoy the warmth of the sun while out on the lake. The two of them were even told about a new nice spot to go to, and Eduard was plenty excited to see if the fish would bite in this new location. Normally, his luck was pretty rotten.
Idly, Eduard wondered if maybe he was the one scaring the fish away, as he pulled up his black cargo pants and paced into the bathroom and looked in the mirror at himself. He was wearing a blue plaid long sleeved flannel and his tan fishing vest over the top. Boy, was his hair looking long. He reached up to run his fingers through the dusty gray-brown length, and sighed as it fell back into his eyes. At least today he was wearing a hat.
Again, he used his fingers to brush his hair back and pulled his favorite old bucket hat onto his head, and he was ready to go!
The two of them were going to meet at the school before heading out to the new spot, and once Eduard said ‘goodbye’ to his lazy cats, he was out the door with his trusted pole and his bait box.
Once he arrived at the school, he dropped Warren a text message stating that he was waiting in the parking lot, and that he would drive.
Now, it was time to wait for his buddy to show up.

Morning possessed a soft, warm blur to every action. Breakfast consumed with unneeded haste, fishing gear gathered from its small, unassuming corner in the backyard shed and loaded into the truck and hair laboriously gathered into a large, tight bun that barely squeezed through the hole in the back of a simple brown baseball cap. There was little nuance in Warren's preparations. A simple shirt with a lightly frayed bottom edge and sweatpants were not the classic 'fishing attire', but adequate for the brunette. A majority of his fishing trips occurred when he went camping with his daughter and they took a peaceful moment.
[break][break]
Large trout and bass in a small lake were mentioned multiple times by the fellow fishermen Warren knew. A rumour some stated that was unsubstantiated, but Warren was always prepared for a little adventure! Hopefully, his fishing companion, Eddie would enjoy some mild dynamics to their trip. When he arrived at the Panacea Academy parking lot, he gave Eduard a wave and held up a finger; admittedly, he thought he would arrive first. The brunette brought out his phone, sending a quick text to Penny to inform her about the trip and how he would answer her afterward.
[break][break]
Leaving her to wonder was always avoided. Manifesting concern from a lack of replies was a notion Warren avoided whenever necessary... especially after the accident that, he assumed, rattled them both. When finished, he slid the device back into his pocket and hopped out of the truck.
[break][break]
"Eddie!" He happily called out. "Sorry about that, had to let my daughter know before we headed out. Didn't want to worry her, you know? Anyways, do you have a vehicle preference?"
[break][break]
The large man was under the assumption the truck would be preferred, but admittedly, he never complained when he escaped driving duties. Snow had not ruined the road conditions yet, but the thought always lingered in the back of his skull- a chattering reminder of the frightening, blizzard of an evening where he lost his warm.

EDUARD A. WINKLER Panacea academy, british columbia, canadA Eduard was sitting in his truck when he noticed the big guy approaching (he was hard to miss, honestly.). The second he saw him, he slid out, and shut the door closed behind him.
"Sorry about that, had to let my daughter know before we headed out. Didn't want to worry her, you know? Anyways, do you have a vehicle preference?"
Eduard bit his lip, his brows furrowed. Maybe Warren hadn’t looked at his message, but that was fine. Especially if he was talking to his kid. But the choice of vehicle was obvious to him. Eduard was going to drive! His truck might’ve been an older two seater covered in dents with chipping white paint in places, but the engine was good and his ride was reliable. It also wasn't one of those ridiculous supped-up, oversized shit-mobiles that cut him off or drove up his ass entirely too much. It was perfect for him, and he would drive the damn thing until it couldn’t anymore.
“I drive. You’re big but my truck doesn’t have a ridiculous back seat or anything, so the front is plenty roomy.” He turned around after saying the words, and started towards his vehicle, “You can put your poles in the bed under the cover.”
He didn’t bother to help the guy out. Warren didn’t need it. He had plenty of height to reach over the top and get himself situated without his help. Eduard simply climbed back into his vehicle and began to clear some of the tools and paperwork he’d had sitting in the spot that would soon become Warren’s. He also used an old rag to wipe some of the dust away from the dash, before he leaned back and started the engine again. He was eager to get going. He was ready to go fishing!

