He continued his days like normal. He went to classes, mingled with his friends. Oh, and occasionally visited detention, of course. The latter being the one he stayed in the most. It wasn't his fault that one of his teachers had a foot shoved up his— [break][break] Well, whatever. [break][break] After his sentence had been lifted, Hayato gathered his bag and strapped it onto his shoulder before he made his way towards the door. He gained the usual 'I better not catch you in here again' line, which he dismissed with a hand wave and a, "Yeah, yeah." on his way out before he closed the door behind him. The hallway had been emptied out. Probably due to classes still being in session, most likely, or maybe they'd all gone home. He wasn't sure, considering all sense of time inside that room became only but a fraction of a memory.[break][break] He quietly made his way down the corridor and took a quick right, all while he maintained his gaze on the ground outstretched before him till it reached the opposite side. The sun hung high in that bright blue, painted the world below in its glorious glow which seeped through the glass window panes to his right hand side. The shadows were over casted by the end, but the dim light had been enough to illuminate a familiar figure that made the teen stop in his tracks. [break][break] He blinked a couple of times, then a small smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. She seemed to be occupied with some documents, by the looks of things, just a few steps in front of him. He quietly made his way over towards her, doing his best not to arouse any sort of suspicion as he did so until he practically towered over her. As it were, she made a small squeak of surprise instead, nearly dropping the stack of notices in her hands. Looking up, she saw the tall, lanky figure she’d taken to calling Soda Boy in her mind. A reminder of an evening she’d desperately wanted to scrub out of her mind.

Not so much for you." Yato tacked on a slight shrug, mainly due to the fact that he currently spoke to the vice president of the student council, after all. Granted, he originally didn't know that. After their initial meeting, he believed he'd seen her before somewhere. It only took him a few more glimpses of her during the school week for it to actually click. [break][break] Amusing how one person can blend and weave into the sea of the student body without really trying, but that wasn't important at the moment. "I just got out of detention. My classes are done for today, so you don't have to worry your pretty little head about me cutting one." his hands slid back into his pockets as he slouched back once more. Terrible posture as always. The moment he mentally recalled her initial statement, Yato hummed in thought and directed his focus onto the board once again. [break][break] "Huh. Who'd want that anyway?" his question had been carried in a low murmured tone before he glanced back over towards Elodie. "Well, ain't like I got anything to do right now. Want me to help you look?" a hand is then lifted up to bat about beside him, almost halfhearted dismissal, despite being genuinely interested in aiding her search. Or at least something to straighten out the situation. Detention, he said casually, as though it were a regular part of his day. She bristled at the idea that anyone would find themselves in detention. What a waste of time. Why not avoid it all together by carrying themselves in a manner appropriate for school? Did he really think it funny?

She fixed him an assessing look. The logical side of her brain was telling her to accept the offer. Two sets of eyes would be better than one and they could search more efficiently. Plus, he was the one who'd said he had nothing better to do with his time. This would be time well spent.

But on the flip side was the little voice in her head that always wanted to be contrarian. It was telling her she'd already accepted his help once. Regardless of whether or not she'd asked for it, he'd already done her a good deed, and she hadn't done anything to repay him since. Was it really acceptable for her to take his help again? It never sat well with her to be indebted to others.

"Fine," she said, handing him one of the notices she'd designed to pin up around the school. Right in the center was a photo of the alleged box, as it was last seen. With his height, she'd be able to forgo the step ladder she'd planned to tote around to reach the taller bulletin boards. She tucked the rest inside her bag and started to walk off, expecting him to follow.

Small talk never seemed to come naturally to her. Especially with near-strangers. Maybe they were a little more, given that she knew his name now. (So what if she'd combed through the school's yearbook to find it? That didn't mean anything.)

The next large bulletin board was just up ahead, near a wing full of classrooms. In hindsight, this was probably the direction Hayato had come from before he’d snuck up on her.

