Several weeks after the start of the semester wasn't the best time to be moving in, but everyone Kitt had run into so far had been friendly and welcoming. The administration had assured their grandparents repeatedly that incidents of bullying were few and far between, and there were a number of students who currently had no roommate but displayed an amiable disposition. Papa Gerald had recognized the name of one of the families on the list and asserted that any room but theirs was fine. Kitt had no idea what that was about.
[break][break]With only one overly stuffed messenger bag balanced on top of the large rolling suitcase behind them, Kitt suspected from the looks they were getting that they had maybe packed less than they should have. Home was so close, though, and they were so used to occupying a small space, that they weren't actually particularly worried. It was more an observation, careful and thoughtful as they made their way up into the dorms. Their room was on the ground floor, a little slip of paper giving the number. Kestrel mumbled the directions they'd been given under their breath until they finally reached the right place.

Okay, so floor space was...a commodity. Like, Kitt couldn't exactly blame someone for sprawling out to fill the space available, it wasn't like they were the type who'd always kept their things neat and tidy when they weren't sharing a hospital room, but by necessity they'd had to grow up with a little more organization than was on display before them. Even at their messiest at home, Kitt had yet to reach this level. This? This was impressive.
[break][break]Was it possible to walk in here? Good lord, what was that boy wearing? Kitt didn't give the sweatpants a judgemental look. They had nothing against them. Really. "Uh, yeah. Call me Kitt." They would offer a hand, but they were a little too busy scanning the floor to even make eye contact, glancing up at the indication of their 'side' though they knew the bed "Mads" wasn't laying on himself was probably meant for them.
[break][break]"This is my only bag, so...uhm. Do you wanna move...some stuff?" Didn't really need help getting it across the room, at least, although maybe picking it up onto the bed when it was as full as it was would be a trial. They'd cross that bridge when they got there.

There was still a little bit of wading through to do while Mads--nickname, right? That was a weird thing to call a kid even if they were fully aware that they were in no place to judge, but Kitt was pretty sure the name that'd been read out to them started with 'mad', so a nickname made sense--moved his stuff. Kitt did sort of pause to stare when he moved the instrument, because it looked huge and heavy and they hadn't really seen anything that might be classified as a 'feat of strength' since before their prolonged hospital stay. Uncle Dean liked to work out, but he was careful about his limits, and it was mostly so he'd cut an intimidating figure in a board room, so his weights were smaller.
[break][break]Then they re-focused, carefully tugging the suitcase toward the bed. It was a lot harder to move without a clear floor, and they really didn't want to strain themself and have to see the nurse on literally the first day back in school, so before it became an issue they just. Left the suitcase where it was and grabbed the messenger bag, instead. "Thanks, man."
[break][break]They were gonna have to do so much cleaning before they could fully unpack. Hopefully Mads would help, though? Kitt glanced over their shoulder at him as they dumped the messenger bag out, a number of different notebooks and a tablet tumbling out across the sheets alongside the rattling clatter of a gallon ziploc full of pill bottles. They were ready to ask if maybe the first 'roomie bonding' activity could be...making room for the roomie, but they were distracted by the flash of familiarity. "Oh, wait, didn't we hang out last year?"

