We're gonna fly away [attr="class","prism-onebody"]  Due to making some more friends as of recently, Penny had decided that maybe it would be a good time to celebrate. The weather was nice, and she had explored around the campus to find the best possible spot to lay a nice blanket. She had spent a long time making her own picnic blanket, getting dark green thread so that it looked like a thick carpet of forest grass. She had added pops of red and white throughout, for the appearance of a few mushrooms here and there. Like a real forest! Or at least the ones in her favorite picture books growing up. She had worked on it for a real long time too, making sure it'd withstand some abuse as well without fraying immediately. She had spent all morning preparing the food to go in the baskets, whether it was made by herself or purchased. Slipped in with napkins, plastic silverware, and paper plates were a variety of tasty options. Egg salad that she had with bread to place it in a sandwich form if desired, some potato salad she had also whipped together herself, and a jar of manga salsa with some dipping tortilla chips of course. She added a container of unopened pepper hummus as well, as well as some carefully selected fruits. Some oranges, blackberries, acai berries, and peaches were all placed in a little fruit bowl with a lid. Making sure the thick woven straw basket was lined after placing everything in, she had the blanket over the other shoulder. Making her way out of her dorm room and more towards the commons, she slipped her phone out of her pocket. She sent her dad a text where she wanted to meet up, so they could go pick a nice spot out together. She had foregone baking dessert this time around, figuring that it would be okay with the small variety she had gone with this time. Besides, fruit was sweet right? Preparations began weeks in advance for the picnic between him and his daughter. Between the other commissions, Warren accomplished some woodwork. An organizer with shelves and vertical inlets for binders, duotangs or books. On the sides and back were engravings of a fairytale forest with unicorns, fairies and other mythical woodland creatures. Over the forest was a large dragon, wings outstretched in flight and its neck elongated. One of the corners where the vertical dividers rose above the others, was a tall tower stretching high and textured to be shaped with little stones. There was no colouring to the white oak to give Penny options.

There were endless items Penelope created on her own, but occasionally Warren would make her something special. They were a small family, but capable of crafting and DIY. The specialized wood project was placed in a box with padding and wrapped in nondescript wrapping paper. Inside a small lunch kit was what Warren brought from home. There was a sandwich and a small salad with a fork down the side and a water bottle stationed atop it. Beside it was a small bag of plain chips, nothing particularly special. Once the bell rang and the text message came through, the large man was off.

The metalworking teacher headed to the assigned meeting place, the long strap of his lunch kit cooler on his shoulder. Finding his daughter was an easy task. While Penny looked similar to her mother, the little girl received her father’s intense height. A mere 15 and Penny was probably taller than a majority of the kids in her class. However, Warren was equally as noticeable being among the tallest teachers. He noticed the young girl with a blanket rolled on her shoulder, short-white hair and her infamous fairytale. The tall man waved as he approached, a broad grin stretching across his face.

"Well, little lady, are you ready for the picnic?" Warren said, a slight playfulness in his tone. "I also have something for you, Penny... I know it's not your birthday, but when I think of something, you know what happens."

A chuckle rumbled from Warren's chest after those words. It was common for the crafter to get caught up in a thought and find himself creating something. There were incidents where his gifts could not be appreciated due to lack of need, but he considered it practice. However, the gift could wait until after they found a place to settle down and eat lunch.