As expected, the board was an absolute mess, filled to the edges with posters advertising various clubs and teams. Recruitment was in full swing for the start of the school year. Her eyes scanned the board, seeking out a viable spot, before deciding that the Basketball team didn’t need an entire corner wallpapered with the same poster over and over. It wasn’t the most visible spot, but she didn’t want to remove the hard work put in by other student groups to keep their clubs alive.

”Up there will do,” she said, handing him another flyer before pointing at the corner just out of her reach. At least he was handy.

The next board required them to take a flight of stairs. Normally, she didn’t really mind the silence. A quiet setting gave her plenty of time to think and be productive. But something about the way Hayato dutifully followed her around made her want to fill it with… something.

The task itself wasn't necessarily difficult to begin with, and it wasn't like he felt any sort of urgency to be somewhere else or return to his dorm. It wasn't like he had a roommate just yet anyway. So instead, he opted to just kill time with a goody two-shoes. [break][break] A cute one, at that. [break][break] But he wasn't about to tell her that unless he wanted a death glare. Or worse. Whatever the case, the previous topic that he tried to cover up got brought back into the light. She pursed her lips. Just what sort of business was he involved in that he would assume without a second thought that she'd just dismiss him as a liar? What did that say about her? Certainly nothing good. What was almost more concerning was how he was fine with just leaving it be. What did that say about him?

”What makes you think I'd just assume the worst?” she asked, continuing to walk beside him without looking in his direction. It was just aloof enough for her to feign making small talk without seeming too invested in the actual answer. Or at least that was what she hoped. She didn’t want to pry in his personal matters. What good would knowing the finer details do anyways? But she just couldn't shake the feeling that what he was saying was clearly some sort of reflection on her as well.

Hayato couldn't blame her for feeling interested for one reason or another, but he really didn't want to get someone else involved in petty drama. The teen shifted in place and offered a short grunt of protest, but not without adding a glare to a nearby wall at the mere recollection. [break][break] "It's.." he trailed off his sentence before he moved over towards a flight of steps that led to the upper floors. Without giving a warning, a question, nothing, he grabbed onto Elodie's wrist in order to carefully guide her up the steps. He wasn't going to take no for an answer. The moment he reached the top floor, a door led out to the roof which normally remained closed for the sake of safety. [break][break] But luckily, they'd been working on various things, including treatment for leakage, thus, the off limits location wasn't so off limits today. At least not in Yato's book. The rustle of his clothes followed the second wind rushed through the opening of the door as he led them further to the edge of the building. [break][break] Not a word had been said until the two of them reached Yato's destination. That's when he released her wrist and dug into his pocket for something. He fished two items: a cigarette and a lighter. He pinched the butt of it to his mouth and covered the flame to light the tip. It took a couple of attempts, but he eventually managed to ignite it. [break][break] Smoke followed after he took a puff and slowly exhaled, "Got into a fight with a teacher. Threw a desk at him." he finally broke the silence, but kept his focus away from his current companion. He didn't want to see that judgemental face. Not yet. "He'd been.. harassing a friend of mine. No one believed her. Parents said she was making it up.. that she was doing it for attention. But I've seen it. Seen 'em do it. So I got fed up. Course, they ain't gonna believe me." he shrugged, then finally looked over at her as smoke drifted away from his nostrils once he exhaled.[break][break] "You're free to report me if you want, too." he gestured to the cigarette. She should have suspected something the moment they made the wrong turn. But she was too stunned to do more than make a little yelp of surprise before they wound up on the building rooftop.

Truth be told, she'd never been up here before. The roof was off limits, after all. There was a small thrill that danced down her spine at the thought as the took in the view. She grabbed at the railing, admiring the Panacea campus from this high up.

But the moment of slight awe was immediately shattered by the sight of the cigarette in Hayato's hand. Her mouth opened to protest, but the words never managed to come out. Not when the first thing he thought to say was that he'd assaulted school faculty.

Her brain couldn't quite wrap around it. It wasn't as though she didn't understand what throwing a desk entailed. She just couldn't fathom losing one's senses to the point of throwing furniture in the first place. It was even harder to picture Hayato—brusque and quiet as he was—losing his cool like that.

