| | | | A cool breeze caused her pink locks to flutter around her as the sun slowly began to hide behind the horizon. The evening cast a light orange glow upon the siren as the dragging of her feet carried her back to academy grounds. It had been a long day for the maiden, and she wanted nothing more than to strip down to her skivvies and faceplant into her pillow. After finishing her daily classes, pushing her limits on the ice, and then making a mad dash to work, Verity didn’t have much more left in her... well, maybe enough to stop at a bakery on her way home.
With that thought in mind, the young lady moved in a new direction, but she stopped in her tracks when she noticed a low meow. While most people either didn’t catch the sound or ignored it, Verity instead followed it down an alley in the direction the noise came from. It took her a second, and another meow, to spot what she guessed was a kitten. The animal looked very much like a stray, covered in muck—so much so that she doubted the little creature could see out of its eyes. This made the human girl frown. “Sweet baby, you must be terrified.” Slowly, she got down on her knees, careful not to flash anyone looking down the alley, as she outstretched her fingertips to the little beast.
With her free hand, she slowly unzipped her bag, groping for her pink sports bottle. Verity had refilled it before she left work. However, before she could do anything with the water inside, she needed to get the kitten within her grasp. So, the maiden spoke sweet nothings to the animal, coaxing it into her arms. It was slow, but once a rough lick touched her hand, Verity scooped up the cat. It could only give a weak meow in protest.
Not wanting to cause it much stress, Verity set the cat on her lap, not caring about how it dirtied her skirt. Instead, she gently lifted the cat’s head and, seeing now that it was a little girl, poured water over the mucky, matted fur while she gently massaged it away. Verity’s work paid off as light blue eyes looked up at her. She was about to offer the kitten a bit of water but stopped, tilting her head. Was the kitten old enough to drink water? She looked like she was, but Verity didn’t want to make a mistake.

They'd been having more seizures lately, which only added to the stress they felt in sort of a vicious self-fulfilling cycle. Having their grandparent's house close enough to the academy that they could visit in the evenings without risking a curfew break was more of a relief than Kitt had realized it would be, though, and they were incredibly grateful. Sometimes, all they really needed to make it through another day and remember why they wanted to go to school so badly was a hug, and Granny Henri was always good at giving them. She'd spent the evening reminding Kitt that they had expected fluctuations, and that feeling a little worse right now didn't mean they were relapsing. It had been exactly what they needed to hear.
They had decided to stop in somewhere on their way back to the dorms, just to get a little treat as their grandparents had both suggested to make up for a hard day. The walk to the bakery was always a peaceful one, though before they reached their destination the sound of...something down one of the alleyways caught their attention instead.
[break][break]Hesitating on the sidewalk for a moment, Kitt squinted into the darkness until they spotted the crouching figure there. Pink skirt dangerously close to the muck of the alley, someone who looked otherwise really well put together--Kitt thought they recognized her from around school, actually? Though they had no idea what she was doing over there, the tiny meows just a little too quiet for Kitt to make out clearly, they assumed she had been speaking. With the way she was crouched down it was hard to see anything but the water bottle in one hand, and concern welled up in their chest.
[break][break]Kitt scuffed one shoe along the ground as they moved a bit closer, deciding to call out. "Excuse me? Do you need help?"

| | | | With the speed of an athlete, the siren expertly stood from her position, pulling the kitten close to her chest with one hand. Her ears had picked up someone approaching behind her, and she definitely didn’t like the idea of a stranger at her back. Twisting on her foot, she spun around to come face-to-face with… a boy? She blinked in confusion, taking a step back as his words registered in her brain. “… Need help?” Again, she blinked, then glanced down at the kitten… who comically looked back up at her. Verity liked to think the little creature was just as confused as she was.
Why was he down a creepy alley? Then again, he could probably ask the same of her…
“How old do you think she is?” Verity asked, lifting the cat slightly as it let out a tiny meow, before settling it back against her chest. “Old enough to have water?” She didn’t know the first thing about animals. Even with her very obvious obsession with rabbits, she’d never been in a position to own one. Nor would her aunt ever want one in the house. Which was probably for the best—it would’ve been just as miserable as she’d been in that house. The pink-haired girl wouldn’t wish that on anyone. “I’m afraid I don’t know much about cats,” she admitted sheepishly, her thick Southern twang coloring her words.
She opened her mouth to speak again but then narrowed her eyes at him slightly… Should she be trusting him like this? She leaned towards the side, casting a quick glance at the sidewalk. She hummed softly, her thin lips pursed. Well, if anything, she was quick on her feet. She bet she could outrun him if she managed to squeeze past. Or she could always scream; boys tended to like coming to the rescue of a pretty girl. Verity looked back at him warily. “Who are you?”

The same as they would do for a feral cat, really, and as she finished turning around they finally caught sight of what must be the source for the noise that had stopped them in the first place. When the maybe-classmate asked her first two questions, Kitt didn't hesitate to take a few steps closer, autumnal skirt swishing around the tops of their boots. Kitt still didn't get too close, though, mindful of personal space as they tried to determine how much kitten was under all that muck. "I couldn't say for sure, but I think she probably is for a little bit." Kestrel loved cats, and one of the hospital programs had frequently brought in kittens and puppies for the kid's ward to play with for a few hours, so they even had a tiny bit of hands-on experience. "I'm afraid I don't know much about cats."
[break][break]"I know a little, but there's a cat cafe nearby that could probably help, too." Especially as her stance shifted and she started eyeing them warily, Kitt assumed that coming closer or trying to offer continued assistance wouldn't be taken well, though the next, rather pointed question made them jump a little. "Oh, right! Sorry--I'm Kestrel. Kitt, I mean--I think we've got some classes together at the academy?" Was actually fairly positive, now that she'd turned around--a lot of people around the school admired her beauty, it was kind of hard to miss her even out in the wilds, so to speak. That didn't stop the end of their statement lilting up into a question, and they shifted their feet a little nervously, tugging on one long braid. "I heard something as I was passing by and saw you crouched over here, so I wanted to make sure everything was okay."

| | | | Verity rubbed circles into the top of the kitten’s head as she listened to the other, who claimed to also be a student at Panacea Academy. It was entirely possible, of course. However, unless she’d had a conversation with someone, it was unlikely she’d remember them. She had no clue who Kitt was. While she recognized a few names from rumors haunting the halls, she hadn’t heard one about Kitt. It didn’t help that, as soon as classes ended, she’d rush out of the room.
She snapped out of her thoughts as the other took a few steps closer, causing her to take a half-step back. Verity had once been told by her old coach, “Never put yourself in a situation that could cause you trouble.” She couldn’t help but think this might be one of those times. She bit her lip, deciding to keep testing the waters, but the moment she sensed danger, she’d bolt. After all, not everyone was nice, and she’d dealt with enough of those types to last her at least two lifetimes.
The kitten’s meowing brought Verity’s attention back to it. If it was barely old enough to have water, shouldn’t the mother cat be around somewhere? She didn’t want to take it away if the mother was nearby. But she also didn’t want to leave the kitten if it had been abandoned. It happens, especially if the kitten is as weak as it seems. What was the best move here…?
Verity sighed. “Kitt, was it?” She resisted the temptation to ask to see his school ID, though she nearly did. Instead, she eyed him suspiciously and asked, “cat café, eh?" …eh? She is turning into a true Canadian, “where at?” If Kitt wanted to lead her there, that was fine—as long as she walked in the back. There was no way she was leaving her back unguarded.