We're gonna fly away [attr="class","prism-onebody"] Her height gave her an easy vantage point when it came to meeting people, being able to see them easier than some of her shorter peers. Even if she didn't pick them out of the crowd first - well she'd definitely stand out enough to be located with ease. Between the striking platinum of her hair and the usual vibrant rose red of her favored dress, there was even more to make her a contrast even beyond her height. Her eyes were caught by her father giving her a wave, and she bounced up and down in place as she enthusiastically returned the wave. She bounded over to greet him and properly start to look for a spot, her aquamarine eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. [break][break] "Papa, I even made this blanket myself! Though, you probably won't be able to see it until we set it down in our spot." Calling him Papa was really something she never shook as she aged. She knew he never really minded, a lingering reminder to others how close the little family truly was. Here and there Penny would often be reminded of how lucky she was this way, as often she heard other students speaking of difficulties with or even resentment of their own families. She could understand just a little, especially when her thoughts would go to her mother. '"Awe a present? I can't wait to see it."[break][break] She lead the way towards the vibrant lawn in the distance, knowing there was a place in the sun but close enough to a big ole tree that they could move into the shade if needed. After casting her gaze around and considering spots, she glanced at her father for approval or not for the one near the tree. Once she got the okay she would shift her weight, pull the blanket off of her shoulder and shake it out before setting it onto the grass. Making sure none of it was curled or still folded, she then placed the woven wicker basket in the center. Fatherhood, initially, was a development that was difficult to grasp. When it occurred, Warren himself was merely a child who stumbled his way through a series of bad but not regretted, decisions. However, those difficult days paid off when the father gained the opportunity to see his beautiful daughter. The gentle giant was only in his early 30s and it felt Penelope was already grown up in a lot of ways. Young, but learning to take care of herself, and Panacea Academy was assisting in promoting that. Furthermore, his daughter earned her place at Panacea Academy rather than have her grandparents fund it; but they benevolently offered and would have should her grades had not earned her spot.

How could he not be proud? Despite Warren perhaps not being ready for a child at that young, vulnerable age, he adored Penny. There was plenty he was unable to participate in, but the tall man held no regrets.

"Sounds like you will have to show me it then," Warren chuckled out. "And of course. I think you will like it."

Together, the pair set out for a father-daughter lunch picnic. The large man followed behind his daughter, golden eyes searching for possible locations... but it appeared Penny had somewhere in mind. As they reached the sunny grass patch with an oak for shade. Placing the lunch kit and present to the side, Warren helped his daughter with unfurling the blanket. The man's thumb felt the texturing of the blanket and as it was revealed, Warren began admiring the design and craftsmanship.

"Well done, Penny! It's a beautiful work," Warren's voice boomingly commended.

The brunette fetched the lunch kit, placing it beside the wicker basket and settling down beside his daughter. He unzipped the lunch kit, sorting through what he brought for lunch, gradually and steadily.

"School been treating you well, Penny?" He asked casually as they everything up.

It appeared Penelope had thought more about supplies, such as plates and forks. It brought a little bit of what Warren brought to shame, but thankfully, he could always bring his daughter additional treats. The benefits of working at the school his daughter attended and lived on the campus of was still being able to visit consistently and hand off anything. Once settled, Warren grabbed the gift and settled between them, gesturing for Penny to go ahead and open it.

We're gonna fly away [attr="class","prism-onebody"] Napkins were placed near the basket on the side where both could easily reach, and she portioned out the plates and plastic silverware. Had she picked good things? She placed out the fruit bowl and opened the lid a bit to show the ones she had packed within, taking a peach and a hanfdul of blackberries for her own plate. Next was the container of potato salad, and then the chips and mango salsa. Next the hummus which she had forgotten to bring it's own dipping pretzels..., oh well, they could use the tortilla chips for that as well. She wasn't in the mood for it just yet herself anyways, so she finally slid out the last container of home-made egg salad and the load of bread she had added just in case. [break][break] "Thank you, Papa! I was inspired by that one cartoon about the faerie forest." She beamed as she had finished setting everything out, a small but nice spread of things to pick from. She added some of the egg salad to a piece of the bread, folding it over itself to make a tiny sandwich and put it on her plate with the fruit. She hummed a bit as he asked about school, smiling to herself as she pondered over recent events. "Yeah. I've been doing a lot of stuff with Adara lately. She was already thinking of how it would look filled with binders full of assignments, and her most treasured fairytales. Her hand moved to the scales of the dragon, imagining the stories of the fearsome fire-breathing lizards. She carefully set it to the side, away from all the food so she didn't dare get it dirty. Calloused hands ferried items from the lunch kit, setting them around the blanket. The top-placed water bottle settled first as he gradually settled his lunch on the blanket. A relatively simple and healthy lunch that required little preparation beforehand... He figured it would be easier for a picnic setting and provide time to prepare Penny's gift for coming along. Everything settled out, and the brunette's attention shifted to his daughter and her preparations. It remained there briefly before further admiring the blanket, running fingers over the soft texture.