An attempt was made to arrive at the school parking lot before Eduard had. Before his arrival, he had informed Penelope of his plans to fish with the school janitor. The father was open with his teenage daughter; there was no reason not to be. Furthermore, he could harass the light-haired teen of the day's catches and potentially invite her to partake in some freshly caught fish! Camping always provided the opportunity to eat freshly caught fish, but Warren enjoyed spoiling his daughter whenever possible; and when it avoided over-indulgence.
[break][break]
A chuckle rumbled out of Warren’s chest at Eduard’s notion of a ‘ridiculous back seat’ in a truck. A two-seater would never suit the large man’s needs or family situation. He offered whenever Penelope needed it to pick her and her friends up and with the young woman going on sixteen. There was no way he was downsizing to a smaller truck... not to mention the additional bulk provided a sense of safety.
[break][break]
“And what exactly makes a backseat ridiculous? I’m not complaining or anything, but it doesn’t change the room,” He asked, amusement in his tone.
[break][break]
There was genuine curiosity captured in Warren’s tone. The older man’s concepts were intriguing or at least amusing to listen to. There was no hesitation as Warren walked to the side of the truck bed and fished out the rod. Promptly afterwards he opened the apparently ridiculous back seat to grab the backpack he slid his fishing supplies into. Everything gathered, Warren nudged the back seat door closed, using the right arm as opposed to the prosthetic. He wanted to avoid scratching the door.
[break][break]
The supplies were carefully slid under the box, Warren taking care to avoid any tangling or damage. Once settled, he closed the tailgate back up and settled into the passenger seat, somewhat relieved driving would not be his responsibility. There was little spoken over the drive with Warren attempting to discuss the weather or scenery casually. Little matters that were easily ignored and required little elaboration. However, as they parked, the large man’s conversational topic changed to the fishing spot.
[break][break]
“Alright, so there’s a spot by the back of a small lake, a little inlet with no dock or anything from my understanding and that is where people say they found the fish… but it is a little bit of a hike… Still willing hearing that? There are plenty of alright spots along the way,” Warren explained as he left the vehicle.
[break][break]
Once on his feet, he headed to the back of Eduard’s truck to help open up the back to grab their supplies. In his opinion, the walk was not bad to reach the location, but he wanted to avoid ruining Eduard’s fun.

EDUARD A. WINKLER Panacea academy, british columbia, canadA Eduard was happy once they arrived at the so-called “secret spot”. It was in a secluded forest-y area about an hour or so out of town, and although Eduard was quiet most of the ride, he appreciated the conversation he’d shared with Warren about this and that. (And of course his opinions on why oversized trucks with back seats were stupid!) He was also pleased that Warren wasn’t the type that didn’t seem to mind that most stories were ended with head nods and grunts of various kinds from him. Sometimes he just simply preferred listening or looking at nature.
Once he found a spot, Eduard parked his car and pulled his bucket hat lower over his head, before he slid out after Warren. Of course the man started talking immediately. He explained that there was a bit of walking to do, but that supposedly there was some fine fishing in this magical spot.
“Yeah, my legs might be shit but I think I can handle a bit of walking. Sheesh.” Eduard replied, knowing that he was being annoying, but Warren must’ve been used to his jabs by now, or else why the hell did he hang around!?
Wrapping around the back of his white truck, Eduard leaned over to pull out his fishing gear, and started off towards a small hut where a large series of canoes and kayaks were laid out. Would his giant friend fit in a canoe? More than likely it would be okay, right? The longer he stared, the more tempting it was to rent one. Would they have to walk all the way to the special spot with the thing, though? That sounded like the true pain.
He turned towards Warren finally.
“Hey. Canoe?”

