| | | | The cool breeze fluttered the soft pink locks around her form as she messily scrawled within the confines of a notebook. The pink, glittery ink smoothed into letters, but her pen paused as she glanced back at the textbooks. However, with the words starting to compress and blur together, the siren instead reached for a clear plastic cup. Inside, swirls of colors from white to brown mixed together, topped with whipped cream and bits of chocolate. The iced mocha coffee—her second one—brought bliss to her taste buds as she took another sip. The drink and her half-eaten chocolate chip bagel were the only things getting her through this paper.
Despite the frustration of schoolwork, Verity was enjoying her time out. It was a nice change of pace from her recent daily routine. She’d even taken the time to dress up a little, wearing a nice pleated pink skirt with beige, white, and brown plaid, paired with a plain white collared shirt tucked in. She styled her hair in two Dutch braids down to the base of her neck before tying them into pigtails. The maiden loved her hair this way, though she didn’t always have the time to do it—it wasn’t easy working with the locks at the back of her head. Even with her minimal makeup, the whole look took only an hour and a half.
However, pampering herself wasn’t the goal of the day. She had an agreement to meet Seth and couldn’t stop the butterflies fluttering in her stomach. It was silly, really. If today was the day she’d get an answer to her proposition, she could deal with either outcome. If yes, they could quickly get to work. If no, she’d have to keep looking, which would be unfortunate. If she was lucky enough to get a yes, though, she’d probably have to come clean about a couple of things. It wasn’t anything bad—it just made her uncomfortable to talk about. But if they were to be partners, there were things he probably should know.
Trying to sigh away her thoughts, though it didn’t help one bit, she tilted her head back as the sun beat down on her skin, soaking up all that vitamin D. Verity thought it was a good choice to take a seat outside. He wouldn’t have to go inside to spot her, and she could buy herself a bit of time if he went in to order something. Work out the butterflies—or at least some of them—even if she couldn’t fully get rid of the nerves.

[attr="class","verde"] a yawn escaped his lips as he read the same page for what seemed like the seventh time. he had a set time he was supposed to meet up with verity. he hadn't forgotten about her offer. he hadn't been joking about how rusty he was. though as soon as he started his routine back up. it was as if he hadn't left the rink at all. of course there was till more training to be done, but he hadn't forgotten all his skills as he liked to exaggerate.
it had been a minute and it had been verity that scheduled the meet up. he closed the book and figured it was time for him to start heading out. he had told himself he would check up on some reading for his english class before having to head out, but that didn't go so well. he would just have to try again later.
he caught the bus heading to town and checked the time on his phone. he had planned to be there on time. not wanting to make her wait for his answer. he could of told her he was willing to give it a try over text, but maybe an in person conversation would be best. seeing as they probably would have to start coming up with some sort a schedule.
thought wasn't he getting a head of himself? she had mentioned when they were at the rink that she would have to see if they were compatible. if he hadn't been nervous before. now he was. what if he didn't make the cut? either way if he didn't he hoped that verity would find someone she could skate with.
when he reached the cafe he spotted verity pink hair. he waved at her before making his way over."hey, i'm going to go get something real quick, but my answer is yes."he told her with a smile before heading off to order the only thing he would drink off the menu. a hot chocolate.
he probably should have waited to tell her once he was back, but he didn't want her to wait any longer. after a few minutes he returned with a hot chocolate in had. taking a seat across from her. | | | | Lost in thought, the maiden did not take notice of Seth until he spoke to her. Even then, it took another moment until her brain understood what he had said. But by then, he was already off into the cafe. With this little extra time, the siren took a moment to sort through her thoughts. She pushed her pen and spiral notebook, stacking them on top of her textbook before sliding them to the side and dragging her bagel back in front of her. How would she even go about this? She bit her bottom lip and let out a shaky breath as Seth exited the building.
She did not speak right away, instead taking a nibble of the bagel, buying herself a bit more time. It wasn’t like her to stall; she took pride in herself—others might even call her arrogant—but he was going to find out sooner or later. She’d rather it come from her own lips instead of him finding out on the fly. Clearing her throat, she met his eyes. “Listen, before you give me your answer…” Well, he had already given her one, but she’d dismiss it if he changed his mind. “There is… something I should probably let you in on.” This shouldn’t be so hard, but it was. She knew it was more than just a physical scar for her, but she couldn’t help feeling ashamed.
Another gentle breeze blew her loose fringe into her face, but she didn’t move to push the locks away. “It doesn’t affect my skating. I’m one of the best.” Verity felt as if strangers on the street were staring at her, and she tried not to shift in her seat… though she wasn’t sure how successful she’d been. “...I—” She took a breath. “I have this pain problem.” Verity gave a small, awkward shrug. “You’ll see me pull out a little bright orange bottle if it gets bad.” Unable to meet his eyes, she looked away toward the sidewalk as she continued, “The pain tends to only flare up during the winter months.”
She took a deeper breath, her fingers tapping on the table and her right leg bouncing beneath the furniture. “It won’t get any worse than it is now,” she said. Well, probably. “The pain… it comes from a scar.” A very nasty and ugly one at that. It was rough to the touch and had a slight webbing design to it. Verity wouldn’t be surprised if people ran at the sight of it. “It’s on the length of my back.” She shrugged again, unable to offer anything more. “You’ll feel it if you still want to be partners.” The maiden struggled to turn back toward him, trying to read his reaction.