Happily, he listened to Penny talk about the new school year's happenings. His daughter mentioned her friend along with an activity they had been enjoying... It made the brunette smile broadly as she spoke about her time at Panacea Academy. There was ease in knowing Penny had friends and was having fun.

"I'm glad you and Adara are having fun," Warren cheerfully responded. "Oh, and remember! If you two ever need to be picked up, just call. Okay, Penny?"

As a father, Warren constantly reminded his daughter how she could always contact him if something happened. There were endless horror stories about instances where parents were not contacted because the child worried about trouble and ended up injured or worse... Quietly, he watched as Penny happily opened her gift. The young girl appeared pleased with the shelving and dividing pieces for her dorm desk. He spent hours carving it and carefully working on the wood pieces and nailing them together... Woodworking took a lot of time, but Warren enjoyed every second of it.

After the question, he popped open the salad container and began mixing the dressing and prepping. The sandwich and chips were placed beside it. Despite the plates and forks, Warren worked automatically, taking half of the sandwich and leaving the other inside the baggie. Slowly, he began eating, taking his time to savour a lunch with his daughter.

Thankfully we haven't run into any problems we needed to be picked up from." She knew that sometimes things happened like potential kidnappings, or stories of people attempting to follow people home. Thankfully she hasn't really heard of anything like that recently, and especially not to one of the students. She took a bite to her weird folded sandwich, and the fact she had overstuffed it made more than expected to gush out when she bit the bread. A few pieces plopped out of the bread and onto the plate, and she was thankful again she had thought to bring paper plates. [break][break] She eyed the now salad covered berries with a tiny frown, then glanced back at her father as he spoke. "It's perfect! I can tell you put so much love into it for me." She ate some more of her sandwich in dainty bites, eventually finishing it. She moved onto the berries that had gotten salad on them, eating them with a spoon instead of with her hands now that they were a bit sticky. Next came the peaches, carefully dicing it with a plastic fork. "Run into any troublesome students yet? I might try to behave, but I know not everyone cares to." There were many reasons why a fellow student may act out, even if she couldn't fathom being troublesome herself. [break][break] She has also heard stories of theft and bullying among the student populace, but thankfully Penny has been spared from these things so far. She briefly wondered if she should ask Adara if she had any troubles or seen anything herself, but considered that if she had been bullied that it may be a sensitive subject. Relief flooded through him at her confirmation. Fatherly worries were natural, but ample communication with Penelope meant ensuring comfort if contacting him was necessary... This was amplified by the fact there was a chance Penny would be driving or potentially had friends with the means. Transportation meant the beginning of typical teenage events at a higher rate. From parties to smaller outings, anything was becoming hauntingly possible. While Penny would always be Warren's little girl, she would inevitably grow up and start making her own decisions, good or bad.

The thought was terrifying, but allowing its happening was a necessity. Through everything, he could provide guidance to the young girl and assist where possible. Overall, he wanted to be available whenever his daughter needed him. Ease arrived via his daughter's gratitude over Warren's handcrafted gift. The giant metalworking teacher favoured her with a broad smile; it was hard not to smile at his daughter.

"Perfect!" He echoed with a laugh. "I was aiming for good at least, sounds like I nailed it."

There was a teasing tone in his words; an attempt at a not-so-great joke in response to his daughter's words. From the basket, a serviette was grabbed and unfolded over Warren's lap. Why had he not taken the plates? There was no reason in particular... rather it was more of a mystery. The first bite was taken when Penny asked about troublesome students. The large man managed a shrug as he thought back to the classes he taught in those beginning days.