Their arrival brought about the natural actions and thoughts. Inside his mind, Warren was already mapping the path to the fishing spot. Inaudible words reciting what he was told by those who provided the hit on the secret fishing spot. Occasionally, the brunette nodded or shook his head until finally satisfied with the reviewed instructions. Once satisfied, he went around to the side of the truck and fished out his gear. The backpack was brought close with rod secured to the side and gradually going through the checks after the bumpy ride down to the forested areas.
[break][break]
The older man's snappier words prompted a slight chuckle to rumble from Warren. The man's manner of speaking was something Warren found himself adjusting to quickly... The accidental painting of the canvas in an artistic fervor proved deep down, Eddie had a good heart! He merely guarded it with a little prickly barbwire.
[break][break]
"Looks good," Warren unconsciously commented once finished his checks.
[break][break]
The walk was nothing extreme. Something Warren would consider an easy hike where the only true threat was brand new golfer holes, ruts or animals on the path. He brought the backpack over his shoulders, steadying it over them in preparation for the minor hike. As he turned to face Eduard, Warren heard a single word. Canoe. A soft 'hmm' escaped his lips in question, his eyes glancing at the small shack with canoes and kayaks. An 'oh' left the one-armed man's lips before another, small fit of laughter left his mouth.
[break][break]
"If you think we could handle carrying it down an easy hiking trail, I'm game," Warren answered.
[break][break]
He strode up to shack, glancing over the variety of canoes and kayaks with a curious glint in his eyes. The brunette's eyes were inspecting the small vessels, both sizing them up for weight and curiously admiring the craftsmanship. The shaping was excellent and the paddles were in great condition. The general woodwork was intriguing and something Warren's mind curiously put together, recognizing some techniques, but not all.
[break][break]
"They're in good condition in my professional opinion," Warren declared to Eduard with a grin, a chuckle and some theatrics in his voice. "Do you know how to paddle one or?"
[break][break]
He heard there was a rhythm to paddling a canoe, however, he had never attempted to guide one. The wooden vessels were intriguing, but something Warren had never researched despite years of camping and fishing. He preferred the simple and wider row boats that provided a little extra room.

EDUARD A. WINKLER Panacea academy, british columbia, canadA In no time flat, Warren was off observing each and every damn canoe, formulating his own opinions about the things, not even giving Eduard a chance to! Since when had Warren become an expert on all things boat-related, huh? Shaking his head, Eduard paced over towards the other guy who seemed to be enjoying himself a little too much.
“Damn you, Warren. Don’t even trust me to be able to tell what a good boat looks like?” Eduard said, joining the other man in looking over each one of the canoes, “And yeah. I’ll be fine, I used to carry men your size and larger out of burning buildings. Don’t you forget it!” He distinctly remembered having to nearly carry a 400-lb man out of a building after a faulty outlet set the entirety of his home ablaze. A damn wooden canoe was more than tolerable after that.
His other question however.
That certainly had a different answer didn’t it? Knowing how to do something theoretically and knowing how to do it in practice were two quite different things. But Eduard had absolutely no trouble paddling a one man kayak! How much harder could a two person canoe be? Warren would sit on one side and he on the other. Nothing crazy about that! Plus Eduard had plenty of experience in working as a team.
But he would just have to leave Warren wondering for now.
Eduard walked up to the window, and paid the worker for the canoe’s rental for the entirety of the day, and together the three of them picked out the roomiest canoe that could fit both their coolers, and Warren’s size comfortably, and then they were on their hike. Eduard pulled the boat behind him, while Warren carried all of the gear. (He was more than a little insistent on being the boat puller.)
Eduard walked behind Warren, glancing at his surroundings. They were in a pretty heavily forested area, but seeing the mountains behind the line of the trees, and feeling the warmth of the early autumn sun on his face, Eduard felt pretty good about this secret spot they were going to.
… That was until they got there.
It wasn’t much more than a thirty or so minute walk. They’d passed plenty of lovely places on the way as well! A quaint waterfall, a tiny bridge over a creek… But what Warren had led them to… well whatever the secret spot was, didn’t seem to be much more than a tiny, quickly evaporating pond. Eduard didn’t doubt that there was good fish in it, but he easily saw “lakes” this size in housing developments.
He couldn’t help but feel amused by it all.
“Is this the spot, Warren?” He snorted, “The treasure trove of fishing spots?” It was true that fishing spots weren’t supposed to be shared! Had someone pulled his friend’s leg!? At the very least they could definitely fit their canoe in the secret spot.