One last shake and the slim wooden case containing their embroidery/sewing kit clattered out on top of everything else, firmly latched. Papa Gerald had taken up wood-working as one of his retirement hobbies, and the neatly packed little sections were something Kitt was especially pleased with. The top even had a woodburned picture of Sunshine, a little crudely done but depicting the horse's characteristic snarl in a very personal way. They flipped it over and set it aside after running quick fingers over it, beginning to sort through things even as they glanced up. That was...kind of a back-handed compliment, but it didn't look like the other boy meant it to be, and if they were going to be sharing a room for the year Kitt would prefer to err on the side of ignorance over malice. "Oh, thanks. I've picked up my weight training a little bit, so I could ride Sunshine again."
[break][break]Kitt distracted themself with stacking the notebooks and then unzipping the bag, starting to sort out bottles onto the nightstand next to their bed. Then they realized it had a bunch of stuff on top of it, and tentatively opened the drawer instead. Fortunately, that was empty; in the medications went, carefully lined up with the labels facing as best they could manage. They did pause at Mads' response, though, turning more fully to look at him and then flinching away a little from the space-invasion. It wasn't really close, but they weren't used to it--contagions in the hospital were the best advocate for social distancing ever. Confusion marred their brow as they looked back, opening their mouth to assure their certainty, but something made them pause.
[break][break]They had just enrolled; they remembered--thought they remembered--meeting this boy in the hospital, some time last year. Not a patient himself, but a frequent visitor--one who'd occasionally joined Kitt and the few others around their age whenever the person he was visiting was unavailable for one reason or another. There were a number of reasons for someone to visit the hospital that frequently, and fewer for them to stop as abruptly as he had. Kitt decided discretion was the better part of valor; maybe they were mistaken, anyway. Yet they couldn't quite bring themself to lie. "From outside school, I meant. I'm probably mistaken, though; maybe you have one of those faces."
[break][break]Casually turning back toward the bed, they squinted and then started going through the other pockets of the messenger bag, pulling out a packet of different sized fine-liners, a pencil case, a set of metallic markers, and the little double-breasted admiral's jacket they'd been working on for one of their dolls, deep blue fabric with carefully embroidered silver accents and little embossed silver buttons pinned onto a handheld mannequin. The needle, still threaded, was deeply embedded through the neckline, to prevent any unfortunate incidents. Kitt tried to think of more conversation starters before they badgered Mads into helping them clean the room up. "You, uh, you've been here a while, right? Are you in any clubs...?"

Everyone had their special pieces that brought joy or nostalgia or were just treasured. Mads was no different in that regard. But the engraved picture of a snarling… dog? cat? made the Eastwood boy grin broad enough to display his dimples. Whatever it was, seemed to be important, and homemade. (Could’ve been that antique from a great-relative, just like his from Earl. Mads was coping a bit much, but he sensed it held that weight to it.) [break][break]‘Cept the mention of weight training grasped his attention—a kid in a candy store. “Yeah? That’s cool, man. Maybe we could go together sometime.” It felt right to offer, considering he’d sneak out to do so. Boxing was sort of his “me time”, but he did more in the gym than just that. Plus, it’d give him an extra excuse to hang around Kitt in different settings—see who his roomie really was, considering they’d be occupying the same space for the foreseeable future. [break][break]Regardless, it’s an invitation that could go in one ear and out the other, because Mads wanted to jog this kid’s memory, see if he truly knew him or if it was a case of mistaken identity. He got around, sure, and maybe there was a moment in time where his adventures outside of school with other pals could’ve led him to meeting the Combs and striking up enough of a memorable conversation (aw), but he just… couldn’t put his finger on it. Can’t say I really remember and I’m usually good with faces, but,” Mads offered a shrug of his shoulders while Kitt’s attention was still firmly on him. “We’ll make new memories, or something. It’s good to meet you.” This is where a handshake is either too casual or too formal. Kitt kind of made up Mads’ mind on it anyway, because he’s back to focusing on unpacking. Most of it now seemed to be art supplies. Mads was no artist himself—a stick figure was about as good as he could do, and a crude one at that. He does respect someone willing to dive into hours spent creating with their own hands though. Music wasn’t too far off from it, right? The offer of shared gym time earned sort of an amiable shrugging nod, but no more. It'd probably be good to make a friend who could keep an eye on them there, in case they pushed too far--they were pretty prone to doing that, and their grandparents would not be impressed if they didn't try to look out for it here. Kitt really didn't want to go back to homeschooling; they were so, so tired of the isolation involved. Memories of elementary school were perhaps gilded in their mind, but the opportunity to find out for themself was too good to pass up, no matter how anxious they were about it. It was why, even with the deliberately--forcibly--casual way they continued keeping their focus on more than just the conversation, most of Kitt's attention was in fact very firmly on Mads.