"So far, so good," Warren said once he swallowed. "Been a lot of safety drilling and making sure they understand the materials... real test is always the workshop and seeing if anyone will be banished!"

The metalworking teacher shifted his voice as he said 'banished', making one reminiscent of a typical fantasy crypt keeper booting someone out... However, the sentiment possessed truth in it. Students who could not learn to operate responsibly in the workshop would be sat down with for conversation and consistent offences meant Warren taking steps to have the student removed and the elective switched. There needed to be respect for safety in an environment with dangerous machines.

He was about to take another bite and a sip of water when Penny asked a question that hung in the air. Suspended between as he processed the whole meaning of the question. Child & Family Services existed for a reason, for those kids who had parents who could not care for them… A place Penny would have ended up if Warren had not taken the brunt of parenthood after Marie left. A slow exhale escaped Warren’s lips as he gathered his words.

“Well, sweetheart, sadly that is the case… but that’s why we have organizations to try and help it, right?” Warren began, his tone gentle. “Is there a reason you have been thinking of this recently?”

There was a limit to how much a father could be involved in the world of their children. Inevitably, they would have secrets, Warren knew he had plenty, and worlds of their own. Regardless, if someone Penny knew was in harm’s way, a plan could be made… but Warren was a mandated reporter… All teachers were and if abuse was suspected, he had a duty to uphold.

"When don't things turn out good Papa?" In her eyes at least, her beloved parent was a master craftsman. Maybe it was the adoration and attachment she felt, or maybe it was the rose-tinted goggles that often clouded the realities of youths. Either way it wasn't like it mattered that much, it was a belief that was ultimately harmless in the grand scheme of things. Who could it possibly hurt? She nodded as her question was answered, thinking that pretty much made sense. [break][break] "Well if they pay attention and listen to you, there should be no need to banish anyone. They should listen to you anyways, since you know, adult and a teacher ontop of that." She replied back, amusement coloring her tone. She rarely struggled with being around and listening to the teachers, but she also had a healthy view of the adults in the world save for her mother. She didn't feel like getting in trouble just to be rebellious was really worth it, nor did she want to deal with feeling guilty should she hurt their feelings on accident. She knew some kids would do things like that to look cool, but she's always found that kind of behaviour to be stupid.[break][break] For a moment she wondered if she should take the question back, or shouldn't have asked at all. She could recognize that it was a difficult one, especially since it seemed to require a more careful response. She wondered if perhaps it was a topic that made him concerned or upset, but she really wanted to understand. "Well, it's just.." She picked at the blanket she made as she felt a little tense, a little bit worried. "Sometimes I notice that some of the other kids don't really like adults. Laughter bubbled out of Penny. Familiar and warm, it escaped her lips and filled his ears. A smile stretched across Warren's lips hearing the signature laugh of his beloved daughter. There were millions of times he heard the light-haired girl he called a daughter burst into laughter and it never grew old. The happiness of his daughter mattered universes more than his own. Instances where he favoured himself were almost nonexistent. They were primarily contained in the days of parental burnout where his mother insisted he head out for the night while she watched Penny despite his daughter missing him.

There were pangs of guilt in those actions, but resetting his mindset allowed him to return to his daughter better than before. Furthermore, his mother was quick to improve Penny's mood after he left. A soft laugh escaped Warren at Penny's words regarding the attention of students. There was truth in every word, but it forgot about the undeniable notion of some teenagers believing wholeheartedly they knew better than any adult. Reinforcing the necessity to listen by regaling them with the falsified story of how he lost an entire arm to a workshop machine appeared to push them into line.

"They should, but sometimes they like to think they know more than your dad," Warren explained with a chuckle. His voice then shifted to a quieter tone. "Oh! And you haven't told anyone the real reason dear ol' dad doesn't have his left arm, right?"