Years of woodworking made Warren confident about his comprehension of excellent techniques and strategies. However, he knew there were varying requirements for boat-making. Making boats waterproof played a crucial role beyond the woodwork aspect. Wood absorbs water, weakening and degrading it without proper protection. However, boats operating for years were bound to be waterproof with the only risks being holes. A booming laugh escaped him as Eduard chastised him about not trusting his boat judging.
[break][break]
“You don’t do woodworking at 12 to not know a thing or two on how to assess it,” he answered with a laugh. “And I won’t, I won’t. Would never forget something like that.”
[break][break]
Before there was always respect for the heroes willing to place their lives in harm’s way for others… but after the accident? A tenfold increase existed afterwards. There were limited pieces Warren remembered about the accident. Everything was a blurred mess of memories, distant noises and confusion. Inside the crevices of his mind, the entire occurrence was dream-like. Nonexistent despite the clear indication of his left arm’s absence. Either way, Warren appreciated firefighters and other emergency services for saving him and his daughter.
[break][break]
Without an answer from Eduard regarding his canoe paddling capabilities, Warren provided a shrug. Once paid up and prepared, the pair set off. Warren in his bulk took the position of supply carrier to Eduard’s insistence; not that he minded. Through the forest, they travelled. Trees provided a canopy from the sun, vast and shady. They passed multiple, beautiful fishing spots, water glistening in the sunlight: a quiet creek and a bedazzled waterfall glittering in the gorgeous sun.
[break][break]
Their fishing spot was bound to be amazing. It would be better than the adorable creek and its sparkling waterfall… At least, Warren believed it until they arrived at the small, shrinking pond. The large man gazed around the small pond, setting down the supplies with a gentle ‘uhhh’.
[break][break]
“Looks like it… The sunny days must have made the water line recede,” Warren began, a bashful chuckle leaving him. “You still wanna try it?”
[break][break]
There could still be fish within the waters of the pond. The water body was not small enough to snuff them out. The rumour could still hold truth regardless of the lowered shoreline.

EDUARD A. WINKLER Panacea academy, british columbia, canadA “Looks like it… The sunny days must have made the water line recede… You still wanna try it?” Eduard heard the other man chuckle and he couldn’t help but smile in spite of himself. It certainly looked like a rather dry summer season had caused the water to recede a bit… or maybe a lot… But that didn’t dampen his spirit. He was gonna fish, dammit! They were going to fish together!
“Yes, let's give it a shot. If we don’t, what on earth was the point of coming out here, then? I’m not much of a hiker, no matter how nice the landscape is.” He pulled on the cart that held the boat, leading it towards the water’s edge, “Besides. We don’t know what is inside of this pond.”
The closer he got to the edge of the water, the more muddy the ground became. There was no doubt in his mind that the shore of the small lake used to be much further out. But he had his waterproof boots on for a reason! This was nothing to him. Even the slippery, sticky mud didn’t stand a chance against him! He plucked his boots out of the sludge, and together the two of them got the boat off the small cart and back into the water. One by one, they got their stuff inside, and then Eduard got in while Warren pushed them off the shore and got inside himself.
The boat rocked quite vigorously when the large man got inside, but he wasn’t so clumsy that the boat tipped or anything. Eduard was grateful for that.
“Hey buddy if you rocked the boat any harder we’d both be underwater.” Eduard wasn’t smiling while he said it, but he knew Warren would pick up on his joke immediately. Within a moment, he was flipping open his bait box and putting his hook on the line, “I bet I can catch more fish than you can.”

There were maps of the area that could be pulled out to desperately salvage the trip if needed. The little mudhole of a pond was not the glistening, glass waters described to Warren. Perhaps back when it brimmed with water the mud kicked up less and the fish had wiggle room. However, it appeared despite the poor appearance of the pond, good ol' Eddie was raring to try it. The large man's lips broadened into a smile at the older man's willingness. It was a nice experience! Perhaps the passion for fishing soothed some of the grumpiness exhibited by the janitor.
[break][break]
The attitude never bothered Warren. Some people wore thorns to protect themselves and there was no seething venom from the older man's lips. Merely a gruffness Warren could handle without concern. A laugh escaped Warren as his hands settled on his hips, showing the bulk of his shoulders unintentionally.
[break][break]
"Alrighty! Then I guess we're going for it, eh, Eddie?!" Warren's voice left him in a thunderstrike.
[break][break]
The man's loudness lacked boundaries, rather, he appeared completely unaware a majority of the time. Without hesitation, Warren moved to assist Eduard with their boat. His boots sunk into the mud with a squelch followed by the earthly gasp of ground forced to release the boot. With little effort, the pair managed to get the boat into the water. The brunette pushed them into the water, the boat rocking as he carefully hauled himself aboard. Once steadied in the water, Warren exhaled softly with a smile. Another laugh left him, more gentle and peaceful as he organized himself.
[break][break]
The baitbox was placed between the pair of muddy boots to slip under his seat when needed. The rod was double-checked for any issues that may have occurred in transport. Once satisfied, Warren nodded to himself.
[break][break]
"Well if we go scuba diving, we would find the fish," Warren responded with a laugh. "Oh? Is that so? Should we not go a little further into the pond?"
[break][break]
Another laugh rumbled out of Warren as he adjusted the rod, opening his bait box to take a look. Golden eyes combed over the options, eventually finding one of the options recommended for the fish stated to be found here. If Eduard decided to remain here for now, then Warren would try it out! The brunette was here for fun and fish after all!