But his words, ambiguous as they were, left little to the imagination. He didn't have to describe what he saw for her to know. Her stomach twisted, coiling in uncomfortable knots. Worse still was the obnoxious way he held his cigarette—as though that was her biggest concern, knowing what she did now.

"You're incorrigible," she said, forcing out the words as she snatched the cigarette anyways. She held it in front of her, watching the way smoke trailed from the end. She couldn't understand the appeal. The smell was unpleasant, and she wrinkled her nose. Bitter, but honestly, no worse than the already nauseous way she felt.

It was strange, standing here in an prohibited area, holding prohibited contraband. She'd never broken so many rules in all her years at the academy. She must be out of her mind for this, but something about not understanding why Hayato would go out of his way to smoke made her hold it up to her own lips and inhale.

She didn't last more than a few seconds before she was coughing up a storm.

He'd always been the type to act first before weighing out the cons. Even if the cons were completely stacked against him in the end. This matter wasn't any different, and he'd very much agree with Elodie that he could've just done things differently. But no, he wasn't about to allow another person to be harassed by someone if he could help it. [break][break] Thus, he happily took the punishment in stride. At this point, he wasn't even surprised. He expected it, after all. But what he wasn't expecting had been the display that started to unfold right in front of him. He raised his brow the second his cigarette had been taken from his possession. Initially, he assumed he'd gain an earful because that seemed to be the road today had been going down on. That didn't, of course, come to pass at all and instead those eyes rose in surprise the second he took notice of the smoke intake. [break][break] A soft chuckle bubbled to the surface as he watched her choke right on the first try. "Now why'd you go on an pretend you're a vacuum?" he teased lightly, then reached over to pat her back gently a couple of times. He then used his free hand and guided it closer to her lips, all while his posture dipped to square closer to hers. His hand remained on the bottom of her spine as he guided her slowly, "You're supposed to take it in slowly. Here." Yato brought her hand over to his lips and didn't even bother taking the cigarette from her hold. [break][break] Instead, he offered a close up demonstration once his lips curled around the butt of the cigarette and slowly took in a breath through his nose. In doing so, his lungs were gradually filled before he pulled away and tilted his head off to one side. With the same smooth and slow actions, he exhaled in the same fashion in order to allow the light gray smoke to drift into the air beside them. He didn't necessarily took into consideration the closeness, let alone the tone his voice had taken, but he didn't mind it at all. [break][break] They were being casual, right? [break][break] So, with a small smile, he tipped his head back towards hers, practically towering over. "Maybe.. give it another try?" he purred out to her, all while rubbing his thumb gently against the spot it'd been resting up until then. All that she could think in that moment was why?

Why would anyone go out of their way to smoke when all she could feel inside her mouth was that acrid taste of smoke? The more she coughed, the worse it got. It was as though her lungs were screaming at her in protest.

She blinked rapidly, trying to blink away the tears. It felt ridiculous, getting teary-eyed over something like this, but she couldn’t control her body’s response in that moment. She focused instead on the feeling of that hand at her back, tethering her to some semblance of calm.

If she hadn’t been struggling to catch her breath, she would’ve made a noise of protest from the way he’d seemingly invaded her space. Instead, her eyes met his while he took another hit from the cigarette.

He made it look so damn easy.

She resented the fact that he’d obviously done this enough times to know what he was doing. For one, because that meant he’d subjected himself to this foul, godforsaken taste enough times to have grown accustomed to it. But also because she was ridiculously competitive and the fact that he could make it look so good made some small part of her want to learn to do it too. Like some irrevocable itch.

She was surely speaking to the devil. There was no other explanation as to why that dip in his voice was such a temptation. That hand against her back was coaxing her into something she knew could only be a misstep.

”Now why would I do that?” she murmured, though she lowered her lashes to look down at the cloying way the cigarette burned between her fingers. She’d always been a quick study. Surely she’d do better the second time. But the sound of the door squeaking open behind them made her freeze.