The instant Penny began attending Panacea Academy, Warren had explained his little fib. Dishonesty needed avoidance, but Warren made a special exception for teaching the youngsters about workshop safety. Occasionally, students needed a constant, visual reminder why you never messed around in metalworking class. An unmistakeable, impossible-to-miss prosthetic tended to be quite effective. The explanation for Penny's questioning about the morals of individual parents shifted Warren's face to a gentle frown. A 'hmm' escaped his face as the gears turned, trying to think how to explain it best.

"Well, sometimes it is because they have bad parents and other times... it's because they think of it as freeing," Warren started, pausing to think. "You know, I was a handful to your grandma. Did a lot of things I was not supposed to and, if I recall right, told her in the most condescending voice how I knew more than her after she tried helping me with my homework. I thought I did... she was not amused by it. The next time I asked for help with math, she furrowed her brow in a way that's clear it was fake and said 'Warren, I thought you said you knew more than me' and let me figure it out.

Made me do it, I failed the assignment, but point is... some of those kids are at that point where they think they are free to do whatever they want and think they're adults too. So they don't like that all the adults who are trying to help them out are telling them what to do. Others are from bad run-ins and they consider it a defense. It's a complicated issue, sweetheart, but most will learn and grow out of it. Give 'em some time and let the teacher or parent handle it... but if you think something's wrong, let me know, okay?"

The tangent leaned more on a ramble Warren hoped would get his point across while also creating open communication. There were times when parents or teachers went overboard... or were outright abusive. While these individuals were unrelated to Penny, maintaining open communication to keep others safe was right... He considered it a duty given his position as a teacher to keep students safe from abuse in any form.

She was pretty proud of that fact, since she was probably the best secret keeper ever! She was actually pretty lucky almost nobody talked to her about it anyways, and if it did become a topic she was involved with she always played to her father's cautionary tale. She didn't exactly like talking or thinking about the truth anyways, since it was so hazy and difficult to remember. It was something in the dark and distant past, a life event she hoped neither of them would have a repeat of. [break][break] At her own statements though, she could tell again it required more thought on the words. It must either be a difficult topic for some reason, or one that had too many answers to condense easily. Maybe she was a little bit too naive to think it was something with layers of answers, but part of her really desired to understand. As he gave her an example of his own behaviour in the past, she was surprised a little but listened without judgement. "But you were able to fix it. Do you think...maybe some of them can too?" Again there was more of her naive innocence shining through, but she has always preferred to believe the best in people. Dishonesty was the rarest practice in Warren’s life. He instilled honesty in Penelope where possible, teaching its crucial importance. Practiced the truth himself daily to inspire good decision-making... but the accident was among the few exceptions. There was awareness in the faculty about the truth, the teachers who had been around long enough knew about the incident. A month’s leave was easily noticed alongside the absence of his arm from shoulder down... Part of the lie was defensive while additionally educationally satisfying curious minds. People could genuinely lose limbs from a lack of caution in the workshop.

The situation between Warren and his mother was resolved. Resolutions were not an expectation in reality, unfortunately. The naive question from his daughter hurt his heart... but children needed to learn the world was not simple. A thought knitted between Warren's brows as he considered his words carefully.

He nodded at Penelope's words. "Some will, but not all. Adults can do unforgivable too, sweetheart. It all depends, but some may have a good reason not to... Others won't, and hopefully, those are the ones who come back and forgive."

A delighted smile crossed the father's face at his daughter's thanks and words. Penny's happiness was infectious, especially when you wanted it. Another bite of his food was taken as tension eased, providing a moment to enjoy the food. Once he swallowed the bite, he heard his daughter's fruit offer.