EDUARD A. WINKLER Panacea academy, british columbia, canadA "Alrighty! Then I guess we're going for it, eh, Eddie?!"
Although Eduard had for the most part gotten used to the volume of Warren’s voice, there were still times when it kind of caught him off guard, and now was one of those times. And by now he was in the boat and getting situated. Eduard could only hope that his boisterous friend’s voice didn’t scare away all of their fish friends! One of those friends was gonna be their dinner and if they caught nothing, well… he supposed the two of them would have to go hungry (or stop by a restaurant potentially but that was beside the point!)
"Oh? Is that so? Should we not go a little further into the pond?"
Eduard glanced up from where he was preparing his rod.
“Yeah. We can scoot in a bit, I was just getting my pole ready. I gotta be prepared for the hundreds of fish we are going to catch today.” Eduard stated. Of course his optimism rarely ever matched that of his friend’s, and one might’ve accused him of using sarcasm, but in this moment, he truly was prepared! He wasn’t called the Fishing King (He was never called that) for no reason!
Once his pole was ready and Warren looked to be as ready as he could be, the two of them paddled a bit more towards the center of the lake, and one at a time, cast their lines. As Eduard watched his small bobbin bounce on the tiny ripples of the lake, he leaned backward.
“So Warren… I’ve always been a little curious… and hope you don’t mind my asking this…” He flashed a glance towards the other man quickly, before looking away again, “Your arm… it was lost in an accident, no? Did you make your metal arm yourself?”
The metal arm had always interested him somewhat. Not because he wanted to pry into the other man’s life, he truly didn’t find himself pondering the ins and outs of how Warren Grey had lost an arm. In fact, with how he’d done his best to hide his own (somewhat extensive) scarring, (except for the bits that crept up onto the side of his neck and cheek) he tried to avoid asking other people questions like that. But for heaven's sake! The man had a really cool metal arm! And Eduard was a male at the end of the day. He wanted to know about the cool piece of technology he saw so often.

The brunette settled into the boat with a steady easing. A carefully baited hook, the final assessments of the rod, and general verification of his equipment occurred naturally. They needed to successfully catch something; or rather ideally. Their plan involved eating some of their catch after all. Additionally, Warren wanted to catch a little extra for one of Penny's weekend visits. The young girl deserved some fish caught and served by her father. The older man's explanation prompted Warren's nod as he focused on his rod. Once settled, Warren carefully leaned the rod against his shoulder.
[break][break]
Together, the pair rowed deeper into the shrunken pond, finding the deeper pool section. Each cast their rods, one at a time. After Eduard cast his line, Warren sent his out and comfortably leaned back to watch the floating bobbins. A gentle exhale escaped the brunette's lips as he settled in for the comfortable wait. The other man's words brought golden eyes to a side glance at the janitor... for his arm to be mentioned. There was no pain from the mention of his prosthetic. While the car accident and subsequent hospitalization still held space in Warren's mind, he could push it back. The soft, greying melancholy of his golden eyes was quick to fade into a gentle chuckle and a smile.
[break][break]
"No, I didn't make it myself. I'm good, but not that good with the mechanics," Warren explained neutrally, moving his arm to show it more. "It's specialized. My dad knows people. He's maybe a lawyer, but he has worked with a lot of big companies. Guess he called in a favour and I ended up with my arm. I don't know how they managed it biologically, but something with nervous system connection. It's why it works like an actual arm and hand- okay more works like one. Just a little stiff sometimes. At most, I do minor repairs, but nothing massive given how advanced it is."
[break][break]
There were nuances in the technology of Warren's left arm. Certain features he learned to understand to accomplish minor maintenance. The arm itself was waterproof despite its appearance and tuned into the nerves of his body. It was a fascinating piece of technology Warren could never hope to fully explain with his limited understanding. He merely knew the nervous system, which meant movement, meant metal hand works similar to a genuine one. However, there was no sensation in the prosthetic. Temperatures, touch and pain would never be registered by the device. When he initially received the prosthetic, he was told how fortunate it was he could reasonably move it. Anything further would be a fool's dream and require bioengineering the facility lacked and that was potentially decades in the future.