Listen, dolls and Mads were a fine line. It was probably one of the few objects that actually kind of bothered him somewhere down the road. He blamed the horror movies that his actual uncle Carter liked to show them. Harper ate that shit up. Mads? Trauma. Doll related. These ones did not look like the barely held together dolls of horror movies, or the ones with glass eyes resting on a shelf ready to spring to life at a moment's notice. But it still left Mads side-eyeing them longer than was probably… appropriate. [break][break]Kitt just met him though and he could totally play this off as reasonably interested in what his new roommate’s hobbies were, right? [break][break] “So you make people sized clothes, too?” Mads asked—twitchy fingers wanted to feel the texture of the fabric of the doll’s clothes closest to him. Instead, he opted for safe distance away and trotted back to his bed to plop his butt down on. He leaned back on his arms, but kept propped up enough he could keep an eye on what Kitt was up to. “Is fashion designer what you want to be later in life?” The Eastwood continued to prod. If only because he hoped the answer wasn’t strictly doll-cloth-designer. Maybe he could convince him to make clothes for… I dunno, beanie babies instead? Stuffed animals deserved to be warm, too! Unloading the suitcase next revealed said doll collection for their roommate's judging eyes. Maybe not so judging, but--no, no definitely judging. Kitt wasn't sure if it was a good kind or a bad kind, but Mads was definitely watching as they laid their "little helpers" out on the bed. First their vinyl darling, all 60cm wrapped in a forest green Victorian-era dress that was as accurate to the 1839 fashion report as they'd been able to make it. Another made of cheaper plastic, about half as tall at only 32cm with more exaggerated features and curves and a larger head. That one was wrapped in an outfit from Free, the carefully structured leggings and tunic of the Archer class complete with the signature class hairstyle and a little bow. Then was a more standard Barbie-sized and proportioned doll, set aside next to the cloth dressform they'd pulled out earlier, showing that it was dressed in a much-simplified version of the Admiral outfit they'd been scaling up. The next two that came out of the suitcase were both cloth dolls. The smaller one was still nearly a foot tall, and Kitt had dressed it up in a version of the PA school uniform with the green accents of a freshman, completed with a jaunty little cap that they'd taken way too much time learning how to shape leather for. Embroidered facial features grinned merrily under the brim as it was set up toward the head of the bed. The larger cloth doll was actually a bear, creamy cotton fabric embossed with light swirling patterns replacing faux fur. The bear was the size of a toddler, with lanky limbs and velvety pink paw pads and nose, wearing what Kitt still considered their current masterpiece; a red ballgown with a dropped neckline and a ruffling waterfall skirt, dozens of applique flowers making the hem look like a bouquet of roses. Granny Henri had threatened to steal her when she first saw it. The bear got pride of place on the pillow for now.
[break][break]So you make people sized clothes, too? Kitt raised a hand, wobbling it back and forth in a kinda motion. "I really want to, but it was hard before--you need more space for that kind of thing, and I had to get used to working mostly in my lap." The table that had been put in their room in their grandparent's house for sewing projects had been enough to make them cry. They had started on making a jacket for themself, but it hadn't gone well; angles were a lot harder to work with on a life-size scale than they'd expected. "I wouldn't mind doing that, though--what I'm really interested in is, uh..." Wait, was that too much information? Were they about to drive away a potential friend going on a rant about historical tailoring methods and how poorly archived this absolutely crucial bit of their culture was? They hesitated, and ultimately decided against speaking. "Nevermind, it's stupid."
[break][break]Quickly moving on, Kitt pulled out the little wooden box that served as their doll wardrobe and promptly shoved it under the bed, turning their attention to the closet doors. Thankfully empty; it was easy enough to start unpacking everything else and just shove it in there for now. "Yeah, we got Sunshine settled in first--I only got to see the main stable and the dressage ring, though. Is there more?" They assumed there was; the campus was huge. They were both anticipating and dreading learning their way around.