We're gonna fly away [attr="class","prism-onebody"] Honestly, she had probably packed a picnic for an entire group. She had been so excited when she had the idea, that she couldn't help but go a little overboard. Enough so that she ahd packed so many utensils and food items, but it seems like she had entirely forgotten things to drink! Whoops, well...she supposed it made sense she'd forget something. "But we can try to protect them from the adults that are actually bad, right? If we notice or they tell us, anyways." If they hid it and didn't speak and nobody saw, well then there was no way to know if someone was doing something bad. [break][break] She made another folded sandwich, making sure to not pack it as full as before. She didn't want it to gush out like her last sandwich, that would be a bit embarassing for a repeat of. "Okay. If you're still hungry after that, of course." She bit into the sandwhich, chewing her food carefully and feeling happy as there was no overflow this time. Swallowing that mouthful, her eyes glanced at her basket as he spoke again. "Maybe...not that much. I forgot to bring us drinks."She took another bite, chewing before continuing to finish the rest of the sandwich. It was so tasty, but she was pretty full by now. [break][break] She had a lot of food left though, and needed to find a use for it. "I'm pretty full already. Do you want to take any of this back with you for dinner or lunches for other days? You could also share it with the other teachers." She didn't know if the teachers would like the food she made, or if they even needed any pre-made food at all. It might fill a meal or two if they didn't want to cook, but if the offer was waved aside she was sure she could find a hungry student somewhere. Difficult topics were something Warren adjusted to handling. It became a requirement unrealized until it appeared when the brunette became a parent. There were plenty of instances where he learned to handle those situations. Gradual thought and taking his time became the crucial solutions to assist Penny's comprehension. A child's impatience mattered less than providing a proper answer that could be understood. While his mother assisted with the child-rearing where Warren struggled and required more experience, it was a skill set the large man needed... Without it, he doubted Penny would have gotten this far.

"Yep. Try our best to at least," Warren answered with a smile. "They deserve to be happy too after all."

Gradually, Warren ate through his lunch, finishing the sandwich before moving on to the salad he brought with him. He nodded in agreement to indulging in some of the berries Penny brought. The lack of drinks prompted a soft chuckle from Warren. Quietly, the man offered the unopened water bottle to his daughter.

"You can have it, Penny. If you're thirsty go ahead," Warren offered.

There were other easy beverage options Warren could grab before returning to class. Furthermore, in true fatherly fashion, Warren would rather care for Penelope than himself. As his light-haired daughter mentioned being full already and offered the remaining snacks, the metalworking teacher responded with a small shrug.

"If you don't think you are going to finish it, I can. But if you want some of it for later, then keep it for yourself and your friends, Penny," Warren advised.

Snacks were something purchased and Warren wanted his daughter to enjoy whatever she had before considering others. The primary exception was if the food would expire before being eaten. Given Penny's position as a student, Warren wanted the girl to worry about herself and her friends before the adults who could, probably, afford their food.

We're gonna fly away [attr="class","prism-onebody"] She was quick to push the topic from her mind, knowing that dwelling on assumptions and the what-ifs of misbehaving students and bad adults wasn't really the best thing to spend her mental energy on. It may be something that makes her worried for all the involved and affected parties, but there really wasn't much that she could do about it anyways. Even though her mind was likely to stray now that she had finished her meal, it was fairly easy to come up with happier or more productive topics. She shook her head a little at his offer, not out of embarassment but more an indication she didn't really need it. [break][break] "I don't need a drink just yet. It was just something I noticed. But you're right, I'll share what's left with friends." She shrugged a bit as if to show it really wasn't an issue, at least not quite yet. It supposed on how long they went without a place she could grab a drink, or if they got up to another activity in the meanwhile. Right now she was in a full and rather content state of mind, with the nice weather and kept greenery all around them. If she were to be honest though, she thinks this would be a day suited for some nice tea more than other drinks. Gaze turning back to admire her present, running fingers carefully along the lovingly crafted carvings. [break][break] "This reminds me of that old cartoon I used to watch a lot. The unicorn and the princess one." It was vague for anyone who didn't have to sit through hours of the same old timey movie on repeat with her, but he'd probably be able to remember it pretty quick. Most kids had things or series they spammed on repeat forever and ever, and that old movie had been hers. She could remember every line spoken by every character with ease, and the dialogue that warned the importance but also dangers of trusting others.
