If he had done so, he'd know about the storm that had been announced for later that same evening. Of course, by the time his steps found themselves half way towards the store it became far too late. The rolling sound of thunder could be heard in the distance which, in turn, caused Hayato's brows to furrow. "Great." he muttered to himself, taking the time to adjust the jacket fastened around his waist. He only had planned to fetch a couple of snacks, but the light drizzle of rain told him his plans had change from one second to the next. [break][break] With a hurried step, he quickly made his way towards the store, only to be greeted by the automatic door and a chime to announce his arrival. The second he set both feet within the facility Hayato could hear the sound of rushing raindrops followed close behind. He took a glance towards the world past the glass window panes and stared at the sight of the outside world being drenched in a generous downpour. In the distance, he could even make out the silhouette of people rushing to find shelter, the same way he did, only to later disappear within the comfort of warm stores. [break][break] Yato pocketed his hands before he returned to his original task: snacks. Greeted by the various, colorful labels neatly stacked on the shelves, he skimmed along the ones he normally brought home. "Hm.. maybe I should bring 'rito some snacks, too." he mused to himself underneath his breath after passing by the pet section of the store. After he gathered a few items in a medium sized, plastic basket, Yato then made his way over towards the beverage section. The last bottle of soda pop could be seen standing in the middle of its corresponding section. [break][break] He considered himself lucky as he outstretched his hand to grab the fridge handle. However, to his surprise, his hand wasn't the only one that reached the aforementioned location, for a second hand settled on top of his own. A rather dainty one at that. Her mind had been in a tizzy trying to juggle the frankly ridiculous number of snacks and goodies her student council mates had requested—two bags of Zapp’s, a box of Tangos, four different flavors of VitaRains including specifically the Blue Hawaiian flavor… [break][break] Why was she tasked with preparing their meeting snacks anyways? She was almost certain it should have been King’s turn, but as with most things pertaining to their president, he somehow managed to slip his way out of the obligation. [break][break] If she hadn’t been so hyperaware of her surroundings, she might have missed the small murmur. The sound came, strangely, from above her, and she peered up to see the lanky figure towering beside her. He stared down at her as though she were some kind of nuisance. [break][break] Really, he was the one in her way, wasn’t he? [break][break] ”I do, actually,” she snipped back, releasing his hand so she could properly reach for the bottle instead.

He didn't want any problems. He didn't want any sort of altercation, yet now he stood right smack dab in the middle of one. An exasperated sigh left his lips as he watched the girl. She reached for the last bottle of the drink he'd been set on and, before she could take ahold of it, he ducked his hand and snagged it right underneath hers. [break][break] "See, normally I'd say ladies first. But your attitude really isn't helping your case." he snapped back, then pulled away with the drink in hand. Due to his absence, the door closed and, potentially, bumped the girl's arm in the process. Not with enough force to inflict any sort of serious injury, but enough to make her react. There had been countless of instances where Hayato allowed others to take whatever they desired, whatever they needed or saw fit to their liking. [break][break] However, there were some times where he simply didn't feel like it. Deep down, he'd been selfless with everyone around him, and perhaps some sick and twisted part of him desired to be selfish. Granted, there were those who tried to make him understand that being selfish is necessary on some instances, but.. his parents made him believe that doing so is more than a luxury. For now, he simply focused on grabbing a few more snacks, as well as some wet cat food for his little roommate. In doing so, he disregarded the girl completely. She could hardly believe what she was hearing. Her attitude? As though he hadn’t just snatched her bottle right out of her grasp? He was surely lying. Someone who truly espoused the belief of “ladies first” would never snub her this way, much less let the door close on her.

And then he had the audacity to just walk away! The nerve of him! She’d never met someone so rude. Her eyes flashed in his direction as she stalked up after him, intent on making her continued presence known.

That he'd be able to go back to his browsing for various items, including some things that Dorito probably would appreciate. At least he hoped. However, the sound of the female student next to him caught his attention once more. He registered her declaration as he raised a brow. [break][break] "Hm? Yeah?" his posture shifted, then propped his arm onto the shelf of the aisle beside him before he leaned in closer. "Didn't know your name was.. " he brought the plastic bottle closer to his face to read off one of the ingredients, " ... Sodium Benzoate. Guess it would make sense, since you're so salty about it." [break][break] A slight smirk tugged at the corner of his lips as he shoved the item back into his basket before he shifted to an upright stance. "Do us both a favor.. get something else. I got it first." his expression then shifted into a neutral one, that smile clearly short lived as his shoulder slouched back to display his disinterest. To his dismay, the storm that raged outside managed to hit just the right spot at the right time, giving Hayato a clear message that he'd been in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was then she saw the flash of lightning through the glass behind him, and she froze. She hardly heard the scream coming from a scant few feet away because of how her head spun.

No. Nonono, this couldn’t be happening. The loud roll of thunder made her seize up, her heart hammering from the sound. When had the storm turned this bad? Had she really been idling in the store for that long? The rain had only been a drizzle when she’d walked over. She hadn’t even brought an umbrella. If she’d known it’d become a full blown storm then she wouldn’t have—

Another peal of thunder reverberated close by, drowning out the sound of her basket crashing onto the floor. She backed herself into the nearby shelf, trying to shield herself away. Anything to get away from the flash of lightning that wouldn’t disappear even with her eyes shut tight. But in the darkness—or more likely her distress—she didn’t realize she was walking straight into the last person she’d want to see her so anxious.

She hadn't realized what was happening. The sound of blood rushing in her ears overwhelmed her senses and she was caught up just trying to make quick, uneven breaths. Wasn't this supposed to help? That'd been what she'd read: Breathe in, breathe out. Inhale, exhale. But every repetition only made her heart thump faster and she grew even more frustrated by how this mantra that was supposed to help calm her was only making her more unsettled.

She didn't hear his voice when he finally spoke so much as she felt it—a low rumble against her ear from the way she was burrowed in his chest. It was then that she became aware of the way his chest rose and fell. His breathing was slow, so unlike her own. Something about the even cadence of his voice made it easy to latch onto.

Over time, her breathing settled to match his. In. Out. In. Out. She didn't know how long they stood there like this, but with each long exhale, she became ever more cognizant of the fact that she was pressed up against a near stranger.

At first, she was mortified. What the hell was he doing? When had he gone and embraced her? Was he insane? Or worse, some kind of pervert? And what was she doing, just standing here, cowering like this?

Then she tried to rationalize everything. Clearly this had been some sort of mistake. It was a panic response. She hadn't been in her right mind.

But that didn't exactly explain his behavior. He had no obligation to help her like this. That's what he was doing right? Helping? God, she sure as hell hoped he'd been well-intentioned, because otherwise...

Try as she might, she couldn’t fight the flush on her face. Worse still, he chose that moment to step away from her. She blinked several times in quick succession, trying to adjust to the harsh fluorescent lights in the store again. And with her coloring, she didn’t stand a chance in hell of concealing the way she blushed.

Should she really be insulting someone who’d just helped her through a panic attack? Even she had enough humility to be embarrassed about the way she was acting, but she couldn’t help it. It wasn’t her most graceful escape, but the evening air felt cool against her ruddy cheeks. Though she wasn’t going to be forgetting the night’s events anytime soon, at least the tips of her ears would stop feeling so warm. For that, she was grateful for the changing season.