EDUARD A. WINKLER Panacea academy, british columbia, canadA As Warren showed off his arm, Eduard eyed it up and down, even though it was something he’d seen many times. The piece of technology was still striking. Made his friend seem like a cool cyborg from a movie.
“Mhh, I see.” Eduard replied, turning to look back at the bobbin floating on the rippling surface of the water, “Listen, if you can do repairs on it, that is a start. Stuff like that is beyond me.”
Eduard had seen it all in the force. Individuals with their limbs torn off, people’s bodies’ being made into swiss cheese, and other horrors that most people never saw in their entire lives, and worst of all, he’d had to render first aid on all of it. But computers? Technology? Working with metal and wood? That was something well beyond his scope. He respected those who could do what he could not, even if others weren’t as loud at showing it to them as they were to his old profession.
The bobbin dipped.
Eduard leaned forward and kept a close eye on it. It dipped again, and then a third time. This was it right?
… Ploink!!
It dipped under and disappeared completely. Eduard felt the rush of excitement as he pulled his rod backwards and began to turn the handle of the reel until his line was tight.
“Already? Maybe this spot is not so bad!”
Eduard gave his line a pull, but whatever it was, was resisting and it was resisting hard. The bespectacled man pulled harder on the line, noticing how the rod arched heavily. Arms pulled tightly to his core, Eduard pulled backward and tried turning the reel again, but it was difficult and there was something underneath leading the line.
“Hah!! Maybe I caught dinner!? Help me out!"

I'll get this fire higher
[attr="class","therivnotes"] notes My journey with googling what is okay with fishing: Can someone set their rod off to the side? Google proceeds to tell me nothing. Ask if other people can grab the handle only to get an answer to the first question. I think google just hates answering my fishing questions. Very "Go touch water, newb." |

I got that fire in my soul

Discussing the mechanical arm attached to him always made Warren's golden eyes glance over at it. He could understand why it drew attention. Few people possessed a massive, mechanical arm attached to the shoulder to them... Especially when you consider the massive injury that occurred to prompt the creation of the contraption. Additionally, the technology was relatively new and made people curious about the future of prosthetics. The fishing rod was placed between both hands when Warren flexed and tapped his fingers against the hard, grippy base of his rod. He nodded at the older man's comment.

"It's better than having to call in a ticket every time something goes wrong," Warren answered with a soft chuckle.

The golden-eyed metalworking teacher watched his bobbin. Waiting for the telltale signs of a fish taking the bait... Until he heard the familiar sound of the fishing rod gears and the characteristic tension-relieving bend. His eyes glanced over, watching until he received the invitation to help. The large man settled his rod to the side, propping it upright with the backpack and bait box he brought, figuring it would be fine for a few minutes. He grabbed the net and watched, bringing it close to net the fish once it was near. A darkened spot was under the murky depths.
[break][break]
Quickly, the net passed through the water, scooping a dark shape out of the water with a victorious smile. A triumphant laugh escaped Warren's lips as he straightened his back.
[break][break]
"We got it Ed- ... oh," the large man paused as he finally noticed what was in the net. "That's... not edible..."
[break][break]
An old, black rubber boot covered in seaweed and leaking water sat idly in the net... The hook had embedded into the rubber, being stuck there after it snagged it... Rather than a large, supper-worthy fish, there was the ugly boot inside... The large man plucked the boot and set the net to the side. The water was poured out before carefully unhooking Eddie's rod from the rubber. Large fingers fiddled with it, carefully releasing the rod from the boot before setting it aside. No use throwing the trash back.

EDUARD A. WINKLER Panacea academy, british columbia, canadA When the two of them pulled up the “fish” that had been biting at his line, Eduard slumped into the bottom of the canoe in resignation. Damn his cursed luck!! He wanted to chuck the boot back into the lake as revenge for the lake’s cruelty, but he knew that Warren would have to scold him again if he threw that kind of tantrum, so he just settled for pouting on the wooden bench.
“Maybe if it was leather we could give it a shot.” Eduard replied flatly, stretching out his stiff legs, “All that excitement for nothing.”
He shut his eyes for a moment, and crossed his arms. It had been so long since he’d had a good catch too! When he opened his eyes again, he was watching the other man’s bobbin now. He hadn’t gotten around to his own line yet, but maybe Warren would have the better luck? He was so damn radiant all the time, maybe the fish would hop into their boat out of respect for his gentle soul. (Even if he was loud as hell.)
But just as that somewhat rude thought crossed his mind, now Warren’s bobbin began to bounce.
“Oh hey, you’d better go grab that, I think we got a nibbler.” Eduard leaned forward, “Or maybe the second boot?”