[attr="class","verde"] he his answer could have waited, but could you blame him? he was just so excited to get back on the ice and actually practice. not just him messing around on the ice, but get back into doing routines. he knew it was going to be way more work as a pair, but he was up for the challenge.
he waited in line and thankfully it wasn't super long. after getting his hot chocolate he made his way over to verity and sat down. he sipped his drink as he waited for her to say something. had she found someone else? was that why she was hesitating? again if that was the case he would be happy for her.
he was mid sip when she finally spoke. something he needed to know?"okay, what's up?"he asked softly as he set his cup of hot chocolate on the table. clearly something was bothering her. she had seen so outspoken and worry free when they had met on the ice. nevertheless seth stayed quiet and waited till she was ready.
when she spoke of pain his mind went to a possible injury. surely something couldn't have happened between the few times they had seen each other on the rink could it? again he waited for her to finish speaking before saying anything.
when she finally told him, he wasn't sure what exactly to say. he had a few questions come to mind. she had said it didn't affect her skating, but did it hurt if it was touched? especially if she had to take pain medication. there were times in pairs skaters had to hold onto their partners. would that cause her pain? or was she self-conscious about it?
he lifted the hot chocolate to his lips taking a sip before speaking."if it doesn't bother you, it won't bother me."clearly it bothered her. how many people had been in his position and said the same thing only to let her down? it was scary to be open like this. she had been avoiding his gaze when she was telling him about her scar. he didn't want to dismiss her concerns."i won't hurt you if i touch your back right?"the last thing he wanted was to cause her any pain or discomfort."i know you said it didn't affect your skating. i'm sorry, i'm not sure what to say, but honestly it doesn't change my mind. i want to give skating with you a shot. only if you want to of course."he offered her a smile.
he would go at her pace, this was definitely a hard subject to bring up, but he understood why she had to tell him. had she not sooner or later he probably would of noticed or like felt her scar at some point during their practice. | | | | Verity released a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding, though she supposed that might partly be her fault. She had been picky about who to pair up with—it couldn’t be just anyone. The few she had scouted, or who had scouted her and she’d considered, had turned her down. None of them had outright told her why, but it always seemed to be after they learned about her back. Sure, it probably wasn’t pleasant to touch, but it wasn’t something they could catch. Or maybe they’d wanted something romantic with her, and it turned them off. That was fine with her—she wasn’t interested in a partner who pursued her with that in mind anyway.
“It doesn’t bother me,” she lied, looking toward him. Of course it did… or maybe she was just hoping it didn’t. The scar seemed to haunt her, always a step behind, something she couldn’t shake loose. “No, you won’t hurt me if you touch it.” That much was true. The nerves there were damaged and didn’t respond to touch correctly. And even if they did, she would have gotten over it—or at least tried to. Nothing was going to stop her. Verity couldn’t, wouldn’t, let it.
She clasped her hands together, resting them in her lap as she leaned toward the table and closed her eyes in thought. It was quite a heavy, probably uncomfortable, topic to drop on someone—not just for her but for him too. She felt bad about it, but she just wanted to rip the bandage off. “Sorry to drop all of this on you,” she said, giving him a sheepish smile. “But I figured you’d find out as soon as we got on the ice together.” Well, she supposed they were already on the ice together, but this was different. “And… well, the sooner, the better?” She shrugged, even questioning herself. “At least, I think it’s better to let you know than to have you just figure it out.”
She was grateful he didn’t seem to want to dig any further—or perhaps he just hadn’t asked more questions yet. Either way, Verity was relieved enough to push through the uncomfortable topic and move on. “I’m glad you still want to give this a go.” She unhooked her hands and reached for her notebook, pulling the pen from the spiral. Flipping it open to a makeshift calendar, she revealed disfigured doodles of pumpkins—or were they ghosts? Either way, it didn’t matter. Instead of writing anything down, she looked toward him.
“I’m not sure how quickly you want to jump back in. You said you were rusty before?” She didn’t mind taking things slowly—it might even be for the best. “But I think we should probably put together a rough schedule for when we can meet up.” Her daily life was busy, so she couldn’t just drop everything and head over to practice. Still, she spent most evenings at the rink anyway, except for the occasional day off. “What days are good for you?” If needed, she could rearrange her plans..

[attr="class","verde"] he took a sip of his hot chocolate. how long had she been thinking about this. this wasn't an easy topic to discuss with anyone. he understood why she wanted to get it out of the way. it did make him wonder if this was the reason she didn't have a partner yet. again she had said it didn't affect her skating.
he nodded at her words."well that's good, i'm glad i won't be hurting you."though he couldn't help, but get the sense that maybe it did bother her even it if wasn't physically. was it the way she was perceived after people found out? he wasn't going to push her for anymore details.
"it's fine. really. at least his way i have time to process it."he said shaking his head at her apology. yes it was a lot to take in, but she was right it probably would have been more awkward to explain when they were on the ice. he also knew it probably would take them some time to build trust. just because he said he was fine with it. didn't automatically mean she believed him and he didn't expect her to. these things took time and that was fine with seth. it would just mean over time she would see that he really was there to skate.
he offered her a smile."of course. you seemed so excited. i think that excitement kinda rubbed off on me."it honestly did. he had already been excited to get back on the ice, but having an actual goal to work towards that was even better.
"oh for sure. i've actually been to the rink a few times already."he nodded."i mean i'm pretty much free whenever. i just have homework and stuff. so you tell me when you're free and i'm positive i can be there."he grinned.
